Steve and Mike, I have a 2013 DB9 volante V12. I had a rattle and my garage fixed a lot on the front like bushes and rods, but not the rattle. Finally they told me that my ceramic breaks can rattle when I am on a stone road, bumpy road? They say that the screws on the disc can get a tiny bit of space because of usage. They showed me an old disc with the srews on it and explained this issue. I am not a DIY-er but technical educated on engines and stuf so not unknowing on this. Yes, when I am driving on a uneven road and hear the rattle it disappears when I slightly hit the break but is it really this? Can Mike tell me anything about this? Thanks in advance, Adri from The Netherlands

Hi thanks for that very informative video ! I guess it could also be interesting to discuss also oil viscosity. If I'm not mistaking AM recommends 0-40 which from my amateur point of view seems very thin for the huge engine that this is. no doubt even if water is stable at the sensor location, the block itself must pick very high temps in this condition. so I guess it s not only mechanical tolerance out of spec due to wear but also oil quality and age. If mine developped such a tick I guess I'll go 10W60 motul 300V with an antifriction additive like MCR or Pecarun p18

Your channel has been a great source for research, together with all the content from Mike and JayEmm. So after months of doing my homework I did it! Last wednesday I closed the deal on a beautiful Tungsten Silver 11/09 DB9 Coupe. Dealer maintained at the AM dealer where I'm buying it, and comes with new coils and plugs, a service and 12 months warranty. Thanks for your dedication, it helped me realise a dream.

Thanks to you, Mike from BR and Jay Emm, I've been able to do a lot of the research I needed to decide whether or not a DB9 would be for me. After months of searching and weeks of pondering, I've finally found the perfect phase two from 11/09 at an official dealer. We made the deal yesterday and I hope to take delivery shortly after the holidays. It will come with a fresh service plus new coils and plugs, 12 months of warranty and so on. Also, a seconde set of wheels, the original car cover and ctek charger. Thanks so much for the enormous effort you put into this channel and helping people like me to make a long-cherished dream come true.

My son bought a decent example. I think he paid around 40k for it, year 2000s. He's had it for 7 or 8 years now. First couple of years, he was all into it, but as each year passes, I can tell he is not enjoying it. He won't admit it, but I think he's had at least one scary trip to the dealer, and since that, he takes it out rarely. Now it's a garage fixture, not even a monthly driver, more like every other month, or every third month. He does a lot of routine maintenance on it, which isn't complicated, but can be a PITA to work through. They're cool cars but I couldn't just let something sit like that.

Very interesting. I had a spell instructing on supercar track days and they were always jump starting the DB9's (3 laps, park, start, 3 laps) just pulled the rear seat panel and connected a jump pack, no issues as far as I know, but the cars were sheds so I may nor have noticed. 🤣

Good to hear from the experts. My DB9 also needs some support via a jump pack occasionally. Works like a charm. Different brand than yours but same type. 5000A, 26800mAh, About 80€. It is amazing how these small batteries crank the big engine. Way better than if using jumper cables. And drains at a slower rate than the car battery when parked for many weeks. :-). It's always in the car.

The question is, if one’s car does not have the tick now, what are the chances it will down the road?. If this is a design fault, best put a few shekels aside as it will likely happen to you or any other 450 bhp owner.

So many times, in the US at least, the title "professional" simply means that the person is getting paid to work on your car. It does not imply competence.
@elmondo3543Ай бұрын
I think that's the same for any line of work. Competence is on the decline here in the UK unfortunately. Why?...lack of discipline!

On my 2014 Vantage, I had to hunt for the trunk release for the fuel cap, as the button didn't work, its behind a panel, but that didn't work either! I had to use a plastic fuel card to get the cover to flip up, I have been trying to figure out what was causing the flap to stick and not open even though the release was working, and eventually figured out there is a little rubber adjuster, that was catching, so I have now done a bit of trimming as it seemed a bit squashed and seems to have solved the problem, I think its used to adjust the flush of the flap.

For my 2014 Vantage, I had to hold the T1/T2 for 2 flashes and release, and that cleared it.

Thanks Steve, I just did a bunch of work on my 2014 Vantage, it was due an oil change, and I also wanted to check the air filters, and change the door strut/dampers on both sides, as they were not staying open when on a slope etc. This video was super helpfull, I actually ordered some after market ones as you said the AM ones even new were not great, so I got some from Life Supports Depot that were way less $ and actually work really well! I found it easier to remove the front end first, as it made it easier to get to the back one, and then have someone move the door to the correct opening to remove and install without the tension. Just ordered a couple more to try on the trunk/boot/hatch on the coupe from the same place, $35 for the pair vs. $100+ for the AM originals.

