Great video! I completely agree-it’s so worth spending the money on quality parts. After all, we’re saving on labor by doing the jobs ourselves. Recently, I bought a new front ABS sensor from Auto Doc. I didn’t go for the cheap option; instead, I chose the higher-priced non-genuine part with great reviews. Long story short, this didn’t fix the problem I was having with the car, and all signs pointed to the ABS module being faulty-a very expensive part to replace. For some reason, though, something just didn’t sit right with me. So, I ordered the genuine Volvo ABS sensor, fitted it, and all the problems disappeared.

Is your XC90 equipped with adaptive headlights? If it is, you’ll find a headlight button in the panel below the heater controls. If you do have the button, press and hold it for 30 seconds to switch the headlights from Left-Hand Drive to Right-Hand Drive, and vice versa.

@@indecisiveauto OK mate, it was worth a shot. I’m not sure if the standard models have the old manual switch at the back of the headlight to switch between RHD and LHD, but I’m pretty sure they do. I did loads of research because I brought my XC90 from the UK over to Spain. If you think you were worried, imagine how I felt! I flew over to buy my car, which did have 8 months of MOT left. But I knew that to import it to Spain, it would need to pass a thorough vehicle inspection. Thankfully, it did-apart from the non-Volvo-approved towbar being fitted.

I wonder who makes the volvo belts cos it's unlikely it will be volvo , just like the massively overpriced volvo penta parts that are made by other manufacturers.
@indecisiveauto9 күн бұрын
Absolutely! I'm not sure, like say if I've still got the car in another 3 years when I next swap the belt I might try my luck with the Dayco kit - it's much easier for most of the other Volvo models because I believe the belts and tensioners were all made by INA.
@volvo48014 күн бұрын
Now I know my trusted garage is using genuine Volvo parts where he can and doesn't want to touch any Gates stuff with a ten-foot barge pole. The tensioners and pulley on my V70 still look original, it's got 220,500 km (137,000 miles) on it now and starts to become noisy so I'm to have them replaced soon. I'm having the alternator exchanged as well just as a precautionary measure.
@indecisiveauto9 күн бұрын
Always a good idea - anything that goes bad on the aux belt area can be a killer. I had an air-conditioning compressor seize on a 1.8 Volvo V40 many years ago, thankfully I got it home just before it shredded the belt and caused disaster!
@Nino50014 күн бұрын
Interesting that the failing belt was also genuine Volvo. Obviously, we don't know how many miles it had done. I wouldn't be so quick to condemn the Gates item for being thinner as surviving continual flexing is the main design aim. A thinner belt would suffer less internal stress through this continual flexing back and forth and, of course, Gates are known as leaders in belt technology, having invented the toothed timing belt, which were, for many years, simply referred to as 'Gates belts'. You could say, they're the 'Hoover' of automotive belts.

Great video. I got a suspiciously cheap fanbelt for my Mini which failed after about 3000 miles. The car is 45 years old, many parts are original, and my only near-breakdown in the last year was from a brand new part. Have replaced it with a Continental one which 🤞 will be better!

Agree 100% with never skimping on parts quality where a failure can result in big bills. I've got an XC90 V8 and about 18 months ago the idler pulley failed. I don't recall the brand, but it was not Volvo OE. The failure damaged the timing cover, which I had to import from America because nobody could source one in Europe, let alone the UK. The replacement of the timing cover resulted in a huge oil leak, which was eventually tracked down to the crank seal which must have been disturbed when the crank pulley was removed. In the meantime, the timing cover job was done twice to replace the seals, meaning importing more seals and replacing inlet manifold gaskets. The oil leak killed the alternator and degraded the the newly replaced belt, so that had to be done again. The alternator failure has resulted in a raft of electrical gremlins which I'm still chasing, including a random misfire and what seems to be an impending ABS module failure. And, whilst it was in for misfire diagnostics, coolant was seen in one of the cylinders, so it looks like the short time it was running without the water pump was enough to pop at least one head gasket. I'm already several grand deep into trying to get it back up to dailyable condition and still need to spend probably several more, all because someone wanted to save £30 by buying cheap parts. If it wasn't a V8, I'd have thrown it away long ago. There are only 73 V8 Execs left.

