Fantastic review, loved how you made it very personal and was quite honest - I am really inspired to get GTX 170 myself however the sea doo GTi SE 170 model would be a dream too.

Love your stuff Nigel. I was 12-14 when my uncle took me aboard the first Wellandoc, a P boat which was a canaler before the Seaway was built. He made me stand watches and do all sorts of chores and out of that experience grew a love for these ladies of the lakes. They have a soul and a heart. Just put your hand on one, close your eyes and you can feel the heart beat. I hate what MRC does. I get it but I don’t have to like it. I moved to Vancouver Island in 2007 after decades of going down to the canal and try to get there as much as I can when we are back east. The last visit got me the CCGS Griffon up bound. Her home port is Prescott ON where the same uncle lived. I was thinking the master’s signal was much the same as the salute when entering and leaving Duluth. One long, two short by the vessel responded to in kind by the bridge keeper. Keep them coming and thanks for what you do.

Hey Nigel. Three long and two short is known as a Master Salute. One long and two short is called a Captains Salute. (I learned this from watching the Duluth Harbor Cam). In Duluth it's done while passing the lift bridge and the bridge will respond back with it's own horn. Could this have been a salute to the bridge?

Thank you Nigel! Perhaps I should re-consider getting condo in that new block beside the harbour - Oh what the heck, I don't sleep at my age so ships horns are always welcome. 😁

Excellent video n great capture of the salute? Horn. I agree with you no matter how many times I see these ships I am still in awe. Hope you are feeling better

Very good video But… don’t ride alone… buy a marine radio that can float and learn to use it Waterproof bag for cell phone I’m not a Pwc person… so probably lots more safety stuff Safe travels

I believe that was a Master salute , sent because of passing the ship.
@John-dm2ik5 күн бұрын
Yes, a master's salute. A normal salute is one long and two short. The master's is three long and two short. I wondered why they would salute a ship that was tied up alongside that likely had no one on the bridge. Maybe the pilot had a friend on the Tadoussac and he was just saying 'Hello'. Or maybe he was just saluting Port Colborne.

Welcome back Nigel , all the years I worked on the canal I found it so cool to be working away on something only to turn around and one of these beauties had slipped into a lock and was three feet away without any noise , I've even shook hands with an engine room guy when the engine room door was open on side of ship , once at lock eight a new American Navy ship passed through and there were Navy personnel maning machine gun posts , very cool , a little unnerving , how scary do they think Port Colbourn is lol

@NigelHay the Whirlpool is pretty tame compared to going through Devil's Hole to get there. I have fished this entire length of the river many years, and it is a myth that you automatically get sucked under if you fall in. In most cases if you fall in, you deal with it like any other situation with current. What happens is that people who can't swim fall in, or they whack their head or break a leg when they slip on the rocks and fall in, or they get overtaken by one of the "flash" whirlpools that swirl down the river as a result of gushes of water that break loose from the Whirlpool periodically (those can be 30' across and quite terrifying if the water is running high...PFD or not, you're getting sucked down under). When you go under, you can get pinned under rocks for days or years, and no one will ever know. This, I believe, gives rise to the myth that the current "sucks you under", however if you can read water you will see that in most cases that is simply not true.

A few years ago a couple of guys died at the power plants when their boat went under. Those currents are weird. The water is at all different levels and moves in all directions at once.

I don't recall seeing any tables. I had recently seen some old photos of the area with people swimming. Those days are long gone. Security fences from one end to another

That was my first ship, as the AlgoBay. She had more incidents than you mentioned. When she was brand new, she collided with a tug, towing a saltie out of Sept Isles, Quebec. Ended up crunching and sinking the tug between the Bay and the salty killing I believe 2. In the early 2000s when trying to correct a list with the unloading boom, while making the Soo locks downbound. The boom swung out of control hitting the lock tie up wall and taking out several light poles. On the previous day the chief engineer drained the hydraulic oil from the boom for maintenance. The ship was known to be haunted by many crew members, including myself. Had some unusual experiences on her.
