Oops. Those last few minutes talking about the subscription and service plans only to have it all be inaccurate already with Garmin having now killed its Freedom plans and transitioning to a new subscription model with adjusted costs and message limits.

This is probably the last new InReach device for private consumers. Starlink just launched a more mobile device, that will cover 80 % of the backpacking market, offering real internet - not something for UL at the moment, but it will for sure getting lighter. On the other hand, (emergency) satellite messaging is getting to more people on iPhones and Android. UL hikers will shy away from spending 500 $ for something their iPhone does partialy. In Glacier I heard that it is common practice under CDT hikers, to let the bear spray in its packaging so you can sell it better once your outside of the park.

The Starlink Mini isn't really designed for backpacking use. It's still bukly for backpacking use and If you power it off a 26000 mah battery, it will only last a few hours. That's not a lot of use for the size and weight. I wouldn't worry about the Starlink Mini taking business away from backcountry satellite messaging companies at this point. The future will likely be Starlink or future competitors offering satellite cell service with data services. Cell providers are currently working on this and it will likely replace terrestrial cell phone service in the future.

From my perspective, removing myself from the moment for the sake of being connected is life sustaining. Sharing a moment with someone who may not nessacairly have the privilege to experience the outdoors like I can makes life worth living. The most beautiful things are shared.
