The question the US needs to ask now is "Is the right to bear arms against a potential enemy (who is, in modern times, highly unlikely to ever invade the US) worth the loss of life that mass gun ownership entails? If the answer is "yes" then the matter is closed. If the enemy is perceived to be the Government itself, then that's a whole other question that needs to be asked. Something along the lines of "Can the Government be trusted to protect my rights and liberty, or do I need to arm myself in order to remind it that if the Government can't defend them, then I will?"
