You know how Sean McVay gets The Most out of almost all his players but (felt he) couldn't do so with Goff & how people conflate winning with QB greatness? When trying to figure out wtf is going on in PIT you have to separate things out. Tomlin is a people _person!_ This makes his players want to like him. But he's no leader at all. His coaches walk all over him secure that nothing they do will get them fired & this is why diva players turn it up 12 billion % when there. Without an alpha male in the group, everyone becomes a 12-year-old who doesn't comprehend what's over the line. They keep drafting high level o-line talent & the o-line gets worse. He didn't fire Matt Canada when we all saw & heard him say that their offense was *incapable of mounting comeback wins **_after they had done so 4 times already_* nor will he firs the o-line coach who already has a history of making his o-lines progressively worse. *_IS_*_ he_ worried about how people think of him too much? Maybe. But none of this _really_ matters. He's a counsellor, not a leader.

@@putmeincoachpod2024 No one wants to work for Jerry Jones or Dave Tepper. Or so they think. Sadly, when not held accountable by anyone, most people just lose all their incentive. Doing the task well isn't enough on its own. Within those two extremes you have every aspect of humanity. There have been & always will be coaches who get jealous of their players. Who's that flashy kicker who is great but no NFL team will interview him because he makes videos & gets attention? How tf is that more important than winning games? Everyone seems to have forgotten that the Only Reason last year's S-B went into OT at all was one missed extra point. _That's_ how close S-F came to winning it. I focus on this stuff because it determines much. Sometimes it hampers a team's chances, others it removes them. That article about Sean McDermott no one is being sued for libel over? Yeah, it paints a portrait of a man who would rather lose doing everything His Way than win. He can't stand the pressures of winning. *He* & not Dorsey calls the plays that force Allen to play hero-ball. If it were Dorsey, then those plays would have ceased when he was fired. They only reduced in frequency somewhat. This indicates that people in the Bills organization have figured out some way to reduce this but not end it entirely. I don't know if it's the new OC who acts more like his boss than the reverse - I've seen stuff like this play out in the workplace where the boss likes it when others take charge, or what, but either way they haven't fully stopped this. Now they've gotten rid of their One Deep Threat. Was this part of the intervention to try to stop this habit of his? & have they shot themselves in the foot removing all their deep threats just to stop this? Allen still has an arm. But does he no longer have viable targets?

the one thing i do disagre with is that mac wasnt the main cause of our problems. he most definetly was. He by himself threw away three to four winnable games with inexcusable plays. cant make decisions under pressure, would fall on his behind at the first sight of a defender instead of trying to break it open and save the play. he was very toxic too even if it wasnt intentional. brought a lot of negativity. instead of trying to learn and get better he was always looking sorry for himself. not to mention how cringy/corny the dude was. if we had another just average qb who knew what plays to make and when we woulda won 7-8 games. the defense is really good, the o-line is bottom 5 in the league, but other than that theres a lot of reason for optimism. still need a wr1 but the young guys can definetly hold it down for now if bourne comes back to his pre injury last year form. theres no way its the worst team/roster in the league. A _LOT_ of new GMs & coaches come in & shed off the previous QBs like the Commanders getting rid of Brissett as well as Howell. What I think we're seeing with Tua (& Dan Jones) is the opposite: someone in ownership & possibly Mike McDaniel as well insisting that they didn't make a mistake choosing Tua. People develop mindsets all the time, fixed notions, OCD habits. Once we make a mistake especially one we're stuck with, we work hard to justify it to ourselves. With the Dolphins, what choices do they really have? Can they get a better QB now? Nope. But picking Tua over Herbert in the first place is close to the Browns picking Baker over Lamar. Sure, Baker out-did himself at first. But that's my point; That _WAS_ his ceiling. Can you imagine Lamar having been with _that_ roster the last few years?

@@putmeincoachpod2024 I tend to run off at the mouth in an attempt to be complete, but usually fail. Look how well Skyler Thompson didn't play in lieu of Tua. Or even Michael White in the preseason. So okay, he's _WAY_ better than them. & I'm done. I _like_ Tua but the practical coach in me says this roster carries him & not the other way 'round. But trying to find some proper example or analogy is hard. If I were to say "imagine him on the Saints" would that be with McDaniel calling plays? We either can or can't assess QB talent individually from roster & play-calling. Only I find that most people can't do this _consistently_ at all. I just saw a video that spoke of the _FACT_ that twice in '21 Fields' coaches shouted "snap the ball now" to him thinking there were 12 men on the field when there weren't, leading to INTs both times. More fodder for my "everything negative I've ever heard about fields is a lie" campaign. Tua is clearly limited. It's another case of the wrong fit like Herbert going to waste on the Chargers, McDermott & not Daboll in Buffalo or Fields in CHI.

