I often debate in my head which is worse not seeing or not caring, not seeing is scary because they literally don't know you're there. I'm edging towards this one

Motorists brain's have been tuned to recognise danger and risk to them, so often they do literally not see cyclists. Fault is still 100% theirs. Wearing high Viz and having lights is no guarantee to be seen. Trying to make eye contact with a driver coming out from a junction is incorrect, always watch the wheels, they will let you know if they have seen you or not. Always prioritise your own safety.

The London Cycling Campaign have a good article on their web site, something like, What the RAF can teach us. Basically, the human brain is developed for 1000s of years of processing things at running speed. Stick it in a faster moving car (or plane) and add in other stuff it fails to cope and often pieces together bits of information, missing out cyclists/ motorbikes. The RAF teach their pilots to look and look again so things aren't missed out!

Best advice i can give is watch their front wheel, if you see that move then they have not seen you and be ready to take avoiding action. Something my dad taught me and he was an advanced driving instructor.

I think the problem may be a driver sees a cyclist and has an image in their head of a rider on an old 3 speed, Sturmer Archer bike with a wicker basket on the front and a Miss Marple character onboard. They're not used to fast cyclists. Extremely poor lack of speed judgement. 🤬🤬

The onus is on the car driver to make sure it's safe before they move, they are the one coming into the road. Too many people signal then move without looking to see if it's safe to move. And that taxi is exactly how I ended up with a busted shoulder a few years ago, though in my case the Audi driver didn't use his indicator (early evening in early October, with two front lights on my road bike) - the police didn't care though as no action taken against the numpty.
