Caveat FINALLY discussed at 13:15. You're welcome. TLDR, loves the guitar, hates the nut. Will likely replace with bone. Edit: He said he would replace the pickups if he was keeping it, but will play with adjusting height. Sidebar: I would play with capacitors on that thing and pickup height/lug adjustments. The Epi Probuckers sound really good for what they are.

I just bought the red one. It's currently at GC doorbuster sale for $399. The one I bought had a broken off toggle switch. Well partially broken. It still works fine. I talked them into selling it to me for $299. At first they said no because they said it was already discounted. I said ya but you discounted it not knowing it was damaged. I obviously was trying to get a great deal and it worked. 😄 the nut on mine is fine.

Made two mods that made all the difference: First, replaced the bridge pickup with an Alnico 5. Not only did that greatly improve that position, but made a positive difference in the middle position too. More useful sound...not as bright. Second, replaced the 3-way switch because of the noise when you switch pickups. Slight neck adjustment. Lower the action just a little.

Have you had setups done on your guitars? Whether you buy a $200 guitar or a $5000 guitar, you should always have it set up. You'll never really know how good or bad a guitar is unless you do. Better yet, it can save you a lot of money, over time, to learn how to do your own setups. Manufacturers only ever get them close. It's up to you to set them up to your liking. The manufacturer can't do that because they don't know you.

@@grumpymikeguitar my performance partner was a guitar set up technician at heritage guitars in Michigan for some time ..he taught me many of the more basic procedures anything I cant do he can ...he has thrashed over these PRS guitars to get them right ..the pink one with new bone nut we have tried graphite and other lubricants on the bone nut...manufacturers and retailers dont do much of anything...no guitar new or used from any source comes properly intonated ..its my belief that most guitarists dont even know what intonation is ..the ones that do mostly dont really know how to do the adjustment..so guitars are never set up ..retailers probably figure its not worth spending time or money since nobody knows or cares..you are correct about a proper set up to start things

nobody mentions the free floating tremolo in reviews. my guitar techs tell me free floating doesn't work ,,these guitars come in a condition where they wont stay in tune till the free float is adjusted to where its no longer in effect ..it takes extra tremolo springs to get these to settle and stay in tune ..the tremolo is useless in my experience ..I got one pretty Zach Meyers that was defective ..the bridge was twisted out of alignment and the B string couldn't be properly intonated ..I sent it back to Daves guitars lacrosse Wisconsin ..I had told them to check intonation before shipping ..I have several and like them but PRS has some consistent problems

I don't usually have tuning issues with free floating trems due to the fact that most of the time the problem is with the nut not the trem. My DJT stays in tune remarkably well.

I got to try the DGT at guitar center and I got to compare it to the custom at the same time ..DGT is good but it's not that much different from a custom. main difference 3 control knobs ..good ..usually those would be 2 tone with 1 volume ..DGT has 2 volume 1 tone ...lack of 4 knobs is one of my major gripes about PRS guitars..supposedly they are a well thought out top end guitar ...not so much with 2 humbuckers but not full volume tone control for middle position switch playing ...trying the DGT killed any desire to buy one ..no point in having yet another guitar thats really pretty much the same as the ones I already have ..the 24-08 has way more tonal possibilities than a DGT

