I have found the best way to release the roots from dirt is to put it in a tub of water and carefully massage them. It is much easier on the plant and the dirt releases much easier.

The latin binomial should inform you as to why your water props failed. Euphorbia pulcherrima. They're a thin, flat-leaved succulent. Most of them die after Christmas from overwatering. They're more closely related to Tanzanian zipper plants than they are to pothos or other houseplants. So use the same kind of gritty soil that you would use for echeveria or cactus, let the cuts callus over for a day, and then plant them in dry gritty soil and wait 3 days to water them. They should have enough root stubs to take in a little bit of water. Don't water them again until they tell you (drooping).

This will work just fine and most people will have no issues, but best practice is to sterilize the pruners with rubbing alcohol prior to use and always put the rooting hormone (not always necessary) in a separate small container before dipping so as not to contaminate the original container with any disease that may or may not be visible in the mother plant at the time of taking the cutting.

I've heard people say not to push the cutting all the way down, because water might pool at the bottom of the soil and cause root rot. What has been your experience?
@backyardnursery7008
@backyardnursery7008 4 ай бұрын
Water pooling does drown the plant and cause rot. Rot is my number one nemesis for any propagation. However, it seems to me that lack of drainage and too much water in the dirt is more the problem than depth. I do also ensure a node or two are above the soil level. Let me know if this helps or if there is more to discuss. Thanks!

It’s hard for me to say, definitively, that it is a sand cherry and will regrow, but theoretically yes. As long as there are living roots you can regrow a tree. It seems possible it could also be a seedling.

I do the air layering method where I just take a lower branch, strip some leaves and bury it 5-6” and forget about it for a few months. Once rooted I cut from the mother plant and transplant. I have done your method with a variety of other plants. For me the latter method is easier because I don’t need that many plants or supplies and I don’t have to worry about them if I go on vacation.

Sure thing. Transplanting is the “easy” part. Now that they have roots, it’s as simple as putting them in quality soil (I like making a homemade mix), and keeping things just the right amount of moist.
@backyardnursery7008

Sorry I might have missed it. Do you cover the cuttings to keep moisture in or feed / water from the bottom with the top off?
@backyardnursery7008
@backyardnursery7008 6 ай бұрын
Yes I do! That’s an important part and sometimes a tricky part. The humidity helps, but then also creates a chance for mold…and then you need to acclimate the cuttings to “full air” once they’re rooted. So try to open the dome periodically to let some fresh air it…and when transitioning out of the dome once it is rooted, it’s about increasing the fresh air time each day for several days

Howdy Neighbor! Last year I cut the stems above the tuber when the vines were around 6-8 inches. Some I transplanted to a small container to root before transplanting, others I cut and transplanted directly (just poke the shoot into soil). 8 in total, all rooted well. You want to plant outside after evening temperatures stay above 55 degrees. So right around June 1, for us near Philly, take a look at the 10 day forecast. Don’t forget the weather could be off by a few degrees, so plant when the coast is clear of 55 at night for sure.
