Congratulations!! incredible work! It is not easy to adapt these ancient texts, but Seikilo does it masterfully. Please, would it be possible to make this text available in Greek? The automatically generated subtitles on KZbin does not correspond to what is being sung… Please write the text in Greek, because for me is it difficult to transcribe. Thank you very much! I always learn a lot with Seikilo!

I often image pagan rituals were inspired not by God directly, but by the nature around them. My first impression was the communication sound of the hump-back whale but from my quick research such whales aren't native to the Ionian Sea. My second impression was that of wind in tunnels at sunset. What's your impression?

@SEIKILO11 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching, Satiros! Yes, this is Hermes' turtle lyre, based on the descriptions in the Homeric Hymns. The luthiers replicated the original turtle lyres using the latest technologies, such as 3D scanning and 3D printing. So, this looks and sounds like the real thing! @@SEIKILO 4/4 is a modern invention.
@SEIKILO7 күн бұрын
What you say is correct, jhaduvala... partially! 4/4 is a modern name for a quite basic rhythm that has been around for thousands of years. For example, in Aristoxenus' Rhythmic Elements, dated back to the 4th century BCE, all the basic rhythm categories are explained. One of these is the dactylic. We read, among many others, that "There are three genera of feet that admit of continuous rhythmic composition: the dactylic and the iambic and the paionic. The dactylic is that in the equal ratio, the iambic in the double, the paionic in the one-and-a-half." This category includes all the 1:1 rhythms, for example, the modern rhythm 4/4. We just completed a quite time-consuming research project on Aristoxenus' work, and soon, two books will be published by SEIKILO, targeting the modern lyre player and the modern musician in general: "Harmonic Elements" and "Rhythmic Elements." The latter includes much information about the dactylic category of rhythms in ancient Greek music theory. The books will become available during February, hopefully, at luthieros.com/lyre-learning-books/ Hope that helps!
@jhaduvala6 күн бұрын
@@SEIKILO Maybe. But it's simplistic to say 4/4 is a "modern name" for a basic rhythm. The Greeks were more guided by poetic rhythms, so arsis and thesis come into play. 4/4 has a downbeat on the 1. It's a particular feel. There's no guarantee that the Greeks had a similar approach to down and up beats as we do. Is there evidence to say there is?
@chrisnewbury37936 күн бұрын
@@jhaduvala that's ridiculous. 4/4 is just a natural extension of 2/2 or 2/4. Nothing is new under The Sun, son.

For absolute beginners I recommend you reconsider getting this instrument- the tuning is hard and it doesn’t stay longer than a few minutes. I’ve done chalk and I’ve gotten the hang of it(barely) but the tuning prevents free flowing learning- I found other people experiencing the same issue on Reddit. Beautiful but if you have to tune every 3 minutes it makes the experience not fun.
@SEIKILO22 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and the comment, Angel! Based on our extensive experience with the LUTHIEROS lyres, this is only true at the beginning, as with any other string musical instrument (electric guitars and similar instruments are slightly different). It makes sense as it takes some time for the string tension (and, therefore, for the tuning) to settle down due to using natural materials. You can expect 2 weeks up to a month of regular tuning before being able to leave a lyre unused for weeks and expect the instrument to stay more or less tuned (in that case, the tuning still changes slightly for every string, but with the same rate, resulting to a tuned lyre slightly lower than tuned initially). As most of our affiliate artists have a background in string musical instruments (guitar, violin, viola, harp, etc.), we can verify that this is generally true when someone uses strings from natural materials (gut string, sugar cane strings). It takes less time to stabilize a tuning when you use, for example, steel-core strings, but this doesn't come without disadvantages; sugarcane strings are much easier to produce harmonics and gentler to our fingers in the long run, compared to steel strings. So, when you say "absolute beginners," do you mean absolute beginners on the lyre or in string musical instruments in general? If it is for the latter, you can expect the same process to stabilize a tuning compared to any other string instrument. If it is for the former, then playing a string musical instrument requires patience and intentionality; it was never an out-of-the-box experience as it is with software or electronic devices. All in all, when the lyre has a stabilized tuning, then the learning curve is much smoother than any other string musical instrument, such as a guitar or a violin. So, keep that in mind! Having said that, the LUTHIEROS team has put together a webpage, especially for beginners, and you can access it here: luthieros.com/start/. They regularly update it with new content, so a good idea (thanks to your message) might be to add a video about what to expect in the first weeks when you are a beginner! We will share this thought with them, and hope to see the video soon! In case you are a student at LyreAcademy.com, then you can ask for personalized feedback and guidance from your tutors at their weekly live video sessions on the Private Student Group on Facebook. Let us (or them) know if we need more help!
