What color smoke? My bet is the cartridge on the turbo is blown (oil or coolant seals are trashed)....

this seems like an opportunity to look into making the jeep midish engine say with the motor between the 2 rear axes so you could have one chain drive the front and a second the rear both coming off a double sprocket (would also give you more legroom up front and more weight over the drive axes
