I managed to rescue my CTM 644 from my mum's garage a couple of months ago (I didn't put it in there), where it had been living for a couple of decades. Unfortunately it had been sitting on a damp surface and the main board is heavily corroded. I'm only an ameteur with electronics but even so, I reckon it's a lost cause. The components that haven't rusted off look in good nick!
@AndyDozКүн бұрын
Let it sit in the warm and dry for a few months... You'll be surprised what survives
@PhillipParr22 сағат бұрын
@@AndyDoz I suspect it needs a full bath in isoprop and most if not all of the resistors replaced (they seem to have suffered most corrosion). Many of the traces are also in bad condition. The bottom of the tube itself is corroded so I'm not confident that bit'll work either. I'll keep it for posterity but unless I become an expert restorer in the next 30 years, I think she's gone.

Thanks so mych for this, just received a 65 from france and has helped no end... Pinch roller shaft coated in thick black grease though (along with coming with a tub of it!) and thoight, that can't be right?! Such a messy substance to have near a tape path. I've always used Singer sowing machine oil for the shafts on Space echo's etc. Would you recommend this too for this application? Thanks again!
@AndyDozКүн бұрын
I tend to think that grease has less of a tendency to creep.
@dubcavern641419 сағат бұрын
Ah I see! I've gone with the machine oil for now anyway whilst I work on it and test. Unfortunately super weak almost non existent echoes on mine, even though seller is adamant it was working fine!

I have a Dansette Major record player I am restoring and want to upgrade the Cartridge, looking at your preamp board, it is powered from 12v Would it work from a rectified supply from the EL84 heaters.
@AndyDozКүн бұрын
Yes. Just be careful. If one side of the heaters is grounded, ensure you only use a half-wave bridge. Pull the valve (valves?) and check for continuity.
@AndyDozКүн бұрын
Oh, hang on, is it just a single el84?
@AndyDozКүн бұрын
Just did a brief Google search. Dansette major appears to have a tapped motor for the heaters, so one side is neutral, so that should be your ground side. The issue is I'm not sure my board will have enough output swing for a single el84. If memory serves the original cartridge provided about 4v of output. My board is only around a volt

My first computer was a Commodore Vic-20. I knew nothing about computers until I got it as a surprise Christmas present in 1981 or 82 at the latest. The closest thing I had to a computer before that was probably my Speak and Spell. Probably around the early-mid 80s I remember my dad buying a series of computer magazines that you collected and put into special binders. Can't remember what it was called (probably had the word computer in the title) but I remember the binders being dark with I think green lettering. Anyone remember these? I remember there was a photo from Doctor Who in one of them which I think was from The Twin Dilemma so I guess that makes these magazines from around 1984. They featured all the home computers that were available at the time and I'm sure this Oric-1 was in there.

Input magazine? I think that had green binders.

Happy New Year, Doz :) Nice to see this Osglim working! I saw something similar in a very old Cossor Oscilloscope as a teenager. Gas filled devices are a whole different world..... I've a hydrogen filled Barreter in my old GEC TV from 1956 to control the inrush current to the valve heaters.. The TV still works (so one of my better repairs, lol). Anyway, well done and keep the videos coming. All the best :)

I have a couple of Osglim light bulbs from the 1940's, these plug in to a standard bayonet fitting & run on 240vac. they have a beehive internal shape. I guess they were intendrd as night lights, the envelope is a clear standard light bulb shape.

The main problem was a bad SMD diode, but what does that SMD diode do to the circuit?
@AndyDoz13 күн бұрын
The main problem was the units had been used with the wrong PSU. That diode is polarity protection but is in series with the +ve rail. Once it had failed, the main circuitry was reverse poled, thus blowing the fuse. Quite why the diode actually failed I don't know. It's lucky the amp circuitry itself wasn't damaged.

Is it 24V to the clock at all time, or is only every other minute?
@AndyDoz20 күн бұрын
It's a pulse. The polarity of the pulse reverses every minute
@jockethebastard20 күн бұрын
@ I watched the video but guess I lack the knowhow and terminology, but what component achieves the pulse exactly? Is it the microcontroller or some IC?
@AndyDoz18 күн бұрын
The microcontroller decides the direction of the pulse, and controls the h-bridge which sets the polarity of the pulse. There's a better description and a diagram on the website andydoz.blogspot.com/2018/05/synchronised-westerstrand-impulse-clock.html
@jockethebastard15 күн бұрын