What year(s) DB9 have this issue, do the V12 DB7s have it and to the V12 Vanquishes have this as well?
@Aston1936Ай бұрын
My limited understanding is a 'Yes', but there are other reasons an Aston V12 can tick, so I'm not sure what's the most likely cause in the earlier V12 designs. Thanks for watching!
@fransb8543Ай бұрын
Is it true that this doesn't appear to affect the 476 hp engines? I'm looking at db9s and some of the 450hp examples I see are very nice but I'm wary of the earlier engines because of this. I hear mike say that it's not a given that the 450 will start to tick but I really don't feel like taking the gamble. Over here, these cars are mostly still north of 50k euros and the 476 cars are nearer 70k.
@randa200771Ай бұрын
The newer 476 engine has an oil way for the small end bearing and does not suffer from the issue. It is only the early 450 engines that have the issue as far as I'm aware. There are many differences as the cars go on in build years but the glass key model is usually thought to be a good starting point.
@fransb8543Ай бұрын
@randa200771 thanks, it confirms what I had extrapolated from BR's other videos. Surprisingly hard to find a non-sport pack one in a decent color configuration on the normal ten spoke wheels. Most others are sport pack and Black. Currently there is only one for sale I want and it's in Belgium (I'm in the Netherlands).

How tall are you?? Mike is at least 6’4” !! I’ve done 95% home maintenance on my DB9 and have been to Bamford Rose a couple of times for advice and a removal of my tracker. Mike is awesome but I’m a shop manager, not an executive, so I’m intimidated by costs associated with garage maintenance. Mike was totally understanding of this and really decent towards me. He could have just shoo’d me away as he’s probably got way bigger projects worth ££££’s but he didn’t. I need him to code a 2nd hand ABS unit to my DB9 now and I’m sure he’ll be fine with that. We have machined out/removed the liners from 5 engines (DB7,VQ,DB9). Liners had moved in every engine. In 4 engines one or more liners were out of spec (out of round) and would not hone back to tolerance. Does an out of round liner cause the tick or vice versa? Suspect a bit of both.
@Aston193629 күн бұрын
Hi Richard. I'd agree with you here. I think there may be multiple sources that can cause an issue. A question I should have thought to ask was how often in a tear down for the small end bush do they find liners that are out of spec, and how that influences the repairs. I expect they do the measurements as part of the process of piston selection and honing, etc. Hi to the Crew!
@craigelam6830Ай бұрын
I’ve watched a few videos on KZbin blaming the liner sinking in the block. Have you seen this at BR ?
@Aston193629 күн бұрын
Interesting comment. I've seen the other discussions as well. I think there may be multiple potential sources of a problem, but Mike seems to be saying he's mainly seeing issues with the small end bush. I'd have to let Mike respond on his own, but if he's only changing the small end bush and pistons, and the problem resolves, it seems likely there wasn't a problem with the ovaling (at least with that particular engine). No absolutes. Thanks for watching!

I had an Alfa Romeo 33 1.5 ti with the flat four engine with exactly the same noise when the engine was properly hot. It only had a few hundred miles from new. The dealer ( Magoletsi) had several attempts at fixing it including changing the cams but to no avail. It might have been the same little end fault it seems. I could not live with the noise and sold it taking a big hit. I will never buy Alfa again. For this to happen on an Aston is disgraceful.
@Aston1936Ай бұрын
It would be nice if Aston stepped up and helped those owners with the tick in someway. Perhaps an extended engine warranty for up to 100K that covers the tick. Even just providing the parts needed at cost would be something major. Thanks for watching!
@gr0wler147Ай бұрын
it’s so unacceptable for a car of that value to be as poorly engineered. Newey and Stroll others have so much work to do restore faith in the brand.
@Aston1936Ай бұрын
Perhaps. DB9's are touching 20 years old now. It is stupid that some cars are developing this mechanical issue after only 20K miles. Connecting Rod bushings generally outlast any car's lifespan and 100's of K miles. But, bushings need oil, and these may not be getting enough (just like the infamous Porsche IMS bearings). Thanks for watching!
@buggerlugz6753Ай бұрын
Is it just me or isn't this a manufacturing defect? (like using substandard pistons/rods/pins) Like Mclaren using rods that are too thin in their engines!
@drewmog123456Ай бұрын
Is the clicking coming from one small end? Are they all equally susceptible to the problem or could all twelve end up ticking? (!).
@Aston1936Ай бұрын
I believe the theory is the old design of the small end bush was a simple oiling hole (not a full grooved channel around the circumference) and the oil pressure at the rear of the engine is lower, and thus the rears get oiled less than the front. Some say the problem appears in Cylinders 5/6 and 11/12 the most. Lots of lore around this issue. This video was just keen to show if the engine _has_ the issue developing. Thanks for watching!
@mikeprzyrembelАй бұрын
@@Aston1936 Why should low oil pressure affect the small ends, are they not just splash lubricated? 50 years ago I worked on a mk3 Zodiac which had a similar problem caused by Ford not noticing that a piece of drill bit had broken in the drilling at the big end that fired a jet of oil at the piston.
