Good job! I had to replace the seal of the valve cover from the front cilinder pair. According to the manual you can do that with the radiator swung to the front. It has to be me but... after many trial and error sessions I ended up with removing the radiator (had to refresh coolant anyway), the tank and the airfilter box. With all that removed you can access the front valve cover relatively well. Trouble I had when I did not do all this removal is that the seal continued to fall of the valve cover. The seal has to be fixed to the valve cover and not to the cilinder block. So gravity fights against you. I also used the sealant Honda recommends as the 'glue' to fix the seal to the valve cover. After that fitting it was relatively trouble free and the oil leak (the reason for replacing it) is gone! Good luck with all the jobs on your VFR, very interesting.

Throw the slide hammer in the bin, take the tool and tighten it and twist the piston out in with the caliper in ur Hand, it is a 10 second job per piston with that tool. No probs m8, you can use ur vice, but put the caliper in on its side so piston facing up, then just twist it out, once youve done it once you will totally get it where you won't need the vice and do it with ur hands, piston tools are great and make stripping calipers a breeze. Also regarding ur bleed nipple always give them a tap with a hammer if you think they seized in, it shocks the thread and gives you a fighting chance of getting it out, it also goes for any bolts on the bike, especially steel into ally👍

Ethanol was a bad idea, and the solution is to remove it from the petrol before you put it into your tank. You will need a soluble water based blue dye, add this to your petrol in a see through plastic container, and then add water to the mix in a 50/50 ratio. The water will dissolve the ethanol, and as a mixture of water and ethanol is heavier than petrol it will sink to the bottom of the see through plastic container, as will be easy to see as it will be blue. Now you can syphon off the top layer of petrol, and store that in a can seperately. The blue dyed ethanol and water can be flushed down the toilet. If they stop supplying all petrol for transport at some future time, you can use the air intake of your small portable compressor to put natural gas from the household gas supply into a container and run your engine on that perfectly well. If natural gas gets stopped, you can run your engine on wood gas again perfectly well. I have a petrol generator at home for standby power cuts, that i have converted to run on liquefied petroleum gas, or natural gas, or wood gas and that means that I shall always be a step ahead of the bastards that wish to stop us from using internal combustion engines in our bikes and cars.

This is an old issue that for me at the moment is resolved. I have an Aprilia RST Mille as well as classic cars and a modern Skoda, plus a plethora of horticultural machines that are vulnerable to Ethanol. At the moment I fuel all of them with Super unleaded. I proved to myself many moons ago that I saw a mileage advantage in using Super that outweighed the price premium, so it made economic sense. I live in E Mids and from what I have discovered, at least 3 of the big four fuel companies supply Super without ethanol locally and other sources of Super have been shown to have very low percentages, ~3% of Ethanol. The move to Super also makes further financial sense because even the Govt acknowledge that you will get less fuel mileage from fuel containing higher levels of Ethanol, such that those that fill up now with E10 are using more fuel that they were with E5. If it comes to the crunch then Ethanol can be readily taken out of the fuel that is sold although it becomes a bit of an expensive faff.
@ALifetimeMeasuredinMiles3 ай бұрын
Hi Clive, that all makes sense. I guess what I am curious about is what is going to happen in 2026, which is the proposed date for the withdrawal of super unleaded from the garage forecourt’s. I can’t see how they will do this without an alternative. It’s the great unanswered at the moment that seems to be hanging in the air. Thanks for the comments and for watching, appreciated 👍
@clivewilliams36613 ай бұрын
@@ALifetimeMeasuredinMiles Thanks for the reply. I share your concern but apart from the Ethanol the other concern is the damage that will occur with the performance motors that I have in the classic cars, notwithstanding that the Aprilia is a HC engine that ought to run on high octane fuel. I suppose that at worst the supply industry will provide octane boosters and coupled with the removal of the Ethanol all makes it particularly expensive. I could understand the unilateral removal of leaded fuel that meant the use of additives or replacement valve seats but the removal of Super doesn't make the same sense and will have a significant effect on a good number of motorists.

Always loved my K1100LT while I had it, they are the perfect mile muncher. 500 mile days never a problem, just sit there in comfort and dial in whatever speed you want to travel at. The engine is a torque monster, you can happily leave it in 5th and roll on and off the throttle, from 30mph to 130mph all in one gear.. they are also surprisingly good when you get to the twisty bits and you can easily surprise some sports bikes on the road….. once the revs get over 5000rpm she really takes off! I now have a 1990 K1 (which has the same 4 valve head and delivers the same levels of torque) to compliment my 1983 R100RS, but I still get the urge to get another LT or a R1100RT as a tourer in the garage! 😊 ….. PS you do get used to the indicators and the self cancelling element is excellent 👍

One of the best touring bike ever made by BMW. Far ahead of its time. Bmw put there best money and engineering on this series. riding it myself for many years and no modern bike tempt yet to change it with other bike. Nice films, enjoy enjoy enjoy... ALL THE BEST.

My relationship with my RT will never get better than a love/hate one. Fantastic dirty weather bike, very comfortable and so on. But... I just got myself a CBR600 F4i Sport of the exact same vintage (2001). No rusted bolts on the CBR, many of those on the Beemer. And that is just one example. There are many small things on the Beemer that are of bad quality and crumble. Never had that on any of my Japanese bikes... Love/hate relationships never last long...

The CBR of that era are amazing bikes and beautifully crafted, but I have seen many dogs too, any bike neglected will fall to that fate of rusty bits and bobs. I think the built quality on the K Series was something that was not repeated on later R T models from what I hear. Thanks for watching and enjoy your bikes. The CBR is one of the greatest bikes ever produced. Stay safe.
