Cats absolutely can be taught self-control. I've done it; taught my ex's cat to never steal people-food. After 2 months, I could meal-prep 3 feet from her, and she'd barely twitch an ear, no matter what I was making. She knew if she tried to steal, she'd get in trouble. Looking extra adorable and gently begging, tho...that worked on me; she knew I was a sucker, and would likely crack and give her a tidbit.

I recently left my cat alone for about four days. (I asked my aunt to make sure she had things like food and water while I was gone) And my aunt told me that when she first came in to check on her, my cat thought she was me for a few seconds. Then, once she realized it wasn't me, she ran and hid. And it was like that for the first few days. And now that I'm home, she hates nit knowing where I am all the time. If she wakes up from her nap and realizes I'm not in her line of sight, she will search the apartment for me, meowing the entire time.