Okay, you guys do this thing too much where you blame QBs for the play-calling. In LV we _saw_ WRs run into each other. In N.O. We _saw_ Carr yell at his receivers, correct what we can only assume were bad routes & then the offense clicked in the last 3 games. Which of these are on Carr? Did you not listen to what Raiders players said about Josh McD when given permission to speak freely? "They" didn't release Carr, McD ousted him & Carr waved his no trade clause in their faces leaving them little choice. Yes, it was bad for the *Saints* to pay him that $. Do you think the Vikings wouldn't take him for Sam Darnold right now, that he'd check it down if he had Justin Jefferson to throw to? It's not like if the play-caller calls bad routes for the 4 receivers on a play the QB can throw to one of the other 8. He has to choose from the only ones there. & you went straight from knowing Pete Carmichael sucked to saying Carr threw check-downs. Want to show me plays where Carr had open receivers elsewhere those times? Or is this simply an assumption? Look at these kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3rNmKx8fcmJjNU Kellen Moore plays as a perfect example. It explains how Dak led in INTs despite missing 5 games in '22. Is there another set of receivers for the QBs to throw to?

@@putmeincoachpod2024 Hey, I'm not saying he's top-20. & he *definitely* under-performs based on what we know he can do. But if he had to teach the receivers how to run routes well *on the field during a game* that should tell us something. Another example is Waldron in Seattle. He witnessed Canales' play-calling _first-hand_ & Geno was 4th lowest in off-target throws last season. So we know the down-turn wasn't him. Yet wqith the additions of JSN, Bobo & Charbonnet basically doubling his WR & adding to his RB room he accomplished less & locked JSN into a role everyone else knew was ill-suited for him. So yeah, 100% on the play-calling. We mention it. But everyone seems to regress to thinking the QB in real life is like the one in a video game & everyone else are NPCs, coaches included. Brady didn't call plays. Rodgers still doesn't. It's nearly impossible for a QB to be able to study the opposing offense while ducking sacks & looking for open receivers. Which makes me wonder: why are we accepting the narrative that *Lamar* is responsible for losing against the Chiefs? The supporting coaches who were supposed to be watching out for him _openly said that_ they called RPOs *forcing Lamar to have to make all decisions* & removed themselves from everything. Name me a single other QB ever asked to do that let alone in the playoff against the Chiefs? They didn't liberate him to be the great QB he always wanted to be, they hung him out to dry removing all support. They set him up to fail. Again. I dunno. It's another area where I'm not like the rest of humanity. I never for a second think the play-calls are the QB's fault.

Yo, guys: I haven't been here in a while so I clicked the playlist & let it run. I'm actually listening to your takes on the Giants as I'm writing this. See, in that one, Andy makes the point that Kayvon Thibodeaux (parlez-vous français?) got 6 sacks against the Commanders & Jets. Here you're talking about Russ having had a decent season in '23 as if saying Only Hackett made him bad. Not the right context. Russ threw behind the line of scrimmage 23.7% of the time last season. He _has_ an RB (Perine) placed there on every pass play as a safety valve. But NONE of those passes BtLOS were called for *especially* on 3rd & long which was most often created by Russ doing this on 1st or 2nd downs. Perine was there for when Russ can't scramble to where he can see the field. With Russ, inability to scramble means inability to see the field. 23.7% of the time he can't see the field? His TDs came mostly on TOs created by the defense giving them short fields. But when you can't see the field 23.7% of the time, work out how many 1st downs one needs on average to get withing scoring distance from one's own 20. He's going to set up 3rd & long At Least Once & I'm willing to bet that his % of passes _on_ 3rd & long that went BtLOS (because defenses know it's a pass) is higher. He could sustain No Drives.

Bridgewater, Winston & Brees, 3 QBs he elevated more than any NFL coach did with any other QB. Russ was his kryptonite. & Hackett... The problem is NFL team owners do Not Know what makes good NFL anythings. & when they eff up with a hire like that they usually double down because the alternative is to hire someone possibly worse? If they got this garbage because they don't know what they're doing, the potential to do worse always looms possible. Fun stuff. Honestly I don’t see the Vikings finishing better than 3rd in the division. I really don’t. If they couldn’t get it done with Kirk, they won’t with Darnold. The Lions have arrived and the Packers are right behind them. This division is tougher than it’s been in decades.

Mahomes also had a team that lead the league in dropped passes, had a tackle who led the league in penalties, and had an overall bad offense. Take that into account. Goff had Amon Ra, a 2 headed monster at running back, a rookie tight end who went off, a solid offensive line, and an amazing defense.

