I'm not of state pension age but energy is that expensive I have no heating, no hot running water, shower once a week, restrict TV to 5 hours an evening and have candles for illumination. There's really not much joy in life, it's simply an existence.

Pro tips save on gas by using hot water bottle under the blanket when your tiny bit cold with extra blanket on top of that. Also save on electric by showering 1 less day a week if u shower daily. Also cook all your meals for the day in 1 cook rather then 3 ( 1 day instead of over 3 days for exmaple ) if you cook for kids and youself do your meals the same as them and eat when they eat. If you love baths have a bath 3/4 fall instead of 95% fall. Use 1/4 less on products like washing your lquid or shampoo n such to make it last extra week or 2. stick to drinking just water instead of juices or alcohol or tea and such. Use candles as lights when reading or doing art or in the bath. Turn the light of when you use laptop or tv or phone. Turn the heating on when it dark only or when your not under blankets and pjs or in the hot bath / shower. All ways to cut cost from pennys to £1 a day depending on how you use them / how meany things u use. It sucks but maybe find some joy in it. Set your self a challenges. This month I’ll save £10 next month £5 then month after £50 and so on. Ps some gym memberships where you can shower and charge phones might be handy if it in walking distance and work out cheaper then your bill for showering / bath use per month. If you drink or smoke then quit and find something free or cheaper to replace it with and so on. If you can shop in multi places to buy food then do it. Set a shop for set things. Or only buy your favourite foods when on sale / offer and bulk ya meals out with frozen veg instead of like chicken for example and so on.

My grandson more or less in the same boat, works but after paying rent, bills nothing hardly left. Every other week when I can afford it I take groceries round to help out, sometimes I don’t shop for myself because I worry so much about him. At the age of 18 he had is colon removed and repeatedly back and forwards in hospital because of cancer which is hereditary on his mothers side. His grandfather died in his 40s and his great grandfather died at the ripe old age of 22 all with the same conditions. He’s taken a driving job for a supermarket doing 30 hrs and now in his 20s he looks constantly unwell.

She said you can’t get a decent pair of kids trainers for less than £200?? Sorry but that’s absolutely not true! Tkmaxx sells brands like Puma or adidas for about £30 - £40, they last a very long time as I buy those for myself and family. Definitely could cost you up to £200 if you want the latest Nike trainers from the big sports shops etc! They’d save a lot if they stopped vaping, getting fillers etc. Honestly that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg, I’d like to see their homes and phone plans etc. I’m not trying to judge but I sadly know people around my own town who claim destitution and they have the latest phones, cigarettes or vape, nights out etc! I myself am classed as low income but I’m managing just fine but I have my priorities in order.
