I like how the movie made you guess whether it was caused by drugs or a virus. I also liked how becoming a zombie was a slow transition and it showed their confusion.

I just watched this film last night. I was satisfied with everything except the foot scene (gross) and the killer reveal. It was a very tact motivation that didn’t need the other 80 minutes of film. I would have loved if it was husband/wife duo at work. That being said, Peter’s death was freakin awesome

Singapore Sling is such a weird movie. It's shot beautifully. There are comedic elements that are really quite funny in a Coen brothers way. It's well acted. And it's near Salo level gross.

Love the Vourdoalak I found this one very creepy. also comparing to two past vourdoak movies I watched namely the Vourdalak segment of the Mario Bava horror anthology Black Sabbath and Night of the Devils 1972, the latest Vourdolak film stand up strong vs. 2 movies.

Nice haul, I'm jealous. The coolest thing I got was Santo El Enmascarado De Plata or The Silver Masked 8 Movie English Language Boxset. For those that don't know its masked Mexican wrestlers especially the most popular one El Santo battling monsters, demons, vampires, gangsters, etc. It satisfies my love of horror and pro wrestling. I have The Great Alligator and enjoyed because I love Sergio Martino and Jaws rip off movies. I also have Bloodmoon its very interesting! I also can't wait to see what you get for Vinegar Syndrome subscription week.

Great list (and good year by VS!). I had the exact same opinion about Phase 4 as you, art is great and the movie itself, with all the extra material, etc. makes this one of my favourite from the VS catalogue overall. I had less time than ever to watch VS releases this year but from the ones I have seen, my top 5 would be: 5. Going South (This is more so my love for ealy Nicholson that is lifting it up so high) 4. The Instructor (Karate, action, car chase, everything you want from this type of film) 3. Lady Reporter (Rothrock is a treasure) 2. Little Darlings (probably the "Best" film they release this year) 1. Phase 4 (on top of everything you said, the close-up photography of the ants and the Saul Bass aesthetic makes this a must own) Curious what your bottom would be because "Bloodbath at the House of Death" is hands down the worst for me this year. Probably in my top 5-10 worst VS .

So I’m very late to the party here but I just saw the movie and was looking for a review. EXCELLENT review… however: My take on the suicide of the leader of the organization is that she heard that the afterlife is amazing and wanted to go as soon as possible. Much different than your take. My take reminds me of what is actually spoken in the 2017 movie The Discovery: “scientist, played by Redford, discovers evidence of an afterlife, which leads to a surge in suicides.”

Great list Carlin! So far this year, I have seen 28 horror or horror adjacent films (Still have The Substance and First Omen on my to watch list so they will not feature on my list yet). Overall, this has really been a great year for horror. Very few new movies that I didn't enjoy on some level. My tops for the year would be as follows: 1. Heretic for the same reasons you gave. So well done on all fronts and just a power house of a film 2. Strange Darling. Loved this movie. Went in blind and it blew me away. the performances by Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald were just top tier. 3. Longlegs. I loved this. I get why others didn't but I thought it was awesome. Cage was so creepy in this role. 4. Late Night with the Devil. Loved it. Wish the art controversy had been avoided but I can't deny what a good time i had watching the film. 5. Godzilla Minus One. I have never cried during a Godzilla film before and this one had me sobbing. 6. Cuckoo. Such a strange, engaging film. 7. Oddity. Such a great film. Oozes atmosphere from start to finish. 8. Smile 2. I was not a big fan of the first one but the sequel was amazing. Was not expecting to love this as much as I did. 9. Alien Romulus. Loved it. a nice return to form for the franchise. Gave it 5 stars. 10. Abigail. It's hard with this one because I had a great time even if they gave everything away in the trailers. Could have had a better ending but I loved it. 11. Trap. Should this be here? Probably not, but I had a blast with how over the top and convoluted this one was. Josh Hartnett was just so much fun to watch. 12. Maxxine. Not as strong of an ending to the trilogy as I would like but it was a pretty good time. 13. In a Violent Nature. I know this one has been somewhat divisive (at least amongst my friend group) but other than a bit of a fumble at the end, i really enjoyed this one. I'll leave my list at 13 cause I like that for my list. Here is hoping 2025 continues the high quality horror train that 2024 blessed us with. Happy New Carlin!
@CarlinCook8 күн бұрын
Nice list. I didn't see Trap because not many people seemed to like it, but now I'm intrigued. We have pretty different taste, but some nice overlap. I love hearing what other people put as their top films.
@therosebride8 күн бұрын
@CarlinCook Trap was just silly good fun. The plot is absolutely ludicrous but Harnett is a treat. I get why people didn't like it, but I was laughing a lot and seeing Haley Mills in a movie again made me smile a lot

Yes, excellent movie! On my top 5. I saw a review of the movie from 2 Mormons and they loved it! Because it shows the 2 girls to be very smart people even though they are young. I love that the end can be seen in so many different ways. I want to think it ended semi happy and Payton survived but I see that it could also go the other way. I’m still checking out reviews trying to explain the end. I love a movie I keep thinking about after it’s over. I’m also not a religious person. I really enjoyed it anyway.
@CarlinCook8 күн бұрын
They did a good job of walking a fine line that doesn't belittle different points of view, which a tough thing to do. My interpretation of the ending was that seeing the butterfly and then not was the filmmakers saying it's your choice if you want to believe that her faith saved her or not.
@brotherofiam5 күн бұрын
To understand the metaphor of the ending it is necessary to finish the book. That was a clue dropped by Mr. Reed in the monopoly scene.

I created a list of movies to watch based on this video. I’m definitely watching Heretic soon. Of course I loved Strange Darling, a movie you weren’t too keen on. Strange Darling is probably #1 on my list. I also loved the movie STREAM, a movie which was so good, but I don’t hear a lot of people talking about. I didn’t like Longlegs or Red Rooms, which is on most top 10 lists. Ok. I’m about to dig in and watch some of the movies on your list! I’ll report back.
