A few things that annoys me with my Tecsun 2200x is this. The signal meter is about one second slow. The other thing is soft muting while tuning on FM and air band.

You fiddled too much with the controls after putting it in Sync for us to tell what it's actually doing. I've seen other reviews where the Sync function seems to be working good on some bands but not others, so it's probably a bit quirky, however this radio seems to preform well without Sync anyway.

Hello Dan as a mw dxer and ssb usser i find thelc 90 to be garbage radio.I own 130 receivers and its the worst rsdio and for the price forget it. Thanks for everything you do for radio.RON Z. WA3090SWL.

Right, well I have to agree when it comes to issues like SSB, which was implemented through firmware, and poor AGC which can be heard when just tuning through the HF bands. But LC90 really tried to break some new ground by including HF/LW/MW in a portable format, with global Internet.

I had returned the Choyong LC90 because it would not connect to my Internet WiFi, bit it would connect to my phone tethering and wifi at Hotels. Now I have the LC90M, mini, which does the same, but I live with that now. Choyong said previously to my email to them that it is the security protocol on my home, Comcast-Xfinity wifi Security with that system's security, such as WPA2, etc. 😅

Back in the day, I often thought about getting a 3030, but always stuck with my Lowe HF150 - an excellent receiver but with limited features. Interesting that you don't often see used 3030's for sale in more recent years.

There actually are a few 3030s for sale on Ebay, but many are from Japan sellers who tend to ask for very high prices.

I have a few Tecsuns. The H 501 X, the 880, and 330..a couple other small ones with ETM. Btw, ETM should just be Standard across the board with All Tecsuns! My 330 is still, ro this day my most Favorite Tecsun! It even Syncs better than any of the others! I was and am still kinda disappointed with the H 501 X! I like the 880 a little better than the 501.As far as Sony ICF's, I have the 2010 ,2002, and 7600gr. My 2002 is a better performer than the 7600gr but nothing beats the 2010! If I could score a great 2001 for a reasonable price I'd certainly buy it! I'm thinking lately though Icom 7300! I have an Icom 8500..the original lights just died and probably needs a little servicing..don't know who to go to. I love the 8500! Wish I had the 8600!!! Kinda spendy!

A little trick I use Dan on the PL330 is a little 3M black rubber sticker one thr tuning dial in order to speed up the dialing a little bit. I don't think the muting on the 330 is so bad. To this day the PL330 is, bar none, The best scanner for Shortwave I know! Good videos!

This is the strangest radio I've ever seen! The internet stations are quite odd, a lot of the descriptions are in Greek or Russian with a few even in Chinese instead of English so they are not readable but probably about half of them cause a Network Error and won't play. The AM MW band is even stranger and won't pick up anything at all, not even static with a signal strength of zero! The description on Amazon says it has a built in AM antenna with the whip antenna to help out but that doesn't seem to be the case and the whip antenna won't pick up anything on shortwave either, just on FM. Sensitivity on FM is quite good however. I haven't tried SSB yet due to not being able to get anything on SW except WWV on 15 Mhz. Sometimes when the radio is first turned on it won't receive anything untill I punch the buttons several times to wake it up, like it forgot to run the radio app. The radio seems like they were just given a description of one over the phone or saw a picture of one once then tried to build one like they thought it should work without ever seeing one in person!

İnstead of the Raddy RF919 you can better go for the Sangean ATS909X2 which is a far better radio. Also the Sangean has no muting when searching the frequencies. İ don't recommend the R919. You can better save your money for a Tecsun S2200X or PL880 or PL990X!
@pregabalin-fix

💯 Even the PL-680 would be a better choice for someone who likes to manually scan SW. The Raddy RF919 (HRD-C919) is based on the Si4735 chip (for AM 150 kHz-30 MHz), similar to the ATS-20 (which is occasionally sold for around 13 bucks). On the ATS-20, you can upgrade the firmware to eliminate the soft-mute effect. Just saying...

I’m very new to SW listening, oh I hope this is not a dumb question. But after watching numerous reviews on portable radios and also watching quite a few on the 2200x, I’m puzzled. Other than there being a lot more controls to play with, is this radio better than the small radios? No one who’s been sent the 2200x seems to be saying “wow, I can get all these signals that my Tecsun PL-880 or Qodosen DL-286 never pulls in.”

You have to change the setting in the system settings to turn off the soft mute. Hold down the setting button in power off mode, Scroll the big dial until you get to: Mute Enable, press the inner tuner knob, and you can change to Disable - This makes it less harsh and turns off the soft muting. It has made it the same as my XHDATA D808 by doing this.
@dxace1
@dxace1 Ай бұрын
I disagree -- this feature does not sufficiently improve the soft muting problem....and the D-808 is still actually superior

If they fixed the soft muting, problem, and it is a problem, a deal breaker for me, I would bite one one, and probably would have bought one as soon as they were introduced. I've had a couple of past receivers with soft muting, and one that instead of muting had an annoying "Zip-zip-zip" sound when tuned at anything faster than one step per second. I can't remember what make or model it was, I didn't have it long. Anything that tunes with a knob or buttons and soft mutes is a radio to pass on. It kind of amazes me that radios do it at all at this point in time.
@charlesfeinstein7035
@charlesfeinstein7035 Ай бұрын
Thanks for keeping us up to speed on developments with this radio. It's too bad that the soft muting issue remains to be fully addressed. The value proposition is there as the RF919 is now down to $170 (plus tax) delivered on AliExpress and I suspect will soon drop further. Especially in comparison with the Tecsun 2200x at $327, which doesn't seem to be a great leap corward I was surprised to learn that your replacement RF919 came with firmware version 707. I upgraded my unit to version 706 with no problems about a week ago. Ver 706 provided a modest improvement on the muting issue but apparently Ver 707 does not contain further improvements. A KZbin poster has indicated that his Retekess TR113 has Ver 707 installed and that it "solved" the muting problem. However when I queried Radioddity on this just a couple of days ago they said that 706 was the latest version available and cautioned that any upgrade for the Retekess equivalent model may not be compatible with the RF919. Raddy also said that they are still working on fixing the muting. BTW, my unit's SSB calibration is dead-on, so it's a QC issue and YMMV. I really enjoy other aspects of the RF919. As you've noted, audio quality is as good as most anything out there, and sensitivity and selectivity are up to snuff. It doesn't have synchronous detection but that is well implemented on my Tecsun PL-680 and I don't much miss it.

Overpriced Chinesium. I've been DX'ing since the late 60s and have had dozens of radios from dirt cheap to several kilobucks. While I like and regularly use my Tecsun PL-880 and 990, I agree with those who are disappointed with many Chinese offerings. The form factor is also butt ugly, looks like someone slapped together parts of different radios. For me, nice try but no cigar. Thanks Dan

Well, the capabilities of the 919 are indeed amazing. Wide band coverage, recording to microSD, phone app control, huge speaker, multi-bandwidths, and antenna tuning, a feature we have not seen in many years in a portable. But the soft muting is a killer for many people.
