How did they build the engine room and superstructure before the rest of the ship?
@coastaltransportationcrew2 ай бұрын
The original ship was built in 1963. When she was bought by certain owners in 1985 they decided to keep the engine room and superstructure but get rid of the other 2/3rds of the ship. It was discarded and a new forebody was built and attached to the older section.

Able Seaman. To become an able-seaman you need to have a certain amount of experience at sea, and take a test with the coast guard.

From the early 70's I was enlisted in the Navy then in the Merchant Marine. 25 years at sea so I assumed by now ship maintenance technology has passed me by. Then I saw the use of needle guns, chippers, scrappers, etc. so I would be right at home. Except we didn't have Shop Vacs to clean up. And we always laid down coats of Red Lead as a primer. We used to mix the final coat of paint into the Red Lead so coat after coat the layers of Red Lead got closer to the final color. I guess the newer paints don't need primer.

Do the Merchants still use Osphlo anti rust or is this banned also?...Locker looks good......enough muscle memory to find the tool even when the gen set is down!
@coastaltransportationcrew2 ай бұрын
You could use Ospho. We use a different product for sealing. We do use Ospho for cleaning up rust stains.

Yes. The mast house is a heated space and the mooring lines are stowed so as to dry out.

Free tip: no-one likes the music. Doesn't matter what music, it's always gonna suck. Check your stats, you'll see people fast forward around it. It might sound weird to you but the sound that accompanies the video you're showing is a really important part of the experience. Basically, if your montage is good enough it'll do fine with either literally just the native audio or ADR of the same environment 👊🙏

Back in the past, CTI owned three other vessels that were built in Europe. The old Coastal Sea had been built in Amel, Sweden, and operated in Germany. The Coastal Merchant was built in Husum, Germany. The Coastal Venture (ex-Sunmar Star) was built in Svendborg, Denmark.

It would be nice to see some of the sea animals like the whales 🐳, eagles 🦅, 🎣 etc or crew members picking off the ice from the boat.
@coastaltransportationcrew4 ай бұрын
We’ll see more wildlife in some of the later episodes. On this voyage there was plenty of snow but the vessel did not ice up, so you won’t see any de-icing going on. But the snow does suck and later on you’ll see the crew wrestling with those issues.
