The wires are listed as "brake controller". I have the factory brake controller so I never looked any more into it. Yea the 5th wire is a green wire behind the third brake light tied to aux 1 switch to be used for auxiliary lighting for plows and such. And thanks! Hopefully I will never be in a situation to need it, but it's one of those things that if you need it, you really need it.

I wonder if the multi flex tail gate has something similar, I honestly have not looked at either tail gate close enough. On another topic I was curious what you found as per accessing that grease zerk on the steering idler arm bracket assembly, if its reasonable to reach behind a skid plate for example and get to it or if its a total pain in the rear as I am only guessing that perhaps the kit that I see Moog as one example makes, might fit ?. Just have not come across anyone talking about this series of truck and how good or bad it is to access as taking off a bash plate etc gets old really fast if that is what it took to access to grease it. You see where I'm going with this, if it was a good mod to do ... video time and making you spend money LOL.
@adventureandrepeat2 күн бұрын
With a long hose it's not that bad to get there. I know the moog kit makes it more convenient but it hasn't been high on my priority list. However the one grease zirc that is a pain to get to is the pitman arm. Tires have to be turned to get access to it with a normal grease fitting
@charlesb42672 күн бұрын
@@adventureandrepeat I found the part number for the Moog kit that seems to be floating around and its older trucks that it lists and I gather from your experience that in more recent years its become easier to reach and not the issue it once was ( which is good, I can well imagine how many of these trucks over the years had that grease point skipped because of its lack of decent access ). But as you point out they still didn't get it figured out with the pitman arm as yes on my older truck I have to turn the tires to the left just a bit to get onto that grease fitting as its a no go with the tires straight or turned the the right some.
@adventureandrepeat2 күн бұрын
Grease zircs aren't that crazy special. They have standard and metric threads, but you can't really tell the difference since they're tapered treads in thin metal. The pitman arm could be solved by putting in a 90 degree zirc. Easy to do, just keep forgetting to do when I have time
@charlesb42672 күн бұрын
@@adventureandrepeat I've only made the assumption that by now they are using all metric on the vehicles but like you said the metric thread that is a 6m x1 vs the 1/4-28 sae look so close in size/diameter ( 0.236 vs 0.250 ) and the pitch ( 25.4 vs the sae at 28 threads per inch ), it looks pretty close. If you do get around to messing with that pitman arm fitting, you will figure out what it is and once that is swapped over to a 90, that will make greasing a lot less of a hassle.
@adventureandrepeat2 күн бұрын
Yea I agree it's probably all metric in these trucks unfortunately. Then I go and ruin it by using standard bolts on all the extra things I mount to the truck haha

I never asked a dealership specifically. But if they can't prove that a battery caused a failure then warranty should still be honored. And if it looks factory when it's done, what tech is gonna go looking to see if it was originally installed
@jitzman17 күн бұрын
What’s the reason for the 175amp fuses at each end of the positive cable? Are 2 fuses necessary?
@adventureandrepeat7 күн бұрын
On the secondary battery it's part of the fuse block. On the primary battery the fuse just facilitates having a stud to hook the battery cable to. Yes in theory you could do it the old fashioned way and just hook up directly to the positive post on the battery on each one and they would be connected and no fuse is really needed. I went the extra steps for a few reasons. It's a brand new truck, so I wanted to keep it looking as factory as possible to avoid warranty issues. I think it looks like a cleaner install utilizing the fuses and blocks on both sides. And then fuses are just for safety, if a battery cable ever got cut or disconnected and shorted out it's not melting a cable or battery post and possibly starting a fire. Because if it is in for warranty work, and another tech doesn't know what they are doing, it can save me a lot of headaches if they accidentally short it out because they disconnected one side and not both.
@charlesb42677 күн бұрын
I had to look back at the video where you installed the second battery and realized you went with the diesel fuse block for a higher amperage tie in. I presume your truck has the one 220 amp alternator due to the plow prep package. So here's my question that you may be able to answer, as per the same idea in tying the two batteries together. Here's the scenario, I had just ordered a truck with the L8T and decided to choose the two alternator setup which also then comes with the two batteries ( 220 amp main with 170 amp that charges the second battery ). I also ordered the truck with the upfitter kit if that makes any difference to the whole picture . But I did not order the plow prep package and the reason for that is I did not want the larger torsion bars due to the stiffer ride, the second battery with the way they intend it is for an RV as you pointed out and so I thought in case I did want a trailer I may as well throw the stuff under the hood the economical way by ordering it all. My question is, what would happen if the two batteries were tied together with the existing parts, is it even possible and would the fuse block/relay or whatever is all with the secondary battery not be capable of dealing with the amperage draw, and would there be an issue with two alternators that would then effectively be tied together charging the same two batteries, if it would confuse the trucks computer or something weird like that.
@adventureandrepeat7 күн бұрын
The way I understand it, it'd be best to leave it the way it is if it's dual battery and dual alternator. Because the second alternator is dedicated to the second battery. The factory uses a relay to combine the batteries when needed. The trucks use smart alternators so they are only putting out when the batteries need it. So I'm assuming the combining relay only activates when the truck wants them to be. If you put a diesel secondary block to bypass it you may throw a code for no relay signal. Not likely will there be charging interference from both alternators charging at the same time but it could lead to them being less efficient. The biggest thing in the plow prep is the relay box that comes with it, so when a plow pump motor runs and then shuts off quickly, it keeps the engine alternators from spiking the voltage, from trying to handle the load, and shutting down the dash systems
@charlesb42677 күн бұрын
@@adventureandrepeat That's interesting about there being a relay that would at times combine the batteries. Since I have never had any decent information on the system, just comments that the second alternator with battery are designed to power a trailers charging needs. So I realize a second battery and turning a second alternator is just more drag and dead weight but with these trucks already being somewhat portly weight wise even with the gas engine, probably doesn't make much of a difference in the scheme of things. One part of me dreads owning a truck like this ( anything modern ) as its a rolling mass of expensive to replace or to diagnose electronics as well as too complicated an engine ( not as bad as some though ! ) as well as the transmission.
@adventureandrepeat7 күн бұрын
There really is not much info out there on the battery system. Even my dealership that was getting parts from wasn't super confident. But I found all this out by trying to do it. Because I bought the full harness and correct relay box. Just to find out it couldn't be done. But I understand the concern for how complicated these trucks can be. That's why there is warranty so you don't have to know! Haha. But the engine is just about the same as when they first released in the half tons in 2014. The 6.6 is just a stroked out 6.2, which has been around a long time. And the transmission may be new, but the service side of it for regular guys isn't much different than it ever was before. Just no dipstick on it like most other vehicles on the road today. In a few years, these trucks will start being apart of the secondary market. So they complexity isn't going away unfortunately and as the years go on, they are only going to get more complex as technology changes. Buying any vehicle new or used is always a gamble

