RECOMMENDED BY DITTON ???? thats a joke !!! these speakers are way , way , over rated . i cant see what all the fuss is about ??? ive seen all these good reviews so i just had to get a pair . and what a disappointment !!! i already had 3 x pairs of speakers what leaves these in the dust !!! which are wharfedale diamond 6r , denon sc-m41 , and technics sb-cs55 ! all these speakers are louder , more bass , less distortion and better quality . TAKE IT FROM ME . the guy at ditton doesnt know what hes talking about . and if michael yates is worth his salt , he will get a pair of each , review them on youtube and admit that im correct !! all these speakers tested on yamaha a-400 natural sound amp in pristine condition . and recommend to anybody looking for an amplifier below 90 pounds as long as its in perfect condition

Hi, sorry to hear that the Diamond 3's are not sounding right. First of all they will sound lower than the Wharfdale Diamond 6r speakers as the 6r's are rated at 90db and the diamond 3's at 86db. But if the Technics sb-cs55 rated at 85db and the Denon sc-m41 rated at 83 to 86db are louder than the Diamond 3's as you say they are then there is something wrong with the Diamond 3's as I would suspect anyway if they are distorting. The 3's have a reasonable amount of bass and the top end sound very detailed. A nice open sounding pair of speakers for the size and money. I suspect the ones you have are faulty in some way. I have had loads of good feedback from these speakers. As stated in my last few videos or so I have said that as I am not working I can no longer substain buying HiFi units to test I only wish I could.

Great informative video. I’ve been subscribed for a while and have watched many of your videos. You seem like a really nice guy and you know your stuff. If I were to give you some friendly constructive criticism I would say just doing a couple of things could massively improve your channel in my opinion. Firstly spend a bit more time on thumbnails, they are so important and the first thing that attracts people to click on your video.Secondly although I love the way you chat about stuff in a real down-to-earth way …sometimes you do take quite long to get to the point! Think if you streamlined the videos with less waffle that would help performance too. As I said, this is not meant in any kind of malicious way, I’m genuinely just trying to give some pointers! Hi, Thanks for the comment. You are only to right my wife amoung others tells me I rattle on and on. Funny thing is I know I do and I tell myself get to the point straight away. Then I turn the camera on and it all goes out the window. The thumbnails are very important as you say, but alas I am usless at art and colour matching, making stuff appealing. I do try and this is my best lol. I did have 2 offers come in for a 3rd party to do the thumbnails both wanted £25 per one, which sounds fair enough but not for the amount of views I get. I would have to get 10k views just to pay for the thumbnail. I am winding right down on the HiFi now and may put an odd video up now and then just to tick the channel over. Yeah absolutely Mike, I remember early 80s when we still had 3 channels (and all of them closed down at night) and programmes like Song of Praise or Antiques Roadshow or Last of the Summer Wine would get 5 million viewers lol! Well maybe not that many but it was probably quite high. I think Bullseye and That's Life used to draw in 20 million viewers! It's unheard of now. Now if a series or programme gets 5 mill, it's considered a success! Too many channels, too many streaming channels, too much content online. And you know what, all this choice is great and it was a mere dream back then in the 70s and 80s, but I don't think it makes us an happier than when we had 3 channels. (remember when old telly's had ITV2 and ITV3 on the buttons but no actual channels to watch!). It's insane and overwhelming how much choice we have now. I don't watch mainstream telly now as a) nothing there I want to watch b) too many political leanings and lecturing in all programmes now c) I refuse to pay the TV licence to the Beeb anymore d) can find something on KZbin more interesting, such as your channel. Anyways, off topic I know.

My only thought is that with age (and the fact that I worked around jet engines for 40+ years) I admit my hearing in certain areas is not close to being perfect. I use the gain in treble and bass to compensate for hearing loss. While I can still hear 40hz to 1K pretty well, once I get into 800hz to 4K it gets a little muddled. I think control, for me, helps me to get the sound that I enjoy and more importantly hear. If you are in your 60's and can still differentiate frequencies, I admire that and a little jealous

This debate has been going on since Ivor Tiefenbrun first set out from Glasgow with his turntable tucked under his arm. In case you don’t know his story, he bought a Hi-Fi system using the classic method at the time, which was to spend the most money on the speakers, then amp and finally source. He was unhappy with the sound so duly went back to the dealer and swapped to a more expensive amp. Result, worse sound. Finally he realised that the better the amp and speakers, the more faithfully they reproduced the rubbish being fed in by the turntable. So he decided to build his own, no doubt having been influenced by contemporary designs by companies like Thorens. I’ve followed this philosophy for 40 plus years and it’s resulted in many lovely sounding systems and yes, I do own one of Ivor’s decks. You’re right a really weak link will bring down the system, but what you lose at the source can never be recovered. With a high quality source, the fundamentals of the music will flow through and still be present, even if, for example, the bass isn’t as deep as you might wish. It will still be controlled and consist of more than a single booming note.

