I worked on the Deep Sea Fishing Trawlers out of Fleetwood back in the early 1970’s …. It was a good job … better than sitting on your arse collecting dole money …. I was on the Marretta on of the J.Marr & sons trawlers … unfortunately our fishing industry was decimated later in the 70’s as Iceland got their 500 mile exclusion zone ….

excellent pics and songs that evoke emotions long forgotten of a life i loved in fleetwood, the people the town even the smell of issac spencers wafting across the docks on a frosty morning in the playground at chaucer school, all the brave men young and old who lived and died on trawlers, my great grandad was the skipper of the trawler doris that was lost with all hands in the minches early last centuary, his son my grandad the kindest man ive ever known a skipper at 21 spending his life at sea on the red boats i think from the iago steam trawler company, my nan lucy who i believe was the only woman to go on a full trip from fleetwood, the crew must have had there rabbits foot with them as it was known to be bad luck taking a woman to sea on a trawler, so many memories of what was then a wonderful place to live and grow up with wonderful people.

January 1914 Place sunk Western Hebrides Casualties January 1914 - William Wright (skipper), John Talbot (mate), Matthew Wood (bosun), John Stephenson (chief engineer), William Croft (2nd engineer), Levi Leake (trimmer), Arthur Stephenson (trimmer), Robert William Chiffins (deckhand), William Jones (deckhand), George Nicholson (cook) General notes DORIS (FD141) came to Fleetwood as a newly built vessel for Rossall Steam Fishing Co Ltd. She was named after Miss Doris Dickinson, daughter of a former port missionary at Fleetwood who was at that time managing director of the Rossall Company. The trawler left Fleetwood on Wednesday 21st January 1914 with a crew of ten men. She foundered off the Scottish coast and wreckage from the ship (part of the wheelhouse, a lifeboat bearing her port number, and some deck fittings) was found floating off the island of Skye. The body of the cook was also found.

One night I dreamt a dream inside a dream. I dreamt I was on a fish boat. I woke from that dream and was happy it was only a dream. Then I woke from that dream to discover I was actually on a #@*% fish boat. I was in a foul mood all that day. But I hold wonderful memories of my time. I got out because of the ever increasing government regulation. Mostly written by no-nothing politicians pandering to emotion-driven econazis. Like farmers and ranchers, the fisher who actually produces gets screwed the most. Ya have to just put your head down and go to sea. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video …. It takes me back to the early 1970’s …. I was a Deckie Learner on the Maretta on of J. Marr & Sons Deep Sea (Icelandic) Trawlers out of Fleetwood (Lancashire) …. Iceland had just won the 3rd Cod War … I was out of a job and the fishing industry was decimated practically overnight …. There’s not much left now at Fleetwood Dock … the old Ice House is the only thing still going … producing ice for domestic consumption via the supermarkets …. Oh yes there’s also a practically defunct outlet shopping mall. The only things that Fleetwood is famous for these days is Lofthouse’s Fisherman’s Friends and the football club …. Very sad decline of a once prosperous town.

Hi Allan, watched all of your short history of the trawlers, this is the first one I've seen the Lord Essendon on. I sailed on her in 1958 out of Hull. Hope to see many more in the future

I was on fairtry 2 in 1966 voyage 19 and we destroyed so many young COD it was criminal and our skipper put them all down the hacker for fish meal and put the net back down on the nursery ground to get another 600baskets for the same result fucking pure greed and we were one of 400 factory ships doing this and it was not against the law I’m sorry I was part of it but I was a 16year old boy who did not know any better glad I only did one trip left and joined the merchant navy

I was studying Elec Engg in the Regent Street Polytechnic, London, in 1960-1964.Later it was promoted to become the University of West minister. I had planned to self-finance my stay in Britain by working on Trawlers during my Christmas vacations, and on big vessels during long summer vacations, as I was already a fully qualified Radio Officer from India. The scheme worked beautifully. I sailed as Marconi staff Radio Operator from Hull in December 1960, but for next 3 years I worked with Northern Trawlers. I cherish the sweet memories on those Trawlers with fishermen, fun filled life under tough conditions and had new experience on codfishing in Arctic Sea in total darkness. Later BBC London invited me for a talk on "Deep Sea fishing" which was broadcast live in 1964. My salute to those hardworking fisherman.

The hms Apollo f70 was the ship involved in the collision the f76 was hms mermaid but not involved in the cod war as far as I know

@@allanmckernan7608 cheers. In the thumb for the video it shows F69. I remember the Mermaid hit the Fittleton and she quickly sank. I dont remember ever seeing the mermaid, and I thought the ship in the thumb reminded me of the Abdiel, but she had a pennant number beginning with an A if my memory serves me well. I had a loan draft to Abdiel in 84. Incidentally, I was on a Hull trawler in 75 when the cod war was on. Happy days.