Quick question for you old schools who know more about diesel trucks than I do. I’m looking into buying my first diesel soon and I’ve seen it gets around 18mpg with a 36gal tank. My calculations say I should go at least 600 miles fuel range before hitting empty. But I keep seeing videos where diesel owners fill them up and doesn’t seem to go over 390 fuel range on a full tank.
@adventureandrepeat8 күн бұрын
That calculation is a rolling average of current fuel economy. Because they can get 18, doesn't mean they always will. City driving and idle time really eat away at the average mpg calculations. Which results in such low numbers. Even using the key fob to remote start the truck, before the ignition is fully turned on, eats away at those average numbers. If you watch the fuel range on these trucks enough you can even watch the range go up, while you are driving down the road because of the rolling calculation. With my gas truck I am very consistently around the 500 mile fuel range when I fill my truck and I have a good mix of city and highway driving

That should prove interesting if you do create a complete system that covers all three ventilation hoses. Now how to go about measuring the amount of oil captured could be rather difficult, while weighing the filters before and after would show both water and oil captured. Draining them I assume would only show a portion of what they contain as the filter media would soak up a lot of oil I would tend to think, however they could be cut open and that might tell some of the story. Now as per actually seeing what these L8T engines are building up on their intake valves, I wonder if anyone has dug into them yet with a higher mileage engine to capture video or photo of what is there and relative to other GDI engines on the market.
@adventureandrepeat19 күн бұрын
How much and what they accumulate depends on a lot of different factors. Time of year, humidity, engine loads, oil manufacturers all play a part. Mine always pulls a lot of moisture out along with the oil with the type of filter that I use

So I have a story to see if this is possible. We took our fifthwheel from Maine to Georgia in the spring and got this signal all the way. Now mind you we bought this 2024 in the late summer of 2023. We had a tow behind camper then and got the same signal. Now back to the story. I called everyone, googled and youtubed to see what could be wrong. Why was i getting a brake warning and a check wiring warning. I assumed it was the plug or something and someone said sounded like a ground problem. On our return to maine after a stop for fuel the trailer Ebrake deployed. Well not really, it melted in place. Then the whole wire harness started to melt to the battery. My husband jumped out of the truck turning off the battery, didnt stop it. He quickly got the tool box and cut the battery wire and it stopped the melting smoke show. Could this issue possibly have been the reason for this? Everyone says there is no reason for the camper itself to do this. Then along comes the recall in August. I believe it is too much of a coincidence especially since we did indeed get the brake warning ding ding. Thanks for your help
@adventureandrepeatАй бұрын
To me sounds like 2 different issues that happened at once. Yes, your original problem would have been related to the recall. But as far as the battery melting that's a separate thing. That was caused by a direct short to ground in that harness. The ebrake when pulled just completes a circuit to activate the brakes. That's it. Could it have failed internally and shorted to ground causing it to melt? Very possible. The truck is protected with fuses for everything and in no way carries enough energy to cause that problem, or is even tied into the system that way to cause it either. Good job on him for quickly getting the wires cut and preventing a full on fire!

I just bought a 2500HD a few weeks ago, same model as yours (same color even). If I understood your adjustments correctly, you left 1/2" forward rake on the truck so your front fender measurement after the adjustment was about 41-1/2" (42" at the rear fender less 1/2" for the front)?

@adventureandrepeat3 күн бұрын
Yes it is very possible it needs more turns and that is ok. Duramax is a much heavier engine than the L8T
