Desperation move by the sumo council. I'm a huge fan of Hoshoryu but they're shoe-horning him in because they need a new Yokozuna

Hiro Morita interviewed Hakuhō a couple of years back : He said, It wasn't until he became a yokozuna that he learnt that being a yokozuna requires particular mental strength. I honestly don't feel Hoshoryu's got what it takes. Yes he always has a swagger like his uncle, but it takes more than self-belief. As others have pointed out winning is a huge part of the responsibility of the highest rank. He has not (yet) had a Zenshō-yusho, so November was more of an exceptional basho for him. He's done the bare minimum to get there, we can survive without a Yokozuna for a while. For me it would be wrong to promote him too soon. He may get there one day, but don't force things.

The most successful Yokozuna in history had these words of praise for Hōshōryu during that interview. "He relies a lot on throws but I like his attitude of never giving up. He has a great fighting spirit and needs to improve in mental strength. His fighting spirit is just as strong as that of his uncle (Asashoryu), even if he also has to put on a few pounds. Sometimes he is too impetuous and loses because of his mistakes."

I've really gone off ho-sho-ryu. there's been some bouts where he's thrown opponents out and given them a death stare on the floor, like he's saying "get out and stay out". poor form IMO and following in the footsteps of his uncle, asashoryu

Promotion to yokozuna (Horshoryu Tomokatsu) Meeting on 27 January 2025, the Yokozuna Deliberation Council received the formal request from the Sumo Association regarding Hōshōryū's promotion to the highest rank in professional sumo as the 74th yokozuna in the sport's history. After debate, the nine-member council unanimously recommended Hōshōryū's promotion. The full board of the Sumo Association is expected to accept the recommendation and make Hōshōryū's promotion official on 29 January.[2]

Hoshoryu’s technique is simply sublime. He doesn’t have the biggest size but is so comfortable at where he is, his stability is akin to Hakuho.

I am supporting Hoshoryu but this is the promotion to Yokozuna. I think they should wait to see how he perform in the next basho like the case of Takakeisho. 🤔

Here's what Hoshoryu's name means and how it's written and pronounced, from NHK - The first Chinese character, 豊 (“Ho”) is from his stablemaster’s ring name, Asahiyutaka (旭豊) . “Shoryu” is from his uncle, the 68th Yokozuna ASASHORYU (朝青龍). He uses the Chinese character 昇 (“sho”), as it means “rising.”

Tied for second, hurray! Emperor Naruhito did come to watch Sumo on day 14 of the January basho in 2020 (Covered in videos 3794 and 3797 of your video archive), of course it has been a while so it would be nice to see him return, particularly as this new generation of wrestlers is establishing itself. Thanks for your coverage Jason!

IMO, people are viewing the Playoff Win in the wrong light, especially as it comes to Rank. 12-3 and winning 2 playoff matches should not be valued any differently than a standard 12-3 win. It for sure is not better than a 13-2 or higher regular win. If a 13-2 runner up and a 12-3 win are good enough for a promotion than great. The fact it was in a playoff shouldn't have any effect, especially at a good but not great win total. In baseball, is winning a game 2-1 in extra innings more impressive than winning a game 2-1 in regulation? If anything you could ascribe a negative connotation to it. I do think they will give it to him though, and I think he has the talent to be a good Yokozuna.

I think not yet, he is definitely a contender but in my opinion Hoshoryu needs to either win the yusho or be runner up with at most 2 losses and even then it’s who he loses to, don’t want to be Yokozuna and be given out Gold Stars. I think if he wins the next yusho then it’s time for promotion.

What would they have done if Hoshoryu had won his first 12, lost his last 3 (which would have thus included a loss to Kotozakura, a demotion-threatened "kadoban" ozeki), then won the playoffs? I've a feeling it wouldn't be so sure they would have promoted him. It's not just 12-3 and a title that carried him to Yokozuna. It's losing his first 3 straight, then digging in with 12 straight wins in regulation, then 2 in playoffs...14 wins in a row, that clinched him the white rope. He deserves it, IMHO.
@sumojason3 күн бұрын
Hoshoryu didn't win 12 in a row... he lost on days 5, 8 and 9. But he won 6 in a row from Day 10 and then 3 in a row on Day 15 to win the yusho. Impressive indeed!
@orlandofurioso79583 күн бұрын
@sumojason You are correct. I misread an article by John Gunning. As I did not watch daily, I failed catch my misreading of Gunning's article. Let's chalk this up to my forcing myself stay awake until 4AM to watch the English broadcast live on NHK...and sleep deprived. I'm paying for it with unforced errors!

Watching from Cleveland, Ohio. I only just started watching sumo a year ago and I’m grateful for your channel. Watching Hoshoryu come from behind to win has been the most exciting event I’ve seen. 私は熱海富士応援する!

His statement was "Meh" and needed help just to make a playoff today. He was great in the playoff though.
