This story is great and inspiring. I absolutely love the meaning behind this. People criticize the story because they define success as something negative. But the true results from success are absolutely great and in harmony with your life, along with everything you want in this life. Something that betters yourself and everyone you come in contact with. That is my definition to success- being in harmony, happy, healthy, and helping everyone you come in contact with including yourself. Achieving your deepest desires and goals- allowing yourself to feel accomplished and proud. All while benefiting this world and yourself. True happiness.

When I was in 6th grade my math teacher showed the class this video. This speech and that class changed my life.
@RedRoomGamer10 жыл бұрын
A lot of people are taking this speech too literally. He's not saying you should skip sleep entirely or stop breathing (impossible), nor is he purporting that success is measured with a dollar sign. The point is, success is whatever you want it to be. Whether it's to be in the NBA, getting into a good college, or landing the job that will make you feel complete. In order to get where you want to be, you have to be willing to sacrifice. Whether that be a few hours of sleep here and there to finish a paper, or an evening with your friends so you can get a project done. If you're not willing to sacrifice sometimes, you will never achieve what you truly want and most often than not, you'll be stuck in mediocrity. For example, freshman year of college, nights I wouldn't get enough sleep, I would sometimes sleep in and miss a specific class here and there. At the end of the semester, I got a B. I know I didn't try hard enough. I could have definitely gotten an A. But I didn't want success bad enough. I didn't put my whole being into achieving what I was truly capable of. “Without pain, without sacrifice we would have nothing. Like the first monkey shot into space.”

What he's saying is "you gotta be willing to rip off sleep if you want to be successful" ,my point is that he's saying you got to be "willing" ,he doesn't mean literally forget sleep. In higher terms; things so important as sleep you got to be willing to not do in order to be successful. It's a reference not to be taken literally.

I suffered a concussion in fight against a someone who USED to bully me. At the time I was starting to get into martial arts and a big tournament was coming up. I was looking forward to this tournament for months and I wanted to win BAD! I won first place while recovering from a concussion (which is a really bad idea!) but the point is never lose sight of what matters and that pain, no matter how intense is temporary. Now I am watching this video to remind me of those times. I am going into high school tomorrow and I'm scared as hell but I realized I just need to keep the mentality I had going into that tournament, and I can make it through. @TrueUnderDawgGaming10 жыл бұрын
You're misinterpreting the message. Going without sleep and without food is temporary. It's the sacrifice you make in order to secure a successful and healthy life later on. In other words, true success is the result of sacrifice and dedication. So much so, that you may go a day or two without sleep. You may work so hard that you forget to eat one day. That's all fine. In the end, you don't want to look back and wonder what more you could have given in order to achieve success. You should look back and be honored by how much you gave up in order to achieve success.

I know a guy who works for minimum wage along with his wife but their happiness is gauged through their love for each other and 2 children. Admittedly, I wouldn't feel completely satisfied with this path, but that again is the point, happiness is subjective. You're right on man, don't listen to bollocks breathers with such narrow perspectives. From your retort though I can see you're good on that point anyway. Cheers

So if you're getting the right amount of sleep you should feel guilty for not trying hard enough in your goal...if anything is going to set you up for instant failure, misery and self-loathing, it'll be that. I think quite often we don't even realise how much we really want something until we find ourselves on the right track, or we get a taste of it.
@Etech61911 жыл бұрын
Thats not what they mean by sleep, see you dont know when you want something as bad as they say you should. You dont realize it, you just find your self loosing sleep trying to study whatever your dream is or gettin shit done you just somehow find your self staying up not feeling as tired and if you are tired you still push through just cause you dont want to sleep cause your caught up doing something that you like and want bad. You dont realize it, its like a lucid dream you dont realize youre dreaming until one day you find out youre dreaming and have a lucid dream. When they say you forget to eat is cause you are so god damn caught up on your grind or doing something you love and want that you just forget to eat and you just forget that its 5 am and you still havent went to sleep.

This was so amazing to watch. Not the videos but just hearing him talk. I'm the weakest person in my powerlifting team because I'm one of two girls and I'm the only one who doesn't use supplements. After every practice I think of quitting because I don't belong there. They don't want me there. We're not a team at heart. But I don't quit because I'm doing this for me. Because I know that if I quit they'll either forget I was there or they'll go "of course she quit she's a girl." I'm smart, I'm active, I'm a survivor but I forget that. This video reminds me that my pain isn't for anything. I never took the "blood and sweat and tears" seriously and I do now but my eyes are open to the fact that it's necessary

Those F-ups are called WALLS (or hurdles, obstacles, blockades, etc). We ALL encounter them. The difference between failure (due to unexpected WALLS) is how you deal with them.... Do you lie on the ground and cry about all of those walls until you're so weak from defeat?? ..... Or do you get up, size up that wall and start finding ways to scale over it? The more walls you have to scale in life; the more confidence you build in just how much you can accomplish - WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO! I love the Asthma reference in this video!! When you want success as badly as you want to BREATHE, there're no amount of WALLS that will keep you from getting it!

