This past election actually was truly the "most important of our lifetime," because it was between a candidate promising to give Washington DC more control over everyday life and one with a record of taking some of that control away from Washington and giving it back to the people.

His argument is still valid in your example. Just because Walz says every game is the most important of the season while completely botching all football analogies, it doesn’t mean it’s actually the most important game. If they’re all important, then none are important…and that’s why my beloved Eagles are consistently a disappointment.

I consider every election important. I’m in California so it’s a given these days how statewide elections are going to end, but ballot measures can have significant impact. Proposition 13 from the 1970’s has managed to keep Newsom and the California legislature from doubling our property taxes. On a daily note, why not make the effort to select the best person for your water district or school board.

Why is it that when I google the election results or read articles following the election I see things like "the AP hasn't called this election"? AP being associated press.... Why do I care if the press hasn't called the election when they aren't any part of the government? Shouldn't it be something from the House or Senate? Some official body...
@liljenborg25172 ай бұрын
Let me offer up a theory: It takes time to program a bot to scan through videos for key words and phrases and plaster those little fact-check banners below videos they think need them. Google (the folks who own KZbin) fully expected Kamala to either win, or the election to be so close in key states that we wouldn’t know for days who won. So they built into their system that little “official fact check” disclaimer to automatically appear on any video about the election that wasn’t completely “rah, rah, Kamala!” Because they fully expected all these videos to be promulgating conspiracy theories about how Trump “really won” and “the Democrats cheated again!” They didn’t expect him to win so clearly - even the popular vote.
@jglotzbach2 ай бұрын
The election isn't officially called until the vote tallies are certified in each state and then forwarded to Congress and given final certification by Congress there. The AP and other media outlets "calling" the election is unofficial, but does serve as a way for people to move forward knowing who won, even if it's unofficial. The constitution gives no means for the federal government to make an official announcement of preliminary results, so it's left to the media to do that.

I agree. Hyperbole is overused in all aspects of American society nowadays, very noticeable in politics but even in things like sports. It seems like every time there is an exciting game or someone has a great individual performance it is “one for the ages”. If everything is critical, nothing is. If everything is urgent, nothing is.

Oh everywhere, and the hyperbole is coming to Europe (via American students). In my European city two lefty protestors in the bus loudly complained about "the fascists": Trump of course, also Bolsonaro, Nethanyahu and the leaders of my country. Then it struck me: they dont mean uniformed leaders in jack boots when they talk about "the fascists": they mean anyone on the right (of them) who constraints their political behavior in some way. The word itself doesnt mean much, it's mainly hyperbole, performance art, cosplay.

Hmm... I see this from a bit of a different angle, or perhaps with the cause and effect reversed. The federal government continues to become more and more powerful, and at least one side (the left) wants to exercise that power in a more and more radical way. I think on the right there are some who do genuinely want to reduce that power, but plenty of others who are ok with the government having that power as long as they're in charge. Either way, the right and left diverge more and more every year (or at least, the left moves further left) so each presidential election truly does seem like the "most important of our lifetime."

Thank you for articulating what I've believed for a long time so well. To paraphrase our President-Elect, let's make elections unimportant again. BTW, the US is a Republic. I'm sick of hearing about "our democracy" or "Democracy is at stake" (which I've been hearing since fall 2020).
@kma36472 ай бұрын
Well, this one was poorly timed. Those same entrenched politicians you just accused of jailing their political opponents (literally by the hundreds, and pressing hundreds of years' worth of bogus charges against their opposition candidate), the ones who demanded censorship "to save our democracy," who branded their political opponents literally Hilter and called them all collectively garbage... those people only narrowly lost, and they only lost because their candidate who so offensive, they inspired literally millions of voters to cross over parties and defect or to come out of the woodwork and vote for the first time in their lives. Had they not done that, we'd be looking at another "81 million votes" sham and the political reality that we'd never ever see another contested election in our lifetime because of the demographic shift that party was promising using mass amnesty for tens of millions of illegal foreign nationals to lock in a permanent majority. We literally were looking at the most important election in a generation, and America just won. The only way we keep it that way is if we can keep the balance of power such that we keep having elections that are actually contested so we don't become a one-party state. We should not belittle mathematical reality. The political strategists and pollsters sure as hell don't.

Adam Conover had a video with a roughly similar premise, except he flubbed the conclusion a bit.
