Fantastic that you have so much history with your landrover. I had a mayflower capstan winch on my series three station wagon ( a forerunner to the fairey winch) very capable winch which I used many times for recovery work and tree stump removal. Perhaps sounds odd, but I always liked the recessed fuel filler and door handles. I used to use Haynes manuals, but also picked up official landrover workshop manuals that sometimes come up on ebay. You may already know this, but if you have freewheeling hubs fitted, lock them up about once a week and go for a short drive help keep the hubs lubricated 😊

I like traditional bulbs . They've given me clues to low voltage from alternators and low oil pressure at idle . Had a 1970 series III in the mid eighties and the diesel engine was far from new . Burnt oil like a destroyer , but would read fine until tickover , even when it needed a litre or more added . Don't miss it . Thankfully enough money for new stuff these days . LoL .Stay well ! :-)

As an ocean sailer, I had to cope with lots of stainless on aluminium, particularly on the masts where all fittings are stainless. Comment is correct that they are a long way apart on galvanic scale hence prone to galvanic action via electrolysis. There is an expensive tube of tough weather resistant goop that I bought that electrically isolated a fitting from the mast.

Nice! The LR is looking lovely. Thanks for making and sharing the video. There are ways to test the functioning of the alternator at lower speeds, but once the engine is started I'd expect your electrical demands are minimal until you put aux loads on like lights, wipers etc. I think until the alternator is creating juice just keep the demand low and typically don't idle to raise temp. I think, once the oil is circulating, then gently get temps rising and load is the best way to do this, but gently. Once you're at road speed and revs I'd expect the alternator to be happy. If you put a bit of demand on the battery until then no dramas. Hey, you've been driving this for ages so don't mean to teach you what you clearly already know. Didn't realise the LR took endless draw on the pre-heat. My old (early 90s, so not that old) diesel fun bus has a timer / temp cut out on the heater plugs. One cycle (~10s) is almost always enough so I thought 30s is quite a long time, but I don't know S3 in temp conditions. Unsure if your crank was a bit short of if you might have a dodgy glow plug, or was just unlucky. Again relatively easy to test these. Great vid!

Thanks for the comment! I think I just didn’t give it long enough on the starter, but good to keep YT real haha. Yeah, I’ll stick with this alternator for the moment and just work with it. Would be nice to have 12V from cold idle though!

Nice summary! There are better door hinges on a Series 3 vs. certainly a Series 2 or 2A. I've never driven a Series 1 to know how well those doors work (perhaps they're much lighter, so can get away with the gate-style hinges?) You also get insect screens on the vent-flaps as standard as far as I know, where they were optional on a Series 2, and different vent--controls. The heating system was way better on a Series 3 vs. Series 2 - an engine-side heat-transfer unit rather than the Smiths (or replacement Clayton Classics) "ankle-burner" unit which takes up space in the passenger compartment. The Series 3 also had narrower sills than a Series 2/2A, which seemed like a worthy change. Having replaced the bulkhead on my my weird 1961 / 200TDI Franken-Land-Rover a few years ago, switching it from a Series 3 bulkhead back to a (correct for the year of the chassis) Series 2A bulkhead, there was a lot more work involved to get it closer to "period correct" than I expected, but we live and learn. With the engine-swap it'll never be a museum piece, but that;s ok with me.

Looking good. I'm still using old T58 flourescent tubes (4 doubles and one over my bench). LEDs are ~20% better as they give ~100 Lumens per W whereas flourescent tubes are ~80 per W. I will make the swap, but I have other projects to prioritise. Like you I also used Sandtex masonry paint inside and when it was clean it was very bright. It is a bit overkill for a garage but a great product. My lights are split diagonal and I don't have the starters in every tube as they are not all necessary all the time. I also find floor paint (I used Ronseal red) to lift. Even with their own sealer and careful prep. I hope your carpet is not rubber backed as this will trap more moisture than plain. I like the twin track shelving and have this in many areas. It's cheap, strong and flexible. Have you considered a pit? Great tour of the workshop and good luck!

Looking at the belt covers I'd say your secondary belt is too long. It's good to have it as long as possible because it reduces the leverage that wants to twist the lay shaft bracket but yours is allowing the shaft to hit the primary belt cover and lifting the secondary cover. Click together belts are available at myford so you don't need to remove the spindle to replace belts. Primary belt cover is not adjustable although I have reduced the size of the spacer and put a joggel in the back mounting stud to bring it into better alignment on mine.

Hi, I've had series 2, 2a 3 and 90 turbo diesels. I loved my series 3 109 station wagon, but for me the 2a wins every time. The later 2a, post 1968 I think had the headlights in the wings, wire grill, all steel dash, speedo in the centre of the dash, stronger chassis, and stronger gearbox, just have to learn to double declutch. However if someone was giving a series 3 away I wouldn't say no. Personally, for all their idiosyncrasies, I think the series landrover has much more character than later models, and we're designed with a purpose in mind, to do a job, and could be fixed in the field. And let's remember the landrovers origins, the Willis jeep. 🙂

I prefer the synchro gearbox and the brakes are actually quite good for a series Land Rover with the 11inch front drums and servo assistance, also later ones have fog lights and or reverse lights, seat belts and a padded dash top and knee roll, dual circuit brakes and brake pressure loss warning light. All in all an improvement on earlier models and cheaper to purchase as they are still relatively common.Cheers.

