Awesome setup Nick. Thanks for sharing the setup & night out. One thing I always do with canvas swag (any canvas that needs waterproofing) is hang it up and give it a good soaking and let it dry naturally. Tightens fibres up and job done. I’ve never had to add an agent to the canvas and this process has kept my canvas swag 100% waterproof now for about 30 years. Hope this helps mate and save a bit of coin too. You’re halfway there with the process with all that rain. 👍🏼 Keep up the great work Nick. The little fella is gunna love it. My young bloke still raves about his first experience & that was a test run in the back yard under a hoochie in winter. 🤝👍🦘

Exactly the advice I was going to give. If you fabsil it, it’s not going to breathe as well either. Just thoroughly wet, slowly dry, then repeat again and again, allowing the fibres to naturally swell and bed in together.😁

Great observation between, TV and the first time camping out. It's odd how the smell of a tent or shelter and the sound of the weather outside bring back great memories. When treating/ waterproofing canvas, it's been my experience that you get it soaking wet...add nickwax or other product and then let it dry naturally. The fibers tighten and hold all of the proofing within. Good job, thanks for sharing. 👍🇬🇧

I have two East German Army Zeltbahns, exactly the same design except in the rain drop camo pattern. The buttons are an absolute pain in the fingers to do up and undo so that big zipper looks like a great mod. Heavy but so durable and practical. Great vid as always. I have a 4 year old son who just had his first camping trip; slept in the back of the car with mum while my girls either hammocked or tented in our French Army F1 desert tent. I like the retro, old school thing, too.

Nicely done. I was looking forward to this from last week, then forgot about it. Seeing it pop up as a video now was great. I like how you stuck to the mission of showing the tent, brief recap of the skirt height, what to do if missing a peg, and detailing the post rain results. No faffing about with a lot of unrelated B roll. Depending on the video, that's part of the overall experience, but some YT bushcrafters waste so much time doing that when you just want them to get to the point. You got to the point. 👍

your best off upgrading the pegs ... wire ones are not that good, Some people 'weather' their lavvu's by leaving them outside for several days/week to be rained on, and dry a few times .. am told it increases the waterproof efficiency. In the past i have saturated mine in fabsil which made it totally waterproof.

I must have missed something, in the intro you said you were gonna treat the lavvuu for leaks, from last nights experience, so that must have been a different camp out, I take it, and you are now using a treated lavvuu? Because no leaks, I guessed.??
@billlyell83222 жыл бұрын
Hi great video. I have one criticism, your improper roll of the lavvu. Did the modifications you did prevent you rolling it up properly into it's smaller size? I'm asking because I have yet to modify mine in any way that can't be returned to original condition. My changes only entail making a bug net fly for summer. And using telescopic tarp poles that double as trekking poles. I also replaced the tent pegs with better modern versions more suited for my terrain.

Omg I borrowed one of those tents, from my stock ( many years ago in 19 forgotten I had an army surplus stall) I packed it on the bike and rode of for the weekend, had to ride through a foot or two of salt water to reach the camp site,, no time to wait for the tide, with wet boots I pitched and made camp, O boy did it rain that night, And that polish canvas tent leaked like a hair nett, never again would I use an old canvas tent , haha 😂 I put it back into stock and it was soon sold, by someone with more enthusiasm for such things, hehe I admit my mistake now.

Then eat more fatty foods. People for some reason think they will be warm eating the same bird food as they would in a warm heated house? You need the extra calories to stay warm. Don't worry your 12 mile walk home with a heavy pack will burn off the excess.

Two comments. 1. Best to "whizz" around the lavvu the night before if you're trying to ward off predators. 2. Maybe make two extra pegs. If one should break and if one should also be left behind. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 In all seriousness, thank you for sharing your experience. 👍👍

You can also cut a new bar of Dial anti bacterial soap in half, with your pocket knife awl make a hole in the bar of soap. Hang on a bush or tree, put them out 20 yards in the outer perimeter of your camp. Any predators circling your camp will catch the scent.

dont use any chemicals on your canvas once it starts to wear off it will wear off unevenly, it needs to be soaked and left to air dry, that binds the fibres chemicals only mask it and affects the canvas's breathability

Cześć. To dobry film, ale... Some explanation. "Polish lavvu" isn't correct name of this tent. Name "lavvu" is from the Sami (Laponian) language and means a Sami tent, kind of lower tipi. In Polish we don't have and use this word: lavvu.. and when U are using it, it's a mistake and funny. No Pole or Slav call it "lavvu". It's like calling the Indian teepee or Lapland lavvu using the name: plash palatka... or more correctly the pwashch pawatka (Polish: płaszcz pałatka). I know that the name "Polish lavvu" has become popular and that this tent exists in the world under this name but ... I will describe briefly the situation that took place in the Polish Military Property Agency where such a tent could be purchased: when, out of curiosity whether he would associate this name, I used the words: Polish lavvu, the seller - soldier - did not know what it was about. He immediately knew the word "pałatka" (your "palatka"). Our army does not use this name "LAVVU" either ;-) Your "plash palatka" is an incorrect attempt to English transliterate the Polish name of this coat-tent. It should be "pwashch" or - making things a bit easier - "plashch" (Polish "płaszcz"), which means coat. Palatka (Polish "pałatka"), means tent and should also be written and pronounced slightly differently, because the closest equivalent of the letter "ł" is the English "w". The completely correct English pronunciation/transliteration of these words would be: p-w-a-s-h-c-h p-a-w-a-t-k-a (w as in "walk", sh as in "show", ch as in "cherry", ). Use a translator with pronunciation to check the pronunciation of these words: PŁASZCZ PAŁATKA in Polish and you'll understand what's going on. Płaszcz pałatka means coat-ten, a tent made of a mantle/coat, two in one. We call it short pałatka. Additionally, if you said "plash" (or plash palatka) to a Polish who doesn't watch English-language bushcraft movies, he or she wouldn't know what it meant, because the word means nothing. He would definitely associate the word plashch, especially if you pronounced it as pwashch ;-)
