Backpacking Light & Tenkara Fishing!

I love bringing my tenkara while backpacking. So much fun. I've got my setup dialed lately... 20 lb pack weight with everything except water, including food and fishing gear. The peace and joy from catching mountain trout on tenkara is hard to beat.

Love the family story, this is exactly what I'm trying to do with my 3 oldest boys this year. Going to look at the master class now 👍

I use an ultralight rod and reel accompanied by my tiny tackle box when backpacking. My setup of these three items weighs 1.4 pounds. That’s the weight I go with on long distance hikes. I could make it lighter if I was on a two or three day trip. I can use flies, spinners, floats, worms etc. My rod collapses to about 15”.

What's interesting is that tenkara usually seems to be a gateway to fishing for backpackers. For me, tenkara is a gateway to outdoors and backpacking.

I catch way more fish than all my buddies, flippin' with my 7' cane pole that I bought for 50 cents at a yard sale 😅
