Late to this review, Donald. I agree 100% that the manual, if you can call it that, is woefully inadequate. I have a DB-20G too and that manual is 28 pages. OTOH, the radio is rated at 40 watts but bench tested at over 50 watts. with good audio quality. So manual aside, it appears to be worth the money based on performance. A basic radio for sure but with powerful guts.

So, I'm going to have to do another update on this radio. I gave it to my son to use and with just a few months of use the radio is cooked. SWR on his antenna were showing 1:1.3 and the radio worked fine but then he noticed he wasn't getting out here recently. We put it on the Bird and it's only pumping about .5 watt out. More info to come.

Hello ' this is John ,WSEJ563" Question what would be a good coax to use for a GMRS Midland 400TX that I'm using for a base
@MCTGMRS78009
@MCTGMRS78009 12 күн бұрын
Midland sells a really good grade coax on their website or Amazon and I have yet to ever have issues with it. It comes with an attached mag mount and the 259 connector is actually an adapter with can be removed for easy pass-through when running the cable.

If you have a windows 10 or 11 computer, this is as easy as pie to program. All you have to do is download the retevis programming software, and your good to go. Trouble is, not many learn how to use the software which is as easy as any HT using chirp. It took me less than 10 minutes to figure it out, and another 20 minutes to fully program.
@MCTGMRS78009
@MCTGMRS78009 12 күн бұрын
So, I think the word "easy" is subjective. In personally believe CHIRP is more "basic", requires less clicks and the terms used are more universal versus the software from Retevis on this radio. Thanks for your feedback, it's always welcome!

Herea my question , if i have a repeater that has 50 watts ouput and the duplexer is a 50 watt but obvious can only run about half that so it doesn’t get into receiver couldnt i just put a 100 watt diplexer inline so i can run repeater at full 50 watts ?
@MCTGMRS78009
@MCTGMRS78009 15 күн бұрын
All duplexers will reduce your Rx output. You would need a stronger output on the radio to overcome the loss. You can also use a higher gain antenna to help circumvent the loss as well.

@@MCTGMRS yea i know that but is it the same amount of loss , my goal is to run the repeater at 50 watts and hope to get out at least 35-40 watts out cause now only having a 50 watt duplexer in line you cant run the repeater at 50 watts cause the tx bleeds into the rx so you need to turn down the tx power of repeater so im hoping with a bigger duplexer it can handle the full 50 watts with out pushing the limits of the duplexer

Yagi directional antenna from Amazon there for the frequencies specific for gmrs they have different sizes that have different dbi ratings The bigger the antenna the more the DBI so the more energy you're putting towards range or focusing in one direction directional antennas of course you get more power more range out of them I have been able to hit repeaters 37 mi on the other side of Tuscaloosa County in West Alabama and it's very wooded here and hilly I have a 30 ft antenna outside and just say it works great I can pick up all over the county very large County at that I paid like 40 bucks for it it was the 7 dbi 400 to 470 MHz UHF Yagi directional antenna

Is it hard to program for the GRMS channels though and to use a repeater? This I think is a business radio. ?? They usually are 16 channels in the UHF frequencies and sometimes you need a license. I would like to be able to use it for GRMS and it would be great to do so and be encrypted if needed. I don't know if that's allowed though so I probably wouldn't use it. Was it easy enough to use the software to program the GRMS channels? Thanks . Good video. ❤

That's a Hytera style antenna. I don't like how the shroud is flat along the socket end. If you thread that antenna on a UV5R there will be a gap. If you try to thread a UV5R antenna onto that radio the rubber shroud might get in the way because the radio's antenna socket is deeper. There's nothing wrong with that antenna, and spares are easy enough to get on Amazon or Ebay. They're just a bit oddball. Hang on to it, one day the FCC will wake up and allow digital on GMRS just like PMR446.

Thank You for the review. I bought a DB-40 G about a month ago. I was fairly happy with it. It is pretty basic radio for the money. It output just under 45 watts, which was unexpected. Now the bad. I made a rookie mistake. I had run a coax to the other side of the house for a future antenna. It was not terminated, not shorted, just open. I hooked up that coax instead of my coax hooked to my GMRS antenna (I have been using the radio for a month with zero problems). I keyed down for less than 3 seconds. Smoke pored out of the radio. I opened the radio and the main chip was melted. Any quality radio will fold back the power to save the radio when the antenna port is open. Not this radio. Again, the coax was open, not shorted...I checked. Bottom line, if you have any problem with your coax or antenna, this radio will roach itself. Not an ideal thing as it cooked itself so quickly. Even with a SWR meter in line, if there was a problem, your radio would be toast before you could hardly realize there was a problem. Radioddity promptly sent me another radio, so kutos to them. Be very careful and be sure to check your coax/antenna on a regular basis. For the asking price, this radio should have high SWR protection. It does not. Buyer beware. Given what happened to my radio, I would not buy one if I knew how easily this radio will fry itself.
