I looove windsurfing and kitesurfing as well. Both very much in contact with the water. I love the sensation of the water in both. Wingfoiling still haven't caught me completely (about 10 times out and foiling well). I really miss the sensation of contact with the water. It frustrates me somehow, and even when fully powered feels SO boring compared to wind/kite-surfing. Wingfoiling feels disconnected from the water somehow. Almost like gliding through thin air. I mean it is fascinating to try. BUT the sensation seemed to change radically when I suddenly surfed a soft wave with my foil. Finally I got a biiig fat smile on my face, what I have been missing so far. Wingfoiling for me seems all about the waves. Windsurfing and kitesurfing needs no waves to be fun, and both always makes smile (when the wind is enough of course) There's just something magic about windsurfing especially.. that sensation of leaning back and accellerating like a rocket just over the water, always brings a big crazy smile on the face... That's my real passion. Even after mostly kiting for 14 years. No matter what we are privileged to be able to go do what we love out in the big blue. 🙂🤙

@windaddict10 сағат бұрын
Hi Henry. Depends on the use you want to give it. My preferences were to use it for light wind winging (5-12 knots). So the 7'0 was the right size for me with 90kg. If you are unsure, best to ask the Gong advisors

Do-it-yourself systems by 500€. Could you please send me info about a kit with that price? Cheers
@windaddict10 сағат бұрын
For do-it-yourself systems you have to factor in the work / effort of designing and building it. I personally don't want to do that and I don't want to have a bulky battery on top of the board.

Hi Claudio, thank you for your interesting videos. I am 75 years old and I started wing foiling at 73. The learning progression is of course much more longer but it allows you to stay fit and is a lot of fun. In France, many wingfoilers consider that wingfoiling is the "medicine walker" of water sports and I confirm it. What is possible in wingfoiling is more difficult and more dangerous for example in kitefoiling even if I know 80 years old kitefoilers ! Carry on and take care.

Regarding your remark about ventilation due to mast thickness. Your HM86 mast has a thickness of 17mm. That is the same thickness as the normal carbon V2 Gong mast. Me and my 3 homies all have Gong alu masts V2 which were also made 17mm thick to be more stiff than the shaky V1's. We have never experienced ventilation of the mast. Is it possible that your frontwing initiated the ventilation, which crept up the mast so that you get the idea from topview that only the mast ventilated? The mast angle of attack is small so it will not stall or ventilate quickly, except in a quick turn.
@windaddict23 күн бұрын
My HM86 mast has a thickness of 17mm at the bottom but 20mm towards the top. The normal carbon mast in the "racing size" of 100cm is 17mm top and bottom. So it may be slightly faster but mostly the same. The best racing mast is the new HM107 and that one is 13mm throughout. That's a big difference. I talked to a Gong advisor and he said "yes excatly the HM86 is too thick...too big stab + too thick mast = ventilation = crashes !". Of course I don't know if maybe the front wing played a role too. But I feel you would see that on the footage. And it's an Ypra-S which is made for high speeds. Yeah it's too big to go really fast, but with my modest top speed of 32 km/h I just doubt it would ventilate. So I can only really blame the mast and stab. And I had many weird crashed because of this. I guess the only way to find out is to try reach higher speeds with more adapted gear for racing and see if the problem disappears.
@watercrazylion23 күн бұрын
@@windaddict With your speed which is about the same speed as ours, ventilation is hardly possible. My buddy also has a relatively fast Gong Fluid M-H frontwing of 1000cm2 and he never ventilated anything. His topspeed is 35kmu. Did you ever ventilate with your mast and your Fluid H? What I meant was that I think that you were too high in the water without noticing, so that your front wing ventilated or breached.
@windaddict23 күн бұрын
No, I don't recall ventilating with my mast and the Fluid H. But I never really pushed speed or kept high speed for a long time. At Defi Wing it happened more often at certain parts of the course. Maybe currents were strange there. First I thought it was seaweed but other riders didn't seem to have problems with that. It was definitely not me being up too high or breaching. I know when I am too high. You can see on the video the weird splash that is produced before the fall. If that's not ventilation, then I have no clue what it is. Sometimes I felt the board was rotating towards the windward side and I had to put counter pressure with my back foot to avoid crashing. Again my assumption was that this was due to ventilation.
@watercrazylion23 күн бұрын
@@windaddictI agree it LOOKS like mast ventilation seen from above. And it would explain the turning motion. But it doesn't explain the sudden loose of lift. Or the air would have been sucked down to the frontwing. I am familiar with weed, when it slings around the mast or the wing, the flow is disturbed suddenly. This can be an explanation, because you had it more in certain parts of the course. But it does not explain why other did not seem to be hindered by it. (but you do not have a rearview mirror :-) Btw I hardly notice when I am too high above the water, only after I crash I realised I was too high...... Interesting topic!
@watercrazylion25 күн бұрын
Gratuliere! I admire your participation and overall you left behind quite some other wingfoilers. Regarding your remark about the stabilizer. Ofcourse a smaller stab can give more speed. But I think it is more important what you feel in your legs. Especially on longer streches you want to have the same load in both legs. For example: If the position of the mast is already maxed out to the front and you still feel too much back foot pressure, than the stab gives too little downforce and should be bigger or thicker or shimmed at a bigger angle.
@windaddict23 күн бұрын
Thank you! Much appreciated! I had the mast all the way in the back actually because I felt this was the only way to get more control.
@watercrazylion23 күн бұрын
@@windaddict I think you did right. The stab you used is indeed relatively big compared to your frontwing.

