This is very timely! I recently tried to grind my own and failed miserably. The sides were very difficult for me to do. I am going to have to get some more jinhao nibs to practice on. In the plus side, I have some home made stubs now tho. Keep up the great work! Best, -Luis

I used nylon-jaw parallel-action pliers, and the bent part of the nib had the tines separate a bit so I don't get good ink flow. I've had trouble closing the gap -- any tips for that? or ideas what I might've done wrong with the bend?
@penslothnibs16042 ай бұрын
You can tell me if I'm imagining this wrong. The tines are making a V shape, right? Starting from there, you may be able to squeeze them back together, but that might not work. I'll get to that in a minute. Here's why the bend screwed up. Nylon jaw pliers still allow for curvature and movement of hard metals. When you made the bend, the nylon didn't hold the tines in place, but let them move. There's your V. To correct the V, you're fighting against the curvature of the whole nib which could force the slit behind the bend downward. If that happens, there's nothing to be done. If you haven't guessed, I've made this mistake before.
@forgotMyUsername1002 ай бұрын
@@penslothnibs1604 thanks for the reply! I got nylon to avoid marking, but now that you explain it, sure makes a lot of sense. I'll get a steel-jaw pair before trying my next fude :)

Would it be possible to form the slot by using a sacrificial feed and collar to hold the nib in place, and sawing outwards from the breather whole with a jeweler’s saw? It looks like a 6/0 blade is 7 thou thick, would that be too wide of a slit?
@penslothnibs16044 ай бұрын
@@tstthomason A 6/0 is too thick, but an 8/0 is just about right. In my experience, 8/0 blades snap easily on steel. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. You might discover something amazing.

@@penslothnibs1604 maybe I’ll try it out sometime! Have you ever heard of people experimenting with brass for nibs? I’m a band instrument repair tech, and I have a lot of thin sheets of brass around, and tools to shape and work them. Regardless of the pliers used, wont the ball get more pressure applied vs the surface leading to the ball? I mean, it's going to get neutered anyway. I'm going to give this a shot, I have a few junk nibs and I'd like to try this out for sketching. Cheers for the assist.

Ideally, what you're going for is equal pressure. Take the ball down to flat on both sides and that removes some of the danger.

Would this be the same machine that nibmeisters fix stress cracks in nibs? Also retipping nibs?
@jamescrawford8120 Жыл бұрын
You can use this machine to fix stress cracks, but a laser welder is much better. You can use it for retipping, but requires multiple welds to accomplish it. Real tip welders are capacitive discharge type and make the connection with one touch.
