In response to @ElleKelsheimer 9 years ago “You are both extremely exceptional and totally insignificant ...” I’m reminded from Christian (Biblical) beliefs that we are born in original sin and yet are told that all of creation was made with us in mind. Going from a sense of abjection to one of incomparable value. So, maybe, the idea of being both extremely exceptional and totally insignificant is yet another archetype of belief in the human species. The facts presented by the universe itself seem to be at the bedrock of religious faith and modern science; different interpretations of the same thing. Personally, I prefer the science interpretation. The religious one, seems to me, is based on the need to be taken care of; infantile dependence; a lack of personal responsibility. Carl Sagan was brilliant. He could expose the dirt without talkin’ trash. His concern, as I hear it, was for all people, not selected religious or political groups. A model human.

Except for we don't need a separate entity that is God to feel like everything. Because the universe is within and we are the universe experiencing itself. All that is God as you put it is already in us

That's an odd description for someone who can be everywhere at once but still never shows up for anything that happens to you, good or bad. I suggest that instead of imagining some perfect fantasy being loving you, you do the hard work of making yourself worthy of the love of real human beings around you.

there comes a deep sense of suffering from being so concious about everything. I think many depressions just stem from realizing so deeply what actual reality may seem to be. Religions were part of our understanding for probably one hundred thousands of years, and telescopes shattered it all

That kind of suffering only comes from science shattering illusions that religion created and imposed in the first place. We had no reason or right, as a species, to consider ourselves important to anyone except those immediately around us, so abandoning that notion is an important step in our growth even if it has been temporarily painful.

So much that I have heard and hear, from the late, great, Carl Sagan is profound and sometimes prophetic. Whether written for him or by him, I don’t know. It doesn’t matter to me. If I listen, I can find such meaning and learning in all he offered.

The whole problem I have with the Big Bang is that nothing from the past is given credit for not being there anymore - magically all the light from the “beginning” is still passing by Earth, and Sagan is excellent at pointing it out 👌🏽

Love it when a boomer is shallow and ignorant and gets treated like he is saying some revolutionary shit. Electronics aren’t just “a piece of electronic turning us into mindless crowds” simply because in the right hands they can be used to manipulate, help, ask for help and inform yourself. Plus, I bet the mindless crowds actually have their own stories and interesting things to tell. Money was invented to make trade as fair as one could make, which is safer as resources dwindle and much more comfortable than carrying a block of ice to exchange for a meat piece. I fight depression and chronic neuropathy from losing my left leg in a training accident right after Desert Storm tooth and nail every single day. When I've made it through another day I listen to Carl or to Neil before I pray. I pray I won't wake up. And then I do and I have to fight another day. Day after day. The pain and suffering will just make Heaven even sweeter. If that's possible. I will fight the good fight. I'll finish my race. I have faith.

Ironic that it is atheism and humanism that is all the more arrogant than religiosity in its proper spirit, at least Christianity, which was the religion which Carl was rebelling against. When it is so plain to see, for any truly honest enquirer, both in rational philosophy and in the practice of empirical scientific observation, that a suprapersonal God is clearly real. Also, as a side note, it’s too bad that he was exposed to so many literal creationists. Perhaps if he had been born into a devoutly practicing Catholic family, for example, things would have been different. It was, after all, a Catholic priest who first proposed the Big Bang Theory and it’s accompanying physics, and a Catholic priest who founded modern genetics and enriched our understanding of the basis for evolution forever, etc. Perhaps he would not have felt the need to grind the axe against religion as characteristically hard as he did throughout his life, and realize the perfect reconcilability of religion with science. Poor Carl. So wise and yet blind to these things. At least we can be blessed with some of the good things he did, even if he did and said some bad too. May God have mercy upon him.

I don't find the existence of God plain or evident at all, and I've spent ample time considering all of the philosophical arguments and empirical observations that theists repeatedly offer. While your statement isn't quite what I would call arrogant, it is certainly condescending, amounting to "if you don't see it my way, you're an idiot or a liar," when you are probably well aware that many intelligent and honest people do not in fact see it your way. And if your claim is false, then your conclusion about atheism and humanism being arrogant likewise falls to the ground. So maybe you would have done better actually demonstrating the plainness of God's existence instead of just insulting those who disagree with you. As for Carl Sagan being exposed to the wrong believers, is that not entirely the fault of the "right" believers or even of God himself? If you have the right information and others are putting out the wrong information, the burden is entirely on you to correct that, and show both them and other listeners that they have it wrong, because you or your like-minded brethren are the only ones who CAN, being the only possessors of the right information. Yet we have now had over two millennia of Christians of all varieties giving out conflicting claims and stories, sometimes resulting in widespread death and destruction, while you pity and blame non-believers for listening to the wrong ones, and the perfect God of truth you argue over remains entirely silent on every question. If neither you nor the God you talk about cares enough to get everyone's stories straight, you can't call us sad or blind just for responding to the most intrusive and harmful ones. I wish you well in life, but I found nothing either persuasive or uplifting in anything you said, only condescending superiority, dismissive and misplaced pity, and unsupported claims. Carl Sagan, by contrast, was guilty of none of these things.

Thanks.. I wonder why no one discusses such ideas,these thinkers. All these should be taught in elementary level. Knowing where we stand will only help us to advance on a right path as a species. Otherwise we are doomed.i know univers is doomedthats the rule.but we a will be because of our stupidity and ignorance. Our rigidity not to accept truth and carryon with our primitive prejudices even without any evidence. Thanks Carl,Neil,Stephen,brian,Richard,Steven,and many more elite thinkers because ofwhom i find myself at enlightened state of mind. I feel pity on those who are still unaware of their existence and so much caught in the race to survive that they forgot to live.