I read that the winner had the Ozone Fusion double wing. I also saw that in the top 15 there are 3 Gong team riders who use the Aramid UPE wings. I don't know if they took the Pulse Double Ply or not. I would have :-)
@windaddict23 күн бұрын
Yes, Mathis Ghio (the winner) used the Ozone Fusion wing. He just signed with Ozone. The best Gong rider was Julien Rattotti I think and on his Instagram you can see that he used the Pulse DP (the double profile). These wings make a lot of sense for high-speed long-distance racing. However in the normal short GWA races the Gong riders seem to use Droid Aramid wings. I asked a Gong advisor about this and he said "on small distances the DROID UPE is more efficient and also better in gusty conditions"

The only thing stopping us both is time and the commitment to another sport. I feel that foiling is a generation behind kiting in terms of design progression, but it is catching up fast. Might wait for the next gen Foildrive.

I'm 56 with 40 years of surfing experience. I have been foil surfing for 2 years and learning to wing foil now. I find foiling to be challenging and it brought back the stoke of learning new things. As for why the foiling demographics favor the older enthusiasts, I think it's because the entry to foiling is quite a big investment in gear. More than most teenagers or twenty year olds budgets allow.
@windaddictАй бұрын
Ok, but the Gong beginner set costs 1000 euros new. There are plenty of young people who have more expensive ski or mointainbike gear.
@jeromesurffoil7033Ай бұрын
@@windaddict True (I ride Gong gear), but I am in the US (Texas) and many young people here are not walking around with $1000 of play money. Probably 95% of the foilers I have met here are over 40 years old. I have not met any teenage foilers. I would like to see more young people learning and also female foilers. I have only seen 2 female wing foilers and they were just beginners.

Longtime windsurfer, tried kite and didn't like it. The idea of being away from my power source never much convinced me. The easy of carrying gear was not enough to compensate the feeling, so I went straight back to windsurfing and never looked back. Then wingfoiling came up and I started seeing some nice points. Like windsurfing, it keeps my gear compactly within range, like kiting it allows for fun with much less wind and it's easy to carry. Like neither of the two, it allows you to stop sailing, depower and find the occasional long wave to just surf. I'm into wingfoiling, but I'll always have my windsurfing kit ready.

Most of the group here on the Costa Daurada are 40yrs + coming from Kite foiling and windsurfing, I think it is easy access, quick rig up time, less material to carry. Most have gone trough the route of smaller, less litres and now going back up longer and skinner boards for Dw's. 👍👍

2 main reasons why wingers are old: 1) gear price and 2) most of them are ex-windsurfers, others are ex-kiters, so still not accessible for youngsters. the average ages in your channel is way higher than other channels.... and this is because of the contend, not for teens ;)

I am 54 and enjoy foiling and windsurfing I had a few years of and found windsurf boards boards double the price Armstrong foils £900 pounds each . It used to be fun upgrading kit new toys now it’s ££££ . The price of boards should have stayed the same or slight increase as computer cnc shapers are use and carbon fibre is not new tech now found everywhere these days . And young people starting out at least there is second hand kit on the market now and company’s like Gong pushing the prices down . Wing foiling is great fun but there are different sports out there how will change the market pulling people away . That will make the £££££££ go up anyone for a £3000. Pound board f…k o.. will go mountain biking .