Yes the older tyre sizes really suited the cars back then. I'm also the owner of an MGB GT, it's a 1967 model (personally with the purest styling) in 'Sandy Beige' a GT only colour. It's on chrome wires, has a Webasto, mild cam, close ratio gerabox and many individual interior upgrades made by the first owner in the 60s which look factory - many of which MG later did. The interesting thing is I owned this very car in the 1980s selling it in 1988. By chance I found it 4 sale online a few weeks back and bought it back from the other side side of OZ. It's still in remarkable condition, I feel quite lucky I have it again.

Yes I feel quite lucky having the old girl back again, I should do some kind of review on the car. To give you an idea of the mods made by the first owner, he raised the front seat heights by an inch, which I can recommend re driving position (I've heard of this mod before). He fitted built in head rests (early Bs didn't have these), removed the Smiths heater and replaced it with a plumbed in blower/heater/air system with two little swivel eye ball vents at each end of the dash (the one on the left replaces the map light which is repositioned in the centre of the dash low down below the switches. The eyeball vent on the right replaced the Overdrive switch which was moved to the steering column using a second indicator stalk to activate it (this is now gone and the overdrive switch is atop the gear stick as per late MGBs). The map bin in the passenger footwell was moved to the passenger door below the grab handle with a fitted 'armrest' in top which you could lift out (this armrest is now gone). There was an identical map bin on the drivers door with padded lid (but this bin is now gone). There is a large and comfortable centre padded console in leather with a lift out lid with plenty of storage space underneath. There is also a storage shelf under the dash beneath the glove box and lastly there was an electric door mirror on the drivers door (now gone and replaced with a conventional mirror). Lastly he fitted a reverse light and 2 small under bonnet lights. All these mods were in the car when I had it in the 1980s. On buying it back its engine has been rebuilt in recent past, a brake booster has been fitted (early MGBs didn't have these) and a close ratio gearbox and a mild cam fitted. It appears to have had 4 owners since I sold it in 1988 (one owning it for 25 years, it was he who did the engine rebuild and gearbox).

Over the years it has become less practical and not much fun as a daily driver in modern traffic here in Canada however it is wonderful in our rural areas of which we have a lot and I still thoroughly enjoy driving it. Some mods like parabolic springs, electronic ignition and a Weber carb have made it quite comfortable and reliable. Also, it's simple to work on, parts are affordable and very easy to find. About 25 years ago I had to swap the chassis and installed a galvanized one which I highly recommend. This year she will get galvanized framed doors and door tops which have just arrived from the UK. I think it really depends on your lifestyle- they are the kind of vehicle that suits those who appreciate the slower pace of life. If you're joining the commuter traffic to the office every day, you're probably going to hate it quite quickly. I live in an increasingly busy area of Southern England and that was a large part of why my Series 3 is only used occasionally for commuting to work now. At one time I was doing over 10k miles a year, and it was arduous as you say- but I will say she really looked after me with the regular use. But it's an incredibly useful vehicle, generally quite simple to keep going and the parts availability is exceptional. The flip side is that quality components are increasingly expensive and they are absolutely not the relatively cheap transport they once were. I think it's also worth mentioning that they can be a miserable experience in winter and really make you appreciate the creature comforts of more modern vehicles.

Hi. A S3 LR like yours is definitely a great practical classic as long as you don't have to go too far (or too short) a journey. Either of those cause problems and yes it's completely down to keeping on top of work, regardless of the vehicle. A classic must ideally be under cover and pampered a bit more than a daily car, too. If it's a chore to drive then the fun fades. I'm sure your S3 bring a smile to everyone. A practical classic is what everyone would drive, but they don't.

I'm looking at 109s at the moment. We have an EV that does almost everything that we need, so our Zafira is doing very few miles (less than 200 last year). The perfect time to buy and old Land Rover purely for the fun of it and let it replace the Zafira. What do we NEED it for, just towing a trailer to the tip, local journeys with our family of 5 and 1 or 2 friends, carrying DIY items back from the store, tip runs and, the possibility of very rare, long journeys where charging would be a problem (once a year UK or Ireland holidays or an emergency drive to a funeral in Ireland).

Sounds like it’s time for a Landy in your life! A 109” would suit the needs you’ve mentioned very well indeed. Do it!

I nearly bought one the other day, but it's not quite the right time, as I'm waiting to see if my contract continues at work. I should know in the next few weeks.

Thank you, and thanks for watching! I don’t actually have a share-able email for here, must get one sorted. Happy for questions in comments though, the traffic helps the channel!

Enjoy your content been watching for awhile. Just acquired a series 3 similar era to yours. All engine gearbox running gear seem fairly standard. Needs a full rebuild. Good part On a galvanized chassis. Any advice would be appreciated Sam

Hi Sam! Thanks for watching! Sounds like you’ve got a great project. Just take your time at disassembly and record everything and store carefully. Throw nothing away!!! I made that mistake and it can be expensive when you find out certain parts prices. Keep in touch!
