This is really scary when it happens on faster roads outside London. On descents where you've picked up some speed and a car suddenly starts creeping out into the road I never know whether to slam on the brakes or not. If they have seen you, scrubbing some speed off just seems to invite them to have a go at slipping in the gap. I've considered buying one of those super loud 'car' horns to deal with this, but I'd want one with the trigger accessible from the brakes. My other thought was it would be nice to have a remote that would set my lights to go on full lumen crazy strobe so I could trigger a 'super visible' mode whenever I approach these junctions.

@@CycleGaz and were cyclists allowed in that bus lane? I know of one bus lane in Dundee where only busses are allowed in it, no bicycle on the sign. It was a pretty confusing video as no reason why, i assume, you were stopped. Were you actually taken to court or did they just stop you to chat about the incident? Or did they pass by on a call and you just used the clip to make it look like you were pulled over?

@@CycleGaz honestly the police really don't help themselves with how they are seen by the public when they pull crap like this! And I'm a huge supporter of giving more funding to the police to increase their numbers as we need more out on the roads to actually police them properly, get illegal e-bikes off the road, stop speeders and dangerous drivers etc. But things like this just doesn't help my argument for more police when this is the quality of officers they seem acceptable to be out without supervision.

I don't live in London or know the area but from what we see - as you approach the zebra crossing by Lidl there are no markings or signs that it is a 'bus lane'. Between there and where the solid line starts there are no signs that a bus lane is ahead. (0:05). The lane is not signed as a bus lane until 1:49 where there is an 'End of Bus Lane' sign on a lamp post! I'd be interested to know how would someone who was not from the area know that was a bus lane until they were in it? 🤔

On some of the examples there are pedestrians in the way obscuring the drivers view. Also you can be in the A-Pillar blind spot, again just not seen. But all the drivers here seem to pull out slowly, so this is a chance for both to avoid any contact. If they pulled out at speed I would be on edge. But this is where local knowledge comes in handy, you know this is a "problem" area and ride cautiously. And I get it, you have priority as you're on the main road. And it is annoying having to slow and lose momentum but all these are secondary to your safety. If you don't think you've been seen, slow and let them clear and let it go. It's not always us Vs them or they do it maliciously.

And you are the fortunate one. At least you have no turn on red, unlike us here in the states. Here, if the light is on red, all they are looking for is a wee gap in traffic, and *NOT* looking the other way to see if they might hit, or at the very least, interrupt pedestrians. And don't get me started when there is a red arrow light, and they get upset because someone isn't going regardless.

@@sepiarain My god, I'm so sorry that happened to you, that was absolutely terrifying. I hope you have been able to recover physically and mentally. Do you still ride a bike at all? Thank you for posting the video, although I don't like focussing on negatives, I think it's very important for both cyclists and drivers to be aware of the potential consequences of terrible driving habits or just brief moments of inattention. It taught me a lesson as well. Although this was exactly the kind of fast road that I was warning about in an earlier comment, when I watched your video I was focussed on the left, expecting that van to pull out and was completely blindsided by the pick up from the right. It did look like this was a textbook case of A-pillar blind spot as you were travelling at a constant speed and so (absolutely shockingly) was the pick up truck, it didn't slow down at all for the give way markings. Terrible road design as well. It really angers me that there aren't more serious consequences for this kind of driving. Our prison system is crumbling and not suited to dealing with these issues, but we could easily issue much, much more serious fines, proper victim compensation and extended driving bans with extensive driving courses at the end of them. Driving violations should also be enforced much more consistently at a lower level, people should know that if they drive carelessly day to day they will lose their license long before they have the chance to actually hurt someone. Anyway rant over, good luck with the compensation, hopefully karma will settle the balance in your favour in the future!

You’re lucky to have at least some proper protected cycling infrastructure. Most of the ones around me in Herts are basically shared pavements, the odd path and the rest through parks . But yes, there is no thought by local councils when it comes to joined up protected cycling infrastructure because most councils just don’t want the objections and the least amount of hassle from residents. Apparently according to Andrew Gilligan - often councils will say they will build cycling infrastructure and accept the funds and then just use it for other services. Cyclists really are second class citizens and have to make do with what is out there including sharing road and pavement space.