Funny you guys brought up Rice, Moss, and Odell. What made those 3 so great is exactly what I think makes Jefferson so good. Their ball tracking skills are just incredible. When the QB initially releases the ball, they can just tell exactly where they need to be in order to make the catch. If they aren’t open, they can manipulate defenders while the ball is still in the air to make themselves open before the ball reaches them. That trait is extremely difficult to teach so it’s always special when you get a “once a decade” player who can do it so flawlessly and effortlessly. It’s like these guys already mossed the defenders before even going up for the catch. And then combine that overpowered skill with JJ’s hands and leaping ability for the more difficult catches and it’s over. That dude also makes some of the most ridiculous contested catches I’ve ever seen. He’s like if Deandre Hopkins had the speed, route running, and ball tracking of Odell. You don’t average 100 receiving yards per game on accident

Completely agree. He's just a monster. As a Lions fan I'd love to see him leave the division, but just as a fan of football I really hope Darnold and or McCarthy can work out because I love this kids game, and he needs a good QB to really elevate him to that all time status.

I’m Gen X and remember watching Bill Munson and Eric Hipple playing QB for the Lions. Felt sorry for those guys. Point is, the coaching and culture of a team absolutely matter. People say Stafford quit on the Lions because he went to LA, but Megatron and Barry both quit too: the three best players the team had in our lifetimes quit primarily because of the culture. It’s been so hard to watch the past 40 years for me, even as someone who’s not a Lions fan. We can say Stafford failed in big moments as a Lion, but with that culture and that overall level of coaching, who honestly could’ve done better, and lasted over a decade as Stafford did? Also, there was no shame in the Rams losing by a point in the wild card game last year. The Rams deserved to be underdogs and messed up the spread losing by just one point. So even though Stafford didn’t lead his team to a win in his most-recent playoff game, he threw for almost 370 yards and the Rams outperformed under his leadership on the field. I guess I’m saying that Stafford has always been _that guy_ - and Holmes, Campbell, Sheila, etc. have completed the greatest cultural shift, as far as I’m concerned, in NFL history (I can appreciate this as an LA native having watched the Clippers struggle to do the same for so long in the NBA). I’m truly glad to see both Stafford and the Lions succeed. Also, agree re: Kelly Stafford. Has she always been this loose lipped?
@putmeincoachpod2024
@putmeincoachpod2024 24 күн бұрын
It’s been a LONG 40 years for Lions fans. I think you’re on the money about the legendary players who gave up on the team. Player mobility wasn’t what it is today and ownership really failed this franchise for decades. There’s never been a point in playing for anything beyond a second contract. Stafford tried like hell. He did the best he could, but ultimately he had to leave to become a winner. I’m happy with Goff and where the team is now, and the Rams won a ring, so it’s all good at this point. And to answer your question: Kelly has always been obnoxious, her voice is just more amplified since Matt’s brand has grown in LA. Thanks again for tuning in 🙏

Rams fan here. Good stuff, guys! And just think: even with the departure of Raheem Morris, Chris Shula, who coached the LB’s and pass rush for the Rams last year, stayed and has been elevated to DC. So the same guy who was most responsible for turning last year’s rookies Kobie Turner and Byron Young into first-year stars is still there to work magic with Jared Verse and Braden Fiske. Niners fans and casuals are taking the Niners as the chalk in the NFC West, but you see the “vibes” and continuing momentum of the Rams rebuild clearly - whereas the Niners have been at redline for several years now trying to win a Super Bowl but falling short. If you’re so inclined, as Lions fans, would love a follow-up from you regarding how you project Jonah Jackson and Jerry Jacobs will fit in with the Rams. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for much for watching! You guys have been building such a sneaky good defense. I was mad I didn’t mention Kobie after we recorded. I just really loved these draft picks and wanted to shed light on them but that DLine is gonna be a PROBLEM moving forward if even one of these guys hits. *I think they both will* As for Jonah and Jerry. Jonah is very good, he’s just injury prone. If he plays a whole season I’ll be floored, he missed the NFCCG and frankly I think it really hurt us down the stretch (among other obvious things in that game) but if he can play 13-15 games he will be a stud. Jerry is terrible. I’m sorry, he just is. He is not an NFL db. If you have him in there on rotations he can be a body, but if you need him to play any serious minutes it’s a bad sign for your secondary as a whole.

@@putmeincoachpod2024 - Thanks for the reply! Fortunately Jerry Jacobs was an emergency pick-up due to the injury to Derion Kendrick and the Rams have other options at CB. (Will be interesting to see how both the Rams’ and Lions’ secondaries perform this year.) As for Jonah Jackson, if he goes down, I suppose the Rams could always slide Steve Avila back to guard where he played great year 1 and see if rookie Beaux Limmer is another patented Rams late-round steal, at center. OK, you guys have earned a sub: most sports KZbinrs don’t engage with viewers to this degree of thoroughness. Truly appreciated. Looking forward to game 1 of the regular season!

I think it will be interesting to see what Devon Achane can do with a full workload and with two major losses to that O-line. It seems like he’s been bulking up for that very reason.
