DBA & DBMM (De Bellis Antiquitatis v3.0 & De Bellis Magistrorum Militum v2.1). Basic and advanced versions of historical battle wargames, focusing on unit movement and unit types. Free PDF rules or £15 rulebooks. They're meant to be played with 6 or 10mm figures, but as the units represent 300-1000 men each, I prefer to use painted MDF bases with the unit banner drawn on instead to maintain the beyond epic scale (and it makes the cost pennies). Print off some terrain from your favourite non-copywrite Earth satellite website and you're good to go.

Bad Khorne (and some other armies) rules + Endless spells and no sign of any battlescroll made me go back to 40K. Bad rules don’t necessarily mean unplayable. but the unbalance is real in the current state of the game.

If Blood and Plunder piques your interest, look into Oak and Iron, also from Firelock Games. It's a naval combat game base in the Age of Piracy. The Core Box is $69 USD, and contains everything for 2 people to play, including 6 ship models. It also includes a playmat, which is a nice touch. Expansion boxes are $29-$49. My gaming group found it quick to learn and very fun.

I only played 1 mach in the new edition, I played a lot in the 2º and in the 3º and I ended burned by the shit rules in general, I dont like the competitive side of the wargames and when I saw that now the general book tell you EVEN what elements of scenografy and where you must put them... they lost me complety. Yes, nobody makes me play like that, but when GWS "has aligned the community to play "competitive only" everyone play only it because "I have a tournament, or a league or I want train for them"... its imposible play anything narrative.It's a shame that the same thing happened in 40K and that it's happening in Old World too.

Another Skirmish game to consider is The drowned earth it has a 2 player stater bundle for £135 terrain would probably be around £50-100 depending on what you can find. Warcrow may also be worth considering but it has only just been released. Stater set for that is £140 with rule book

If you’re looking for another skirmish game to try out or add to future lists may I suggest Eldfall Chronicles. It has 2 different start sets that each contain 2 of the 4 current factions for around €80 with every thing you need to play except terrain, which they sell for €25. The game gives me a fantasy infinity style with a it’s rules, but with fewer reactions and model count. It also has rules for Co-op and solo play.

As far as i know battle meditation also lets you issue orders regardless of rank. So if your order card says troopers you can order a vehicle instead. Ive used it to activate a big unit instead of the character on the card. It’s a super situational thing but it’s helped

If you haven't yet played Chain of Command, you should check it out. You roll dice to determine which unit(s) you'll be able to activate, and those same dice also determine which player will go next, as well as provide you some possibility for interrupting your opponent's go.

Dirtside 2, Stargrunt 2, One page rules, Space Weirdos ($5) and any other free ruleset or under $5. The best when you can use cheap miniatures like rebased heroclix.

I love the activation systems in WRG's ancients rules and Fantasy Warlord. Basically in WRG, you give orders to your troop at the begining of the game, then each turn your troops must follow some imposed manoeuvers caused by said order before going for a more "classic" way of doing things, the twist is that the turns are simultaneous. Fantasy Warlord also uses simultaneous turns, but you have to roll to know which troops will follow orders or not, and lay down orders each turn for the ones that do, once all orders are layed down, they're revealed and played out simultaneously.
@17blazikenАй бұрын
Gervasio going great on the subject, one of the weirdest yet interesting activation system i found out is MESBG one. Is an IGUG but each phases is alternated, instead of the whole turn. So i move, than you move, than i shoot than you shoot than everyone fight, repeat. Oh, and the top turn player (so who does stuff first) is randomized each turn, with tie broken toward who did not have ghe initiative in the previous turn.

I know others have mentioned Forbidden Psalm/Kill Sample Process/The Last War, but I can't sing their praises enough. A book for $40. A single box of Frostgrave or Stargrave minis for $20-$30. Whatever random terrain (or poorhammer soda cans) sitting around you have, and you've got enough for two players with detailed campaigns in the books already. And since rolling up a warband or crew takes only 15 minutes or so, they are wicked easy to pick up and play, while not taking away from actual substantial gameplay.

Good summary video. One thing I will note is that they did say at the start of their big announcement panel is that this is part 1 of a 2 part refresh of the game. Part 2 is going to come with more unit changes and is not due until Q2 of 2025, this is why the card packs aren't due out until this time next year. Because they want to have every together as opposed to doing 'card pack release 1' etc. Part of me just wants part 1 of the card pack now but given we have upgrade card packs 1 and 2 and it's often impossible to get one of them because your waiting for reprints, I can see why they wanted to wait.

I find the original missions and deployment were good in the the fact they offered variety with how you could combine them as well as only having to worry about one singular objective. I don’t see why they couldn’t have just made a new system with the original battle cards, rather than changing what existed (as all the existing modes were good!). Several of the new modes seem to be area control (which is reflected with many of the keyword changes now being move centric).
