Hey, Tom and Billie ❤ I hope your memorial day holiday was fantastic!!! We had a houseful all weekend. Family came and set up a camper, we had a bonfire with s'mores, our company helped with the gardens, it was great! I caught a juvenile Wolf Spider, while I was trimming under a rose bush, for my granddaughter to see up close, (she loves my collection), and I ended up having to set it up in an enclosure, after the spider lesson, because all I heard was, "Aren't you gonna keep it"?, when I took it to the woodpile to release it 😅 So now, I have a new friend and it has been lovingly named "Wolvie Spidery" 😂 I know that story came out of left field, but I had to share it with y'all ❤ Also, I agree with you, Billie...H Macs are phenomenal spiders. I actually ordered (and paid for) ONE. I ended up with 4! Lol 😂 I'm not complaining though 😊 Since I commented last, I've adopted two Giant Huntsmans and two Velvet Spiders. I'm thoroughly enjoying, and respecting, the hobby. Hope y'all have a phenomenal week ahead, much love and high fives...ttyl!

@TomsBigSpiders4 ай бұрын
I have two females and I love them; they are stunning spiders. That said, many folks hear "Brachypelma" and think that the spider will be docile. My two are quite skittish and always have been, and I think that it's important for folks interested in this species to know and to be prepared for. Sure, temperaments may vary from spider to spider, but it's good to be prepared for one that may be a little more high strung.
@Teacherspetspoods4 ай бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders I would say that mine will probably tolerate handling but I've never tried. I'm just afraid something would spook her and she bolts of my hand. I agree that this species is probably not as docile as some others in the same genus. I definitely wouldn't recommend handling a boehmei. I would only ever do that if the spider decides to go for a walk onto my hand by herself. Though... I highly doubt this species would ever just do that.

Hey Tom . Love the video such beautiful animals. My favorite part of any video is seeing the spider. Gonna have to keep an eye out for a P. sp. Purple gorgeous spider. Just a comment for your podcast yeah my T. Abopulosis is totally a dirt spider. I rarely see her now even as an adult. Hey, Erik! Yeah, I try to make these videos about the spiders and NOT me. haha As for the M. robustum, I have always considered that one to be a fossorial species 100%. Hey Tom! Fantastic video as always! I absolutely love how everything you do is educational, you're not just giving us a a slideshow of pretty spiders you're actually explaining stuff about them which makes it way more interesting. I may have to pick up a T. vagans, your girl is super pretty! I LOVE that you kept the name Betty White! My P. auratus is also named Betty White for obvious reasons (she's my golden girl!) ✨ Also, I found myself binge watching jumping spider videos about an hour ago and I have to tentatively retract some of my previous statements regarding jumping spiders. I have one right now and I'm obsessed with the way she hunts and her cute little pedipalp movements. While I still think that some things about the fad can be detrimental, I no longer blame the jumping spiders, rather I blame the new keepers who fail to research appropriately. I'm also hoping to pick up a velvet spider in the future, so I no longer hold the venom and animosity against the "cute" spiders. Oops. I actually rescued a jumping spider stuck in its moult about a week ago, I had to gently trim away her moult. It was painstaking and tedious but like of course I tried to help. She looked like she was recovering but I came home to find she had popped off a leg that was still a bit stuck and bled out. Not going to lie, I was pretty devastated. Hopefully I will be able to grab up another, they are just so much fun to watch hunt and feed. Hope all is going well with you and your family. Keep up the awesome work, Tom! - Charlotte
@TomsBigSpiders5 ай бұрын
Hey, Charlotte! Sorry for the late reply. The last two weeks of school were super busy, and I totally got behind. Hahahaha NOW you change your mind! Where were you when Tarantula Kat decided that in my podcast, I was making fun of her? haha Seriously, I get it because I was the exact same way. The problem is, one of the ways keepers "research" these days is to watch popular social media personalities. They see someone with thousands of subscribers on Instagram and decide that the person MUST know what he/she is doing. Sadly, they are often very wrong. It's still a major issue in the hobby. And I'm so sorry to hear about that little jumping spider. :( I hope all is well! Tom

I personally prefer your philosophy on not disturbing your spiders for footage and photos. What footage you do end up getting is usually in the enclosure and I really appreciate seeing what a species does to its enclosure when doing my research. I mean really, most of them hide for considerable amounts of time, so the biggest question I ask when buying a spider isn't so much "what color is it?", or "How big does it get?"...it's "Does it web?" So being able to see what a lot of these species do to their enclosure means a lot more to me in doing research than the guys who put them on a stage under lighting. Yeah there's the aspect of "respecting your animals" but I am here to learn so when I see a species in one of your videos I may have overlooked that has considerable amounts of webbing, I'm like alright, time to scroll the websites and get to ordering. I know you're educating, but let me tell you, you're a hell of a salesman lol 😆
@egzy78595 ай бұрын
Unlike Richard from Tarantula Collective he often took his Ts out for filming it was so unnecessary. You can actually notice his Gbb is limping and kinda lethargic I say due to the handling....
@TomsBigSpiders5 ай бұрын
I REALLY appreciate that. I tend to get some comments about the footage not being the best because I try not to disturb the spider for photo shoots. I bought a T. Vegans from my local reptile shop and it had recently molted so its colors were what attracted me. I still love the spider, I’ve had it for a few weeks now and I’m not sure if your t. Vagans do it, but mine burrowed into its new enclosure like a fossorial.
@TomsBigSpiders5 ай бұрын
Hey, John! One of mine sure did. I'm actually posting a video later today where I talk about some of the terrestrial spiders that burrow a bit.
@Johnant3385 ай бұрын
I’ve tried to find videos on the T. Vagans burrowing but I’m not sure if they’re not a popular tarantula, or if it’s just my tarantula. Having other tarantulas, I’m used to non typical behavior from them. But I’ve never seen a vagans make a burrow like mine. It’s almost the entire bottom of the enclosure has tunnels
@TomsBigSpiders5 ай бұрын
I think that a lot of folks hear that they are "terrestrial" and don't give them enough substrate to burrow in. In my opinion, this is why some folks will report that theirs are defensive and "nasty." I have two, and one is laid back and doesn't burrow. The other burrows.
