This might be a bit silly question but do you have any idea how much the netting weighs overall? I'm just trying to compare it to the sea to summit pyramid net.

Oops. Those last few minutes talking about the subscription and service plans only to have it all be inaccurate already with Garmin having now killed its Freedom plans and transitioning to a new subscription model with adjusted costs and message limits.

I don’t get the “deal with the condensation issues” while paying $700 for a tent. Don’t know why no one has made a DCF double wall shelter yet.

This is probably the last new InReach device for private consumers. Starlink just launched a more mobile device, that will cover 80 % of the backpacking market, offering real internet - not something for UL at the moment, but it will for sure getting lighter. On the other hand, (emergency) satellite messaging is getting to more people on iPhones and Android. UL hikers will shy away from spending 500 $ for something their iPhone does partialy. In Glacier I heard that it is common practice under CDT hikers, to let the bear spray in its packaging so you can sell it better once your outside of the park.

The Starlink Mini isn't really designed for backpacking use. It's still bukly for backpacking use and If you power it off a 26000 mah battery, it will only last a few hours. That's not a lot of use for the size and weight. I wouldn't worry about the Starlink Mini taking business away from backcountry satellite messaging companies at this point. The future will likely be Starlink or future competitors offering satellite cell service with data services. Cell providers are currently working on this and it will likely replace terrestrial cell phone service in the future.

Do we need this though? Safety aside more connectedness removes us from the moment of being outside.
@MasonClay-t7e12 күн бұрын
From my perspective, removing myself from the moment for the sake of being connected is life sustaining. Sharing a moment with someone who may not nessacairly have the privilege to experience the outdoors like I can makes life worth living. The most beautiful things are shared.

Magnetic closures are a huge deal breaker for me. Had my compass depoled by a gear magnet and I cannot afford to allow this happen again in the wild. Toggle works fine and is more resistant to open in wind. Also #5 zips for a few grams and the win.

Underrated set up: Fleece sleeping bag liner underneath a quilt. Adds warmth, contains the user's movements so as to preserve the quilt seal and prevent draft, keeps the quilt cleaner and it's easier to wash liner than wash quilt.

On my Altaplex - the foot and head ends have tape running across the panels in various angles. Does this mean I can put more pressure on those guidelines without fear of panel distortion?

Very informative. thank you. I use the Versa Flow and got the carbon filter because some streams have warnings about metal contamination from previous mining activities. But it's good to know it will be effective against cyanobacteria toxins.

I've had two Tarptent Sublites (Tyvek), one Rainbow, and an original Bowfin. I still have the Sublite and Bowfin, and the Sublite has been my go-to tent ever since I got the first one. I can't remember when I got the first Sublite, but it was with the first release, before they had a screen door. Shortly after i got the tent, Henry asked me to send it back, and he installed a screen door for free. The first Sublite was destroyed by a racoon on the Lost Coast, and the second one is still going strong. The Bowfin is my "heavy weather" tent, and I carry it in my "Oh Shit!" kit when I row remote lakes.

I used this tent on a few trips this summer. After packing up wet, dirt found its way into the zippers and they both started to fail when i tried to use them under too much tension. Tough to move the lower fastener, then seperating apart. Running the upper zip fastener back and forth helped reconnect it. When I can secure the guylines for the vestibule door and the top of the trekking pole w/ a stake, then i can keep the upper guy line taunt while providing some slack to the lower line (less tension on the zipper). When i couldnt secure the guy lines with stakes (only a few inches of sand over rock slab), i just used large rocks. That kept both lines super taunt and led to the zipper failure. Later at home, i cleaned the zippers with soap, inspected the teeth, and tightened the fastener w/pliers...they are both working nice again, however, i cant use rocks like that again.

Excellent review. I've really been debating between this pack and the significantly heavier Osprey EXOS 48. I was willing to pay the price of another pound and a half for the perception of much greater comfort. But you've persuaded me otherwise with the extremely detailed review that you gave, and breakdown of the equipment. Thank you.

Just stumbled upon your channel after countless reviews as I have been in the market for a new wilderness home for some months now. Your review nailed down my choice of the Unbound 2P as I was about sold on it, but as it's a fair piece of change I wanted to be sure. The features you covered locked me down, especially being able to pitch right to ground, if necessary. I have been in storms for sure where it would have definitely been more than necessary lol. Thanks for your excellent content and your over the top teaching skills! Had to subscribe due to this single video.

Ryan, I wish you would put all BPL video content on KZbin. As an unlimited member, I really struggle with the Vimeo video platform, whereas watching on KZbin is a breeze. I know there is a paywall option for content creators. Please consider. Your videos are great but trying to use Vimeo on the webpage on my phone is truly awful.

6:59 Maybe not "dramatic" injection of nutrients, but what about from backcountry campers and their catholes? That lake basin is a catchment for all the hikers that travel through there. Yosemite backpackers, PCT'ers or otherwise... anyone in the last 100 years or so who wanted to climb a mountain and decided to poop on it. I appreciate your practical solutions and overall discussion on this topic.

Very curious about the impact of human waste in the back country on cyanobacteria, but that part of the Sierra has active cattle and sheep grazing leases that have been grandfathered in for generations. With herds in the thousands going through in the warm months, it's hard to imagine human waste having a comparable impact. It should be noted that the basin he singled out is on the Hoover and Inyo side of the crest divide and would not be a catchment for PCT or Yosemite hiker waste.
