If you ever get to listen how Mark builds his engines and set up his drag car you'll know. I've been following Mark online in different forums, where he posts this information for free, for years! He really knows his stuff and has all the time slips to back up every word he says. It's not always about big horsepower numbers and this or that gadget go fast part. It's about how you use it and what you do with it that makes you go fast. Mark has been honing his craft for many years.

Mark ( vortecpro) knows more about converters, rear gear,tyres,starline ratio,suspension etc from his stock eliminator experience. I bet that camaro does low 1.4s in the 60ft. Everyone thinks it's about max hp but average hp and how well the engine hangs on past peak ( overrev) is part of the secret to running quick in the first 660ft of the quarter mile.

In order for you to have eight to one compression on that damn 400 small block you’ve got to have a set of 400 heads on that thing with a combustion chamber in the 80s. It doesn’t matter you could take a 350 head a regular ragged 882 and it would put it at a nine to one if you put a 300 horse head on there you’re looking at almost 11 to one. That’s a 64 cc head That’s even with the Soup Bowl if you’ve got flat tops with a 64 cc head you’re looking at almost 13 to 1 compression. I’ve got a 434 small block with domes in it and 72 cc heads and it’s almost 14 to one compression ratio
@dzperformance73605 күн бұрын

I had almost an identical build, just with a roller cam that was a few degrees bigger. It was in a light 3/4 ton '93 gmc with a 5 speed. That thing would move for how heavy it was. It would chirp the tires shifting into 3rd at about 60 mph. It would also pull a loaded car trailer without any trouble.

Great info! I'm looking to swap in a stock 454 from a 1985 chevy 3/4 ton truck into my little short bed square -so what youre saying is, it'll have 330 hp stock and 400 plus foot pounds of torque? I thought they made WAY less power than that.
@dzperformance736017 күн бұрын
Yeah about any 454 that runs good will make that kind of power you can go to KZbin and watch RV 454 videos and that horsepower is pretty standard

Hi nick i have some questions, sorry for being a novice to big blocks but when you say you put those 911-16 springs in, that's all you did? no replacement retainers or locks?, i know little big about small blocks but i've just got a Mark IV 454 that was running out a RV, some good 781 heads and planning to get some retrofit lifters and that cam/a very close copy by mellings (MEL-22236) and find out what push rods or just ask you cause what length since it seems i'm making a clone of this. Cam and head swap and intake and stuffing it in a 79 z28 Thanks for your time and reading.
@dzperformance736022 күн бұрын
I changed cap and locks to 748 - 16 caps 612 - 16 locks (cap and locks on the older 60s heads will work) ( keep in mind the factory locks are 7° the ones that I used are 10° they do not interchange with the same caps) it dangerous using 50 year old locks you can drop a valve. I don't recommend using old locks. 90% of 454 is are tapped for a retainer plate on the front and you can use a step nose cam if you didn't want to mess with the cam button push rods you're just going to have to measure them and have custom length of my it seems like everyone slightly different

Is there a reason you used closed chamber heads for this build? I have the parts around to build this combo, but the heads i have are open chamber heads casting #820
@dzperformance736026 күн бұрын
The domes on the Pistons are made for closed chamber or open chamber but they're only 17 CC's so you will only have a compression ratio of low 9s approximately 9.3 to 1 with open chamber heads. Most closed chamber heads will get you approximately 10.7 to 1
