Great video, you have some gorgeous ladies! It's funny, photos/videos of these guys never seem to properly convey just how big they are (footage in general, not just yours!). I saw my first one in real life at the Philly zoo a few months ago, a ~9-10" T stirmi, and was really shocked and awed by just how huge it was! It was like, "OH, that spider IS seriously massive". Makes me think that people who write them off as "just a big brown spider" haven't ever seen one in person, because it was seriously breathtaking to behold! How could anyone think "it's just..." about something so big???

Definitely going to have to get that one in a new enclosure as well. Also, funny little story for you. I had a fake plastic skull in with my Queen for ages for decoration. She recently decided she didn't like it and threw it in her water dish. Was thinking of an idea the other day of somehow constructing a liquified feeder pulp like a cricket smoothie for tarantulas to drink after a moult rather than sucking the juice out of their moults for more of a chance to get an intact moult and also benefit the spider with nutrients which i think would help them harden up after a moult
@TomsBigSpiders2 ай бұрын
I think that sucking the excess moisture out of their molts is the natural thing for them to do. I've even trickled some water on the molts in case they want more of a drink. I don't think that their is a need to mess with them until after they've hardened up a bit. Just my 0.02.

I'm torn. A part of me worries about the invasive aspect of it and what impact they could have on the local ecosystems. The spider dork in me, however, is super excited about the idea. I really want to see one in person, and if they kill lantern flies, they could be beneficial.

Really? How large is your stirmi in comparison to your blondi? Does it have a larger legspan, or does it appear to be thicker overall?
@thegael19962 ай бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders Mine was about 10 - 11 inch's, while Blondi's have more body mass the Stirmi's have larger stronger legs, larger fangs and was the voracious Tarantula I've ever had. You can tell the Stirmi is more built for power and speed when compared to Blondi and Apophysis.
@TomsBigSpiders2 ай бұрын
@@thegael1996 See, the size differences I've seen have been negligable. As for being built with speed, my vote would be for the T. apophysis over the stirmi or blondi. Those long legs and smaller bodies make them quite fast. That said, who knows?

Hey Tom, been a massive fan for years and a keeper myself. Though my Theraphosa Blondi is still a juvie, i was curious if the Reptile Growth 20" x 10" x 8" (there's an 11" option) is big enough for an adult T.Blondi? Or do i need to be thinking of converting a RUB? Any guidance greatly appreciated. I use your husbandry notes for all of my other T's (currently up to 49) and love the educational content!

Hey tom, I just got 2" inch Blondi last year. Do they get less humidity dependent as they get bigger? its about 4" inch now and I'm kinda stressing putting it in a bigger enclosure since I'm afraid the enclosure would get mold because of the humidity
@TomsBigSpiders2 ай бұрын
Hey, Jem! I think that the adults still need the moist substrate and access to water dishes. I have a theory that many of the adult deaths are due to spiders that didn't have enough access to moisture when they were getting ready to molt. I would keep the lower levels dry and let the top dry out. If you're in a region where it is naturally humid all of the time. You don't have to obsess as much about the moisture. I hope that helps!

If the heteropoda maxima is rhe largest spider due to leg span, wouldn't that make the Apophysis the largest out of the three Theraphosa due to longest leg span? 😅
@TomsBigSpiders2 ай бұрын
There have been many debates over which spider is the largest. Unfortunately, a photo of a molt (that, as far as anyone knows, could have been doctored) that only a handful of people have seen does not constitute proof. Someone would have to have an adult that large and have it measured by someone of authority.

I too gloved up when I rehoused my T.Blondi recently and it was totally necessary as I got a furious hair attack. Mine is still looking quite slender after two years, when do they start chunking out in your experience?
@TomsBigSpiders2 ай бұрын
Hey, bud! Hope all is well. If I remember correctly, mine started chunking out at around 6-7" or so. At that point, they tend to thicken up a bit. I check out one of my rehousing videos from when mine were around 2 and a half, and they were around 6" and still pretty gangly.

hi Tom, I live in Canada and unfortunate dubias and most feeder roaches in general are considered invasive and we don't have easy access to them, do you think a Theraphosa would be at all viable to raise on crickets and worms, I feel like it just wouldn't be enough :(

You can have discoid roaches
@TomsBigSpiders2 ай бұрын
Sorry, I thought that I had a note about this in the video. Yes, you could feed them large crickets or worms. You would just have to feed more of them in a sitting, and maybe a bit more often than you would if you were using larger prey.

@@shsd7579 this. discoid roaches are legal. of course things like speeding and cannabis use prior to 2018 were also illegal. you can find whatever you want on kijiji. so obviously a large part of the community doesn't care about some pencil pushers laws.
