Most cameras detect light on/off as motion activity. So cameras cannot be used reliably as motion detection sensors as they create inifinite loop of turning on the light

Eric, what’s the best way to integrate non-Apple Kit devices (Ring and a few others) into Home Kit, Home Bridge or something like Hoobs?

Hello, I just purchased a iPod mini, I set it up in the HomeKit and added a Schlage encode plus locks, the locks work to unlock and lock from the app, but when I asked the Mini to unlock the lock, it responds with this phrase before I can help with that you’ll need to add a first name or nickname to information in contacts, how can I get the locks to work when talking to the mini. Thanks

Also, you could use your Apple device location to control automations! (I.e. When arriving home, turn on certain lights or your bedroom’s AC). I love it!

I connected my older Nest to Apple Home using Home Assistant through the Google API and it works great. I had a bunch of lights and power switch/sensors and other things all using Matter and Thread and I found them all very unreliable. They were always a pain to set up because half the time the code didn't work or there was some error or it couldn't find the device. Then once I did get them set up, they would lose connections all the time. 50/50 chance whether the lights would work when I tell them to do something. I think Matter is still just too new. All my lights are back on a Zigbee network in Home Assistant and it works amazingly. I bridge that whole thing back to Apple Home, so I can still use Siri and all my Apple commands, it just doesn't lose connection anymore like it used to.

That’s a great point. It could be 24 ways. I was thinking of CarPlay as just another way to control via Siri on your iPhone but when you account for garage door control that pops up when close to your home it really is an additional control

No! Google betrays its customers. I would never buy another google product. Google ruined the Nest thermostat with their greed. Even Eric explains the rightful weariness with how Google manages its products and services.

Ive had a tought time trying to decide which thermostat to buy and eventually landed on Nest. My only issue is that with other brands they tend to have smart valves for radiaters too which i assumed would work better with related thermostat. Which smart valves should i get to go with the nest? Or doesn't it really matter?

great video! is it possible to set an apple device (like Apple TV) to matter and homekit at the same time? I can't get it worked... I have my Apple TV set to matter. In the homekit app I created a new "house" matter bases. I can't see my HomePod mini and HomePod 2egen in the matter environment. They are both set on "homekit". I have al my lights, plugs (both Philips hue), doorsensors (aquaria) and logitec circle view cameras working on homekit.

Giving guests control of a particular room like a guest bedroom would be fantastic, in addition to the garage door or front door and their respective locks.

Is it worth the upgrade? The answer for me is certainly no. As long as the previous one works fine, why should you update something that you barely touch once installed? I installed mine almost 10 years ago, and if I have to do something, I usually do from smartphone, and even that it's rare...

I bought two and have had them for a year. Here’s my take: Pros: -Small -Beautiful minimalist design -Links with Apple HomeKit -Accurate temperature reading Cons: -Loses connection with HomeKit at random times and has to be reset or removed as an accessory and added back as a new accessory. -Eats through batteries quickly. -The readout on the unit is very difficult to see. -Celsius is the default reading, and must go into the Eve app to change to Fahrenheit.

Just curious since you've already got your hands on these, seems like they don't offer flex capabilities with these panels (ability to place them in a corner and have them connected across both walls), however it seems like the connections are the same as the shapes since they state the rigid linkers can be used to connect them to shapes panels, however they state that the flex connectors will not work. Just wondering if you have any insight or if you can potentially see why it wouldn't physically be compatible based on what you can see in hand, thanks a ton!

Hi Eric - thanks for the video. I saw that since this one you’ve switched to Ring. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are here in 2024. I really like HomeKit integration and am always weary about anything Amazon owns from a privacy standpoint. Also, hello from a fellow Illinoisan! 🙋🏻♂️

I have noticed that the HomeKit widgets finally work. In older iOS versions they were not updated when a scene was turned on or off. So you can even put your most used scenes and devices on your first page. No need to swipe down always available.

It's also one of the largest security holes a property can have if you do this if your garage door is smart controlled make sure the door within the garage to the home remains locked, and that nothing of great value lives in the garage otherwise you're a fantastic target for some free bikes or tools or whatever

You don’t need to enable ipv6 on your router. It’s IPV6 ULA which is done on the fly. Unless for some reason you have hardware that is specifically blocking this, you don’t need to do anything special with your router.

In shortcuts, the toggle accessory may be my favorite not mentioned here. In one of the very early betas, this option was also available in the “convert to shortcut” in Home but was later removed. Also…the ability to add multiple conditions to shortcuts.