I'm currently using 2 amplifiers upstairs: the Myryad t40, Ma240 power, and a Cyrus 8vs. Neither has bass and treble controls. The Myryad has a warm, lovely sound, with a full bass, a massive sound stage, and great separation. The Cyrus, on the other hand, has a detailed, clean, and natural sound, similar to a Yamaha amp, with no distortion. They have completely different sounds. Personally, I prefer the Myryad, but I wouldn't sell my Cyrus setup or psxr power supply. They are very different, but when I switch between them using an amp switch, I find myself listening to each other equally. I would be reluctant to buy MS with tone controls as the signal path is more prone to noise. I enjoy listening to how the amp was made. I do have RCA cables to change the sound just slightly with silver RCA and copper. I find a mix of the two sounds perfect as the sliver gives top end and coper fullness. I know, I know, I sound a bit of an audiophile, but that's my findings: copper from per to power, silver from the source, and silver copper speaker cables. I really do change the sound, but just a tiny bit.

Here we go with the audiophile bashing. Well done for missing the point, as usual. The Hi-Fi industry is out to make money and they do this by selling hardware. If they make a good sounding product it is given 5 stars in the magazine read by audiophiles. Ergo, audiophiles help make better sounding gear for everyone, not just audiophiles. You’re welcome. If all you’re interested in is tonal balance, adjust your tone controls and move on. At a certain point, some folks who are passionate about music want to hear more than just the right amount of bass and treble. They want texture from the strings, reverb decay on cymbal hits, perfect timing to preserve rhythm, a stereo image that has width, depth and even height and so much more. Everything in the signal path degrades information. So for some, like me, less interference is more enjoyment. Tonal balance is fixed by component matching to the room. An audiophile is someone who cares about the sound of the music as much as the music itself and I’m not apologising for that.

Many years ago, when I got into audio as a hobby. I met several people over the years, that firmly believed, that the tone, or treble & bass controls, should be used in the most minimalistic way possible. They couldn’t understand, why my system was very full, bass rich with very nice kids & highs. Then, I took them to a Status Quo concert, they kind of got the idea after that. Although, I was using 4 x Krell 300 series power amps, and a very large pair of (model escapes me)DM Bowers & Wilkins loudspeakers, they could produce a similar sound, and a realistic volume to boot.

I still run a mint final model Audiolab 8000A, a classic British amp if ever there was one that still sounds great and hey... it has bypassable bass and treble and nobody ever complained about the fact. They're subtle in effect but I'll be buggered if anybody has ever been able to tell the difference between them on and left at 0 or them bypassed. Bring back subtle and well implemented tone controls, with some recordings in some rooms they can be a godsend.

Flat response out of the amp or receiver generally sounds like total rubbish. Lifeless and boring. Room acoustics, speaker roll-offs in the bass and treble ranges all demand AT LEAST some more bass/treble or better yet a 12 or 30 band EQ in the signal path.

If it sounds dull and boring it’s time to change your components to something that isn’t. I built a second hand turnable based system for £300 that is anything but dull and boring and doesn’t need tone controls. I tried three different amps in the system from Marantz, Pioneer and NAD. Only the NAD phono stage was worth having, the other two were lifeless, dull and boring. No amount of bass or treble boost was going to fix it.

@@markcarrington8565 Interesting take. I wonder why recording mixers adjust levels of various inputs and have parametric EQs on them. Maybe they should take all the mic levels in at exactly the same dB levels and put that out as the recording.... Oh right, that would sound like shit. Hence using EQ's happens and will happen for people that don't have flat hearing from 20-20k, anechoic listening rooms with nothing but $900,000 speakers in them and you have to stand in the dead center of the room to get that sound you like.

IMHO, The over-arching criteria is to find the matching speakers. The toneless NAD C338 class D amp matches with Mordaunt Shorts(89dB-90dB) e.g. the Mezzo 2 and MS10. I personally do not tweak it to more than +2dB for treble and bass as my ears aclimatise. But on phono..the loudness and treble sometimes gets a bump up to +6dB. Marantz and Cambridge Audio amp requires +2dB increase for the treble and bass for less sensitive speakers < 88 dB. Bottom line I must have those tone buttons adjusted unless my speakers are of higher sensitivity>89dB with those super precise aluminium dome tweeters.

I used to be a devout follower of the 'wire with gain' church. Ended up designing and making my own pre's and poweramps. Now I consider tone control an absolute necessity... all recordings sound different and some are pretty bad, I want to listen to them all and compensate for the recording and my room's imperfections. This usually means a fairly tiny amount of adjustment. And my tone circuit can be completely disconnected from the signal. Most of the bad wrap tone controls got was due to terrible tone circuits on commercial hi-fi.

Is the sound "neutral", even when the bass & treble controls are set to midpoint on the front panel? If you're so bothered about tone controls then maybe a preamp without them is what's required. Recordings aren't flat, they all vary and some are bloody awful which means you'd be changing the settings each time you play a different CD or whatever.

