Great content as always! I have noticed on many of your videos you don't show the point or shot in real time but go straight to the slow mo. For this video we never got to see the point in real time. It would be really helpful to see the point in real time first and then see the breakdown. Thanks for all your content!

Is there a video that details the way we would drop it low or serve it without a high bounce? Is there a way to describe it or you need to just practice over and over and learn your energy and trajectory of swing and follow thru? It's hard for my brain to understand: hit it over, but don't bounce it high... It's a ball... it's gonna bounce... how can i figure that part out about the low bounce?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 6 күн бұрын
You're exactly right, it's mainly a feel you have to develop for yourself out on the court: 1) how much energy to put into the pall 2) the path of your swing (level, high to low, or low to high), 3) spin you put on the ball, 4) the trajectory with which you send the ball to the target. Play around with these variables and balance them out from their to get the shot you desire.

Also worth noting- his paddle tip starts out pointing upwards at about the 2:00 position and he preps his backswing early. Does his slice spin cause the ball to spin more sideways or backwards?

That style of play is what we refer to as "banging". That will work up to a certain point but if you hope to be a 4.0+ player then that doesn't work at that level. When your opponents come in and your shot speed doesn't phase them and they are winning the positioning battle because they're up at the NVZ line and you're not...you're toast.

How many sets are typically played? And does the one server rule apply to each set or just the first set? What decides who starts serving in sets 2 and potentially 3?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 11 күн бұрын
In pickleball, the term sets doesn't exist. There are games. Games are usually played first to 11 points and 2 out of 3 games wins the match.

I developed this shot within the first year of playing PB. I win so many points with this grip, hitting the ball with as much power as my forehand. My problem is I sit on the eastern backhand grip and my continental backhand is weak. Even for long backhand shots, I'm in an eastern backhand grip but I use 2 hands. Again, my weakness is the continental backhand that I see many hit with power.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 18 күн бұрын
Awesome about making this shot a weapon. A lot of people struggle with it. Yeah, sometimes the continental grip comes in handy. Gotta get those reps in and maybe have a pro look at where you may be going wrong from a technical standpoint.

Just because they can reach doesn't mean they can do a lot of damage with it necessarily. Depends how high of a contact they get. There's still tons of dropping at high levels even though both opposing players are up at the NVZ line.

I do variations of this warm up before playing, and often get amused looks and remarks from other players. I will continue to warm up on court, but would it also work to do an extensive warm-up at home, drive 15 minutes to the courts, and then just do a minor warm-up there?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 21 күн бұрын
Hi! Good for you! I'm so happy to hear you do a solid warm up despite any looks you may receive. I DEEPLY wish everyone warmed up like you, it would prevent so many injuries. It's ideal to no sit for an extended time between your full warm up and play but yes, 15 minutes is not that long and if you do an effective re-warm up then that can work.

To prevent someone from lobbing can you just target the person, that keeps lobbing, off hand with dinks. Wouldn't that prevent him from lobbing?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 26 күн бұрын
They can lob anytime they have a play on the ball so I’m not seeing how that would prevent them lobbing but if you make it so they have awkward contact points then their lob will have a higher chance of being a weak lob.

one difference i see in the 2 examples at min 7 (ish) in the low vs high TS volley is the difference in footwork. in the high TS volley, you move your feet to a better position to use your entire kinetic chain (from the ground up...from feet to hips to torso to arm). would love a video on this speciifc point: how to get insane power in a TS FH volley (high)...like the pros do. when i see 5.0+ vs 3.5-4.5s hit higher (yellow zone) balls at the NVL the 5.0+ players hit with so much more speed/power and spin. it looks like this insane power, even from smaller players, comes from a tight fast uncoiling of the kinetic chain even when at the NVL.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 26 күн бұрын
Yes, you’re right. Great use of the kinetic chain is key for max power. Thanks for the suggestion.

A lot of the drops are topspin. Do you feel that's a requirement for 4+ play? This is one of your first videos where you talk about making the shot when your position is awkward. I find at higher levels of play other than the serve and return, most shots end up being awkward because that's the goal of your (high level) opponents. When I was a good tennis player I won not because my stroke or footwork were so exceptional, but rather that I could make the shots on the run, falling back, being jammed, etc. I'm finding it hard to realistically drill these shots though so I've been playing more and drilling less. Lastly, I notice that some of the players are backing up from the kitchen line when it's obvious an attack is coming. I have mixed feelings about that. Yes, it gives you more time if you back up, but it also gives your opponent more angle to put it at your feet or to hit it wide around you. Thoughts?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 26 күн бұрын
Hey Brett! I think if you want to be effective at high level play in today’s game then yes, you need topspin. Also, making tough shots while on the move is necessary. I expect to be talking about this more and how to improve at it. I think backing off makes sense. At the speeds players can hit at these days the extra time helps. If you can stay up there and still block well, more power to you. There’s certainly a balance. You can’t give up too much space.

Great video--with the "be loose" tip I'm not sure what that translates to--what would the proper grip strength and wrist stiffness be for a reset vs a counterattack?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball Ай бұрын
Loose in your body in general when you are trying to absorb some pace of the shot for a reset. You'll have a little bit of a loser grip on your paddle than when countering for the same reason but being that there is power on the incoming shot you need some firmness to meet that power. On counterattacks, you'll have your grip more firm since you're wanting send the power back on them and it's the angle of your paddle facd that becomes more important.

Great stuff but for step one (turning the shoulder), you need to make your grip change and set it while turning your shoulders. I see so many pickleball players fumble around with their grip change too late or not changing it at all. This is especially true if you just hit a forehand or your waiting grip for a return is other than your backhand grip.

Thanks for making these videos Jordan! I have been following you for the 2.5 years I have been playing and you are definitely the best content provider! question for you, the kitchen line drill you said is a set up shot; how should we expect the ball to come back so as part of the drill we are setting ourselves up properly?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball Ай бұрын
In this case, the opponents should be hitting a drop since they will be forced into a low contact point BUT you should always expect a drive first just in case since a drive could be damaging if you're caught of guard, As far as lateral movement. If you hit crosscourt then squeeze the middle a bit and if you hit down the line then stay roughly in the middle of the side you're on.