It would have been better if Gibson had designed a properly balanced instrument or just positioned the strap button in a place that eliminates the balance problems in the first place. This is why I refuse to buy and play Gibson guitars anymore. Gibsons have had obvious flaws for years. Players have asked Gibson to correct these flaws and they continue to do nothing while charging more and more for their substandard products each year.
@grumpymikeguitar
@grumpymikeguitar Ай бұрын
Gibson is certainly not the only manufacturer to make a neck heavy design, in case you haven't noticed, all guitars are getting more expensive. How much they charging for those new Fender Ultra IIs? Fact is, Gibsons have always cost a bit more and set owning one as a goal. Personally, I've loved every SG I've ever played, some more than others, but never disappointed. People love to bash Gibson, almost as if it's a sport. As a result, Gibson QC issues and PR missteps always get magnified while QC and misstep issues with other companies (of which there are many) get largely ignored. Gibson isn't perfect, but neither are any of the others. Do I wish they were more budget friendly? Of course I do, but if my budget ever allows it, I would certainly be buying more.
@leroyjenkins4811
@leroyjenkins4811 Ай бұрын
@@grumpymikeguitar More guitar manufacturers ARE getting more expensive. It’s a fact. It’s called inflation. But other companies are still trying to stay competitive and offer you as much bang for your buck as possible while still keeping prices as reasonable as possible. Gibson just charges entirely too much for their guitars considering they haven’t changed anything about them in decades. Gibson hasn’t fixed any of the design issues with their guitars (being too neck heavy, not offering a range of finishes, not offering bridge options anyone would want, improving the neck joint, improving the way the headstock is joined to the neck, etc.) Gibson just continues to make the same guitar with the same tech from before WW2 while charging astronomical prices for it. And I’ve owned 3 Gibson guitars. I’ve been disappointed with each of them. I was so disappointed I got rid of them. I’ve owned an SG, an Explorer, and a Flying V. The biggest disappointment was that Flying V. It was a Bday gift from my wife. She just wanted to surprise me with something special and it turned out to be a train wreck. She doesn’t play so she didn’t know what she was looking at. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish was uneven and had bubbles in it. The pickup cavities were cut incorrectly, and the thing absolutely would not stay in tune! All of those guitars had horrible fret buzz, uneven sharp fret ends, and they hadn’t been set up from the factory. I like Fenders. They play better and don’t cost as much while still being made in the US. Fenders are just better deal for the money. I also like a lot of the Jackson, Charvel, and ESP guitars too. Like I said. I’ve owned Gibsons. And I’m over it. There are other quality made guitars for cheaper other than Gibson. Gibsons kinda suck. Especially at their price point.
@grumpymikeguitar
@grumpymikeguitar Ай бұрын
@leroyjenkins4811 Clearly, you are not Gibsons target customer. Folks who buy Gibsons aren't really looking for an ESP (and let think for a minute about how much ESPs cost) or Charvel or Jacksons. Over the years, I've checked out hundreds of Gibsons, and I must say, I have not found their QC issues to be noticeably worse than the other brands. I've found plenty finish flaws in Fenders over the years, as well as bad factory setups. Any time you buy a new guitar, no matter what brand it is, you should always plan to have it setup specifically to your liking. I've yet to buy a guitar that was setup from the factory the way I want it. In fact, that's the reason I learned to do setups many years ago. It's saved me a lot of money over the years, as well as making some doing setups and repairs for others. Folks who buy Gibsons generally aren't looking for modern innovation, they want traditional. More often than not, when Gibson does release new designs, they don't sell very well. Traditional is their bread and butter. But, as I said, that doesn't appear to be your thing.
@leroyjenkins4811
@leroyjenkins4811 Ай бұрын
@@grumpymikeguitar You’re right. I am not Gibson’s target market. Not anymore. I’m not paying all that money for “traditional” features that were developed decades ago and therefore should be relatively inexpensive to produce on a production guitar today. You made a very interesting point. You said that when Gibson introduces new features, the guitars don’t sell well. That’s because Gibson puts new features on their guitars that no one wants. Let me give you an example. Do you remember that god awful Gibson “robot” automatic tuning system that they invented, put on the guitars, and then tried to charge an arm and a leg for? Yeah, that thing was a real winner! Not! It almost bankrupted them. I would be satisfied if Gibson reshaped their neck joint so it wasn’t so chunky and they included a volute in the headstock joint so the headstock doesn’t break off. I’d also like to see something like an Evertune bridge, some Floyd’s, some Hipshot fixed bridges, or just something other than Tune-o-matic, a Bigsby, or a wraparound. It’s 2024, almost 2025. And you mean to tell me Gibson can’t include some new finishes and hardware options without charging $8k plus for some of their guitars? Gibsons just aren’t a good value for what they are. There are plenty of other American made and even guitars made in first world countries that offer better options and value than Gibson. I was looking on Gibson’s website today and they wanted $10k+ for some of their Les Paul Custom reissues. That’s crazy! That’s a production guitar! Are you aware that you can order a custom built instrument from several boutique American builders for a fraction of the cost? When you buy a Gibson, you’re just buying the name. You’re not buying a superior instrument, just a more expensive one.

@leroyjenkins4811 What was Fenders last new shape? Stats and Teles aren't exactly new. Fender Custom Shop sells $10,000 guitars too. The Guitars you're talking about are made for collectors and investors because their value usually increases over time. They aren't made for players like us. I'm talking about Gibson USA not Custom Shop. That said, I'm moving and have a container to load. I suppose we can agree to disagree. Peace

The biggest difference is in resale value imo. The Epiphone will decrease somewhat more in value over the years than the Gibson will. Certain Gibson's have also been known to increase in value. Having said that; If resale doesn't bother you, the top-of-the-line Epiphones are pretty solid guitars when properly setup. This and the R9 are exceptional imo.
