Finally someone who does the testing right: precise definition of the amount of water used, same starting temperature for both stoves, one brand new canister for each stove. I know that differences might be minor, but if boiling times are so important to some of us, at least they should be measured with fixed criteria 😉

So, is it safe to assume that you were not spraying into the wind? That would cut down the effectiveness to maybe 10ft if a bear were rushing at you and the wind was not on your side (not to mention maybe getting sprayed yourself :-( ) Just a guestimate.

I have found this boot to be incredibly stiff, especially in the sole, to the point where it began causing pain in my feet. I do not intend to use crampons or engage in ice climbing, so I may be using the wrong boot. My first hike with these boots was up the Potts Mountain Jeep Trail (a steep, rocky trail) in southwest V.A. It is a 4.2 mile ascent covering ~1500 feet. I had roughly 50 lbs of gear in an osprey pack.
@rockmunkey19812 жыл бұрын
It's a B2 boot which is designed with a much stiffer sole for use with crampons while climbing. A B1 boot is more insulated than your average boot for winter walking and takes a flexible C1 type crampon. It will jave much more flex than the Crow. If you like salewa check out the mountain trainer mid gtx.

How would you say the Windmaster compares to the Amicus in terms of actual cooking (frying an egg, pancakes, sautéing vegetables, etc.)? I do long distance bike tours with my wife, and am looking for a compact top-of-cannister style stove for actual cooking, not just boiling water.
@ArmchairOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I would go with the Windmaster for a couple of reasons. Bike touring is not as subjective to a few extra grams of weight and the difference in space between the two is quite negligible. The Windmaster will put the pot closer to the burner head and make for better control of the temp in your pot/pan if there's any breeze. I would also use the 4 prong support to give you more stability for bigger pans. And finally I would pick up a stove stand that clips the the base of the fuel canister such as MSR's three prong folding stand.
@isaacmoyer52663 жыл бұрын
@@ArmchairOutdoors Thanks for the advice! I like the Windmaster's wider, more stable pot support and the wider burner head, but wasn't sure if having the its burner closer to the pan would cause a worse hotspot in the center of the fry pan, or if there was any difference in how low the stoves can get at their lowest setting.
@ArmchairOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@isaacmoyer5266 You bet! There is a little bit more risk of getting a hot spot at the center with the Windmaster but not too much as the flame really does spread out nicely. I have found that the pan material is important in this regard though. For my thin single layer stainless cookware, I tend to get hot spots in the center. With a little bit thicker cookware this helps mitigate the problem. To be fully honest, I would rather risk a little bit of a hotspot than to see my meal end up in the dirt because of a pot stand that was undersized! :) And as for how low they can regulate themselves they are both good. But again I would give the edge to the Windmaster.
@StarfishPrime73 жыл бұрын
great concise video. well done. I have the amicus for a couple years and love it. it is loud. I particularly like the 4 prong pot support and often opt for the amicus over my MSR pocket rocket 2 deluxe. Based in large part on your review, my next stove will be the Windmaster with a 4 prong support, just wish the bag was as nice as the amicus. Thanks for the great vid.

When do you tell us about the tincture of benzoine? I was thinking to use iodine as a disinfectant for wounds, then I could use it to disinfect water in a pinch. What do you think about that idea?
@ArmchairOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I’ll have to take a look again and see if I mention the tincture of benzoin. The tincture of benzoin is a topical use item for skin but it really helps when you need moleskin to stick better. Tincture of benzoin should not be consumed nor is it similar to iodine. However, I have purchased iodine before as water treatment and thought of also using it for its antiseptic qualities. The issue is that I don’t know if the iodine used in water treatment is the exact same as iodine used as an antiseptic. I personally think it’s a pretty good idea but I would make sure you do some research or consult a physician first. Thanks!

I personally wouldn't use them as a dedicated winter boot. In a pinch and if I truly had to go light and fast then I might. But if there is any potential for weather colder than about 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit there is no way I would want to make this my summit boot.