Check the headlamps. Is it actually a car imported from the US rather than just one that’s spent time there? The rules for cars imported from the US regarding headlights are not quite what you’d expect as you’re allowed the flat beam with no kick provided they’re aligned within vOSA-specified parameters. I might be a bit of a nerd on this subject right at the minute

Well I don't mind watching XC60 videos as I've bought, repaired and sold a fair few and there are 2 in our household but it's your channel! The only thing I hate about them is the fuel economy. I saw your aux belt short, I'm booking both in to get pulleys checked and belts replaced as a precaution. Shame you farmed out the rear brake job, it's surprisingly easy once you've put the calipers in service mode.

Thanks! I think once the XC90 project is rolling I'll be a little more willing to do extra bits to the XC60 myself. For now it's one 'one reliable daily' a bit like Matt Furious' Merc Estate or Sion's Kia. I have a very reasonable and friendly local mechanic who does the majority of the bits for me. Just as a measure of how much DIY people get ripped off btw - it was cheaper for him to supply and fit exactly the same rear brake parts as was fitted - than it was for me as DIYer just to buy the parts! 🤯
@tomball8421 күн бұрын
@@indecisiveauto Wow that's crazy, a couple of years ago I was buying XC60 discs & pads from eBay for about £55. Ours have been very reliable considering the abuse they get on the access road to my cottage, the only breakdown we've had was when one of the rear ABS sensors failed and locked one of the wheels on thinking it was spinning out of control. Same happened to my partner's car 6 weeks later (funnily enough her XC is 6 weeks newer than mine!) If it happens to you, go into MY CAR and turn off DSTC, the wheels won't lock up anymore and you can drive it to the garage in "Sport Mode". Don't believe the forums that you need bearings, axles, etc. I got ripped off with mine, I shoved a sensor in the other one and it's been perfect ever since.
@indecisiveauto21 күн бұрын
Thanks I'll bare that in mind if I come across that sort of issue. Yeah the discs and pads from ECP came to £250 if I bought them myself (even with the usual discount code nonsense), I could of gotten them cheaper off Autodoc for something of similar or better quality but not in the timescale I wanted - my local guy fitted exactly the same discs and pads for £200 all in, so I'd of been daft not to really. They were pagid ones which I've read mixed experiences not had any problems with when I've fitted them before.

The lights are led on XC90 instrument cluster? Not sure why they didn't stick with bulbs as in the rest of P2 line up? The clusters are plug and play units anyway, the peeps you bought it from might have had one with similar mileage on the shelf, just me being cynical? This might seem obvious but did you check the instrument dimer switch wasn't just low, it did look like it as the DIM was illuminated OK but not the speedo etc... which are controlled by dimer switch?
@indecisiveauto27 күн бұрын
The dimmer switch is set to the max brightness position. I suspect it's too high resistance because it's intended for normal bulbs - plan to swap it for a dimmer switch from a later model to match the updated panel.

I bought a 54 xc90 couple of weeks a go for same money, I went for early XC90 because they don't have a dpf and swirl flaps. Biggest issues are undoing previous owners bodges! He allegedly used a local garage for all work, but after finding that the head light bulbs were in upside down and a few spanners left in the engine bay plus absolutely mullered lock nuts, either he should find another garage or leave the jobs to a garage? Currently rebuilding the parking brakes with 850 adjuster mod, new engine mounts, cambelt etc.. and a stage zero service, I have replaced all the discs and pads. Sold my V70 T5 to fundthe XC90 and give me some working capital, basically the same amount again. I did have some money left over to buy a 2010 Mondeo estate, transport whilst I sort the Volvo. Plan being the XC is sorted and good to go a few more years for under £1200. My reasoning is that for £1200 I could buy something newer with a longer MOT but still needing similar work at some point? I also get disabled tax relief which saves a few pennies. I was quite surprised how big the XC is when I parked it next to my L322 Range Rover, always thought of them as mid sized SUVs but it is on a par with LR though I don't think I would use the XC for serious off roading?

The diameter of the wheel magnifies any slight play in the bearing. Hence why the movement is apparently non existent when the wheel is removed.
