Lynda LaPlante is a great writer of crime stories. I find the central detective characters in this series quite unlikeable, though. They are cold and jaded from years of seeing the worst of humanity, and in this case the young woman and her mother were correct about the callousness of the police toward the husband's disappearance. Penny Downie's very understated indictment of the female detective was spot on and powerful: she lacked empathy for the young wife and her family, and dismissed their suffering, it appears because they were wealthy. Mike is very much in the same vein. It's not surprising that he can't sustain a relationship. He's a nasty, self-centered A-hole pretty much 90% of the time.
