I really connected with your video. Thank you. I just found the sound of the native American flute so soothing this year. As I'm my first year raw vegan. I have never been able to grasp an instrument as many as I've tried to learn. I feel like this is my true instrument and excited about going forward and buying one and learning

How do you adapt this lesson for a flute with only 5 holes?
@ClintGoss4 ай бұрын
The simple answer is to play it just like a six-hole ... i.e. don't pick up the third finger from the top (the ring finger on your upper hand). When playing the primary scale on these instruments, you always keep that finger down anyway. As you get more advance, there *are* fingerings where you *do* pick up that third finger from the top ... and in those cases there are substitute fingerings on a five-hole flute ... but that's for later ...
@DarthNoshitam4 ай бұрын
@@ClintGoss thanks for your reply! My five hole flute has two holes for the top hand and three for the bottom hand-so do I keep the ring finger on the top hand down or the pointer finger of the bottom hand? Or maybe I am holding my flute incorrectly 😂

Thank you for this video. I think I am going to look for a piece of river cane and make one for myself. I have a question. I believe I saw onetime some artifacts that used a wrap of leather or bark in place of the bird. I have just spent an hour online looking for this, but came up with nothing. I think it was an eastern woodland style flute. Did you ever hear or see this type of flute? Thank you.
@ClintGoss5 ай бұрын
Yes, some of the early flutes used bark for spacers, and also for the bird. It may have been that the bird began by folks wanting to use their hand for other things than directing the airstream.

Love this scale, thanks so much for sharing. On an historical note, Sefardi people are Jewish, originally from Spain and nowadays living in Greece and Turkey, but not necessarily gypsies. Actually probably not gypsies at all.

We can not begin to appreciate the history of this land by calling the people that lived here by a country across the world in Asia. They are natives, here first. Not calling them natives never gives them the credit for who they have been...or maybe that has been the plan.

Thank you for this. I too have been asked not to sing as a child by my parents, as a student in music class (transferred to shops), as an adult by my children. When alone I think I sing just fine. I will use your method using my flute to self teach me to sing and stay on note. Who knows I may become famous. I will proudly say I followed the Clint Goss technique. People will admire my singing voice and perhaps ask me not to hum into my flute.

Coming from a Western Music background, I also had a mountain to climb to improvise. I started by making it a head-game about chord progressions and playing the "right" key notes. The flute (and those who gather around it) gradually taught me to relax, play, enjoy, and *listen* for the sounds I like. Playing with lots of backing tracks at home *really* helped me play with others. I found playing with others is *much* easier than backing tracks because I could see the other musicians move to the beat and change their body positions when a change in the music was happening ... Flute On!