Don't let the idea of "success" blind you. Success is not as important as breathing and you shouldn't make it so.Focusing your life on one thing will only lead to problems in the areas you are neglecting. Tons of things this guy is saying is totally wrong... sometimes in your pursuit for success you will sustain injuries you won't recover from, some things are impossible for you to do and you shouldn't be ashamed if you give up on a goal. People just need to remember they are human, stop pinning abstract ideas of success and perfection on self worth. Just strive to not be an asshole, best advice i can give.
@Athleteof2sports10 жыл бұрын
There is a word for people like you and its called a loser. There is no injury that life can throw at you that you can't recover from. Whether it be a broken arm, a lost family member, or whatever it is, You WILL recover and whatever life throws at you should motivate you to keep going and to push harder for success. Whatever it may be and nothing is impossible. If you want it more than the next guy you will always succeed. If there are injuries you can't recover from please enlighten me. I would love to show you up right now. Same goes for impossible things. Tell me what things are impossible for you to do if you work hard and actually strive for it.
@glens18account10 жыл бұрын
There are tons of things you can't recover from, I can't believe I have to explain this to you... OK, so imagine a pro downhill biker attempts the most gnarly course imaginable because it's a goal he has, it is his dream, he goes down the treacherous path then makes a mistake and falls to his death, or maybe he breaks both legs in critical positions so he will never walk again, or maybe he breaks his spine so now he is paralyzed. Now go and extrapolate that to all the other extreme sports that "you can do anything and success is the most important thing" is basically a motto. Think of how that sort of mind-set actually amplifies the possibility somebody is going to do something stupid and hurt themselves like this. Or how about the bankers, wall street brokers, big business and politicians who have this mindset, this unwavering ideal of success has lead us to a point where people are solely concerned for themselves, where they rake in ridiculous amounts of money, buy out politics, go into illegal wars for profit and generally make everyone else life relatively shit compared to what it could be. And you cannot do everything, not everything is possible. You cannot jump to the moon, you cannot turn into an orange, you cannot go without food and water without dying, you cannot read peoples minds, you cannot become the best basketball player in the world if you are a midget, you cannot become the leader of north Korea, you cannot teleport yourself to the 1600s... Lots of things are impossible, lots of things are so improbable they might as well be impossible. if you are at the point where nothing is more important than success then you most likely have a mental disorder. You probably have an inferiority complex which makes you feel as if you need some grand success to feel worth something. I am not against success, obviously, but I am against blind pursuit of goals which may bring you success in one area at the fastest rate but actually hurts other areas at the same time. You insulted me and chucked thoughtless questions at me. Yet I still replied. You are ignorant.
@punwisp10 жыл бұрын
You guys are really over thinking it, and taking it all so literally and seriously, completely missing the point. Taking metaphorical as literal. Everything he says is true, if you want to succeed, you can, but its all up to you. You are your own worst enemy. As far as your goal looks like it is, you can get to it if you truly want it. But life is never easy. You have to put your goals above playing video games, parties, tv, etc. To have focus to complete your goal. If you want to be rich, you can, but you have to work at it, and really focus on it. And you don't have to ignore everything else, including family and friends, but you do need to have priorities in life. Goals. To put aside things you don't really need unless time allows it. You have to WANT to succeed. And Hansen, of course there are things you can't recover from, your just being a smart ass, and not understanding what Eric Thomas is saying. But even some things like having both of your legs cut off, can't stop you from running it if you truly want to. It just won't be easy. Life isn't easy or simple. It never is. And the more you move forward, the harder it becomes. The older you get, the more difficult it gets. But Success comes from focus and commitment. Many people would rather stay up all night playing MineCraft or Call of Duty, and go to work the next day tired. Being lazy is easy. Doing nothing is easy. But being successful in life isn't. It takes work. A lot. My sister spent half her life in college and now she is making big goo coo bucks.

Success is not opposing to happiness or love. Everything you ever wanted or needed, someone had to work for it and sacrifice something; rather it was you, your family members or your ancestors, and it's just the exact same with success. Getting a job, an education, a decent spouse is all based on success. So, I'm not understanding how success is blocking ANYONE from being happy.
@punwisp10 жыл бұрын
shawlerstyle Its not telling you to be successful just to be successful. Its telling you if you want to be successful at life, whatever it is you want to accomplish, you can succeed in getting it. As far away as it may look, it may be hard achieve, but you can achieve it. Success is not easy. Not for everyone. For some born exceptionally gifted, they may end up being successful rather easy, but for the average, you probably have to work your ass off to achieve it. But many or most out there, are content. They have there dreams or wants, but don't want it bad enough to go for it, to focus on it. Achieve it. They value sleep, there fav TV show, there fav burger, etc, more then actually wanting to be successful at what they want to do. We live in a lazy society.

After reading these comments, no wonder so many people TRULY BELIEVE that they will never achieve more than working a 9-5 McDonalds job. Success takes a rare mindset. Some people are born with it, some people themselves into evolve into it. Some people never get that mindset, unfortunately for them.

