There have been many studies of flute material. But material is immaterial. That is because in flutes and shakuhachi, the air vibrates, not the material. When differences are heard, they are mistaken for the material rather than the geometry. Examples of geometry which are mistaken for material are the roughness of wood in the bore, the thickness of the wall around holes (the chimney effect), and the sharpness of the blowing edge. I am just now starting to learn the shakuhachi, I have the shakuhachi YUU, This is my first week of learning how to play. Out of all the vids. out there, they are no better set of vids that explains how to get a sound better then this persons playlist here on this channel. I can make a sound I start out in RO work my way up to each note, and then if I have enough breath left I start back down, After I take a breath and try to hit a note they are nothing their so I have to stop and find where I have to be before sound starts to come out, I then leave it there while still blowing and when i start to cover the holes the sounds goes away.

Excellent. Personally I am convinced that the received idea that keys were introduced to wind instruments in order to enable chromatic figuration is rubbish and this recording is further proof. I am myself playing Bebop on a one key baroque flute and the traditional fingerings of this instrument are even enharmonic (lots of forked fingerings that sound great on a good baroque flute, also some shaded toneholes but not nearly as many as you use on the shakuhachi). The reason why Boehm, Sax & co. devised the modern key work was that they wanted every note to sound the same. That is exactly what we do not want in Jazz (or Baroque or Japanese music), so I think what you do is both reasonable and admirable. Keep up the good work!

If you leave out the relatively primitive instruments piano, e-bass and drumkit, you‘d have the basis for a truly subtle new fusion music. Modern Chinese music might have a potential to rediscover the more earthy qualities of traditional music- 郭岷勤 and colleagues are stunning though this is only a beginning! Have you tried the lower pitched and more funky teagum (daegeum)? I think in terms of timbre and articulation Korean traditional music retained many qualities of ancient Confucian music that were lost in China. It was the closest to Soul Jazz that I have heard anywhere and their instruments are fantastic!

This is fantastic shakuhachi playing. I would relish it even more if there wouldn‘t be that tinny saxophone constantly drowning out all the subtleties. I can tell by close listening how good your articulation, fingering and tone are, so don‘t hide it!

This really is the GOATed flute tone. Especially in the upper register it's as bright and clear and complex as the best boehm flute tone, but with just a bit more depth to it, and more variety too. Like before you even consider the expressiveness given from the free pitch variation from the open holes, I genuinely think this is the best jazz flute tone I've heard. This is such an achievement honestly, it just sounds GREAT.

this really is insane... Wouldn't you have to half hole almost everything?? And that that speed? I don't play shakuhachi but from what I know from playing other similar open holed flutes without lots of viable cross-fingerings, I genuinely wouldn't have thought this was actually humanly possible... Mad!!! I'm incredibly impressed and slightly intimidated 😂
@zingerzmusic
@zingerzmusic 3 ай бұрын
Haha yeah it was a lot of half-holing... But unlike the side blown flutes you can adjust your head/lip angle to manipulate the pitch, so that gives you a lot more options than just half holes. A bit of a puzzle to figure out, but that's part of what makes the shakuhachi such a deep and interesting instrument to explore!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Finally, a tutorial that actually explains how to form a correct embouchure. I tried your method and started getting clean tone almost immediately. I now have hope for the future of my Shakuhachi journey. I was getting very frustrated. Again, thank you.