I think benchmarks really work with sources and amplifiers. In my experience equipment with the lowest distortion and coloration really do make a difference. Evn between headphones and speakers. Speakers are much more complex as now you have much more things that can be different or wrong. Soundstage, seperation on and off channel axis performance. Some speakers (and headphones) can make anything sound good. Others sound better with better sources. I would say start with good speakers because whatever you change later will only improve the sound. Know your listening environment. Mid or cheap speakers will not sound better with better sources and amplifiers while you should be able to hear the difference with good speakers.

I think life would be dull without audiophiles. They remind of the mad scientists we used to see on shows like The Avengers back in the sixties. On the one hand, they freely acknowledge that a high percentage of what they are hearing are the effects of the room itself, while on the other they baulk at the idea of tone controls sullying the purity of the signal, preferring instead to shell out a King's ransom on uber expensive interconnects, speaker cables, and hi-tech room correction. Bless 'em, in that regard they are an essential component of every nation's economy, and long may they reign as such! Me, I'm an old fashioned lad. EXACTLY. Anti-EQ or Anti-Bass/Treble control snobs are idiots and I laugh at them with their $100,000 power cables and $50,000 five foot speaker cables going to bookshelf speakers. I do what I WANT to my sound output. If that means a recording sounds like crap because of the recording mix, Yes, I will adjust my EQ levels AND the bass and treble knobs.

You make a lot of statements which lead us to conclusion that it is impossible to recognize perfect souund in room I would conquer that opinion Because I experienced such sound and everybody who came and listen then was stunned. Gear was top class mono tube radio with bass , trebble, , switchable sounds, unusual loudness controll and exceptional tube R2R . It had some developed by me modifications and DIY spakers. Available not distorted power was realy very modest. - about 2 W For listener it seems that something impossible happens- Mono sound is like 3D because deepness is properly reproducedand and other dimansions are adequate to room . Suddently appears in head the conclusion that "that's it" and no any efforts of recording engineers can spoil it. I listened to recording done by average person in gig standing in crowd with mono cessette recorder in hand and I was convinced that I am there . Or recording done in 1953 on street and felt like on street. In such case room and speakers are united. . . Yes - i found one perfect position of tone controlls and their position had to be tuned exactly. They were essential but once set no more adjusted. It was 50 year ago and in that time I did not realise how unique it was - lost it and took me life time toget it back in enough degree - the reason is that my listening room is about 2 times too big. I get much lower tones but mid bass is say 90%. that small difference is not enough reaso to change place. .

As an engineer, I guarantee you that no engineer cares one whit how you listen to the music. Audiophiles LOVE to push the idea that engineers or artists INTEND for the music to sound a certain way, but it's just not true. Every system sounds different. Engineers know that, and they try to mix it to sound as good as possible on all systems. It's very difficult to make a record that sounds good on a big system, small system, car, and headphones, and they REALLY don't care if you tweak your tone controls.

THANK YOU! Always try to explain this to people but they are convinced the flat sound on the record is how its supposed to sound.

People don't and can't know what the artists, producers and engineers actually heard in the studio anyway unless they were there and involved. All this "what the artist intended" drivel people talk... I reply "how do you know what the artist intended or heard in the studio?"

Mixing engineers determine where instruments are located in the soundstage by altering left/right balance, volume, reverb etc. The point of Hi-Fi is to be able to reproduce their work as accurately as possible. If there’s a trumpet in the far left background in the outro of a song, I want to hear it without the rest of the foreground music overwhelming it. It would be nice if it sounded like a trumpet as opposed to a random indistinguishable horn too. Any components in the chain will impose their presence on the signal. The better the quality of the component, the less impact it will have and the less it will interfere with it. All a tone control does is alter the output at specific frequencies. Graphic equalisers do it with more granularity and DSP, the modern tone control, does it interactively with the room. None of this can add back the all important detail lost by using extra components in the signal path. And no, this doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to get good sound. I recently built a second hand turntable based system for a beginner for £300. The new owner is delighted with it and they don’t feel the need to twiddle the tone controls to get “better” sound even though the amp is fitted with them. It’s a NAD 3225PE if anyone’s interested.

Good subject Michael! My current amplifier has no tone controls, but I'm not against the use of them. I have seen a few videos a while ago, that reviewed a separate tone control add-on that you could add to a system, which is another option. Happy listening to all 🎶🎵 Jim🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🙂

I've heard this from others also. So I've set the treble, bass, and balance to neutral, and turned loudness off so I can hear the basic differences between 3 receivers of different makes. The Pioneer recently lost the right channel. I pulled it out and yesterday checked it out with a pair of speakers and CD playing into AUX. Yep, right channel out. I started moving the balance from left to right and back, started getting crackling on the right, and then the right channel came back. Appears to be just a dirty pot that I'll clean/lubricate today. Maybe a side effect of not using them at all?