How American. How Western! Which is more important: being happy, or being successful? Speeches like this are indicative of the Western condition - always striving, always wanting, and subsequently never being satisfied. Striving has its merits, but what about contentment? Is there no merit in being happy with what we are given, with what we have? I believe that our cultural indoctrination that we must always chase happiness can be misleading. Instead, I suggest a more balanced approach that also includes the virtue of patience and gratitude; as Thoreau said, "Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder."

@jjhbball9 жыл бұрын
That is a great point - something I wonder about. No doubt that America and other countries have progressed in many ways due to their hard work and striving ethic. I think it then becomes a discussion of balance. Idleness is not a virtue, whereas industriousness is. I suppose we are take our striving too far when our labors are performed just to beat another person. You should be an iOS developer because you are interested in it and want to better society with it, not just because you want to prove to someone that you are better than they are. And I hope you work hard at whatever you do :)

If a gurus advice involves meeting his exact demands when he demands it he is not worth following for the responsibility for you learning should be with the teacher and not the learner. I think we can all agree that happiness is what's most important. If hard work will get you there, then Do hard work, but don't expect financial success to make you happy or whole. It might just leave you with kids that resent you, the love leaving you and you left alone late in life with nothing but a shotgun to keep you company. (Don't take that example too seriously)

Actually, everthing that science tells us about sleep is that the more you sacrifice it, the less you have access to your mental and physical abilities. I despise this glorification of suffering, that started with Jesus on the cross. Nobody asks highly achieving people how happy they are. I would bet that they are not happier than regular folks, on average.

I imagine he is talking about short periods. Not going on for weeks or years. Like you have some big opportunity in a limited timeframe and you need to give it your all, which includes no sleep.

Tor The Divine As a very short term solution, it's not a big deal. And I would hope this is what he means... but there are plenty of people who think this is a valid lifestyle, which is so toxic.

For years I've dreamed about Ivy League schools. And there are times where I sit here and I tell myself that I can't do it. Because I watch and I see the people who aren't making it. The people that didn't try hard enough... I know what it feels like to try your hardest. It sucks, because you are putting everything you have into something and you don't know if it will work out. But what I put effort into, I... I let go of. I abandoned it because it got to hard. Because I couldn't handle the pressure. Because I couldn't prioritize. I'm not going to let school hit the fan. I won't let school meet the same fate. For the next 4 years, I will try. Thankyou for these kind of videos, because they help me keep going.

Fuck it. Except the Chaplin's speech, every single "motivationnal video" is about sport! Come on guys! Sport is the symbol of the effort, but shit , push ups aren't the hardest fight you'll have to face in your life! NO. The hardest will be to love as hard as you live. When you hear the chaplin's speech about humanity, you MUST got this feeling that it is way more deep than trying to be a muscle monster.

The term 'succes' can be interpreted in many different ways. I've learnt that being succesful has nothing to do with having loads of money/fame/recognition but being succesful has everything to do with love, sharing and being happy where you are in life right now. I am succesful, because I'm happy.

You are on the right track. One of the things to know about success is you sometimes go through 3 days without sleep and dont even notice. Im sure meth counts also.

This video is good but it I s also misleading. 1 success in life include good health and many other things. And breathing is just one part of it. What is the point of breathing if you are constantly in poor health. So no you can not go without sleep. For example given here to get your GED one just need show up everyday to class and be ready to learn. Research have shown that late night studyung for test give you lower score than some one who is is well rested. And opportunity come to those are well prepared through out their life.

***** Yeah. You keep to this, and do go three to four days without sleep and 'just breath' like this fool in the video tells you too, GOOD LUCK on becoming 'successful' in life, visiting the Hospital, 'missing out on the moment you could become successful' while you are recovering on a hospital bed with I.V's and heartbeat sensors sticking out of your body. "You want to Succeed? You gotta' breath, as bad as you want to live." What ignorance that is. When we, the living bodies, breath by nature - its common sense, and this fool tells the world to forget sleep, and sacrifice sleep to succeed in life when sleeping IS YOUR LIFE.
@ajjohnson53199 жыл бұрын
Of course I'm going to get needed sleep, but I am going to sacrifice to become successful, and if you don't want to, that's okay; however, do not complain when you don't get in life where you want and do not blame others for your failure. It is on you, and you alone.

I'm currently Studying psychology for a career in day trading and every word he says in this video relates to my studies and trading, and sometimes I have only slept 3 hours because of the time and research I have put into it, also pain, any trader will know you experience pain at some point as a trader its unavoidable, but you need to experience it to better yourself and learn from your mistakes, when you feel pain in what your doing don't think "im never doing that again" and give up! a baby don't try to walk, fall over, and give up for the rest of their life, they get up over and over again until they learn to balance, and realise its temporary. I hope I get what I want out of life and everyone else who is pursuing a goal I hope you get it too, condition yourself to believe its achievable
