That Purple shit looked like it just went from bubbles to nothing. There is no way on this world i would lay an RSJ on wood supports to the ground. You need bricks for that and a foundation. That thing weighs more than that whole bottom floor. ????

I have been a contractor for 25 years. I have revisited lots of my work. All the different systems are installing windows are complete overkill. I certainly don’t understand the obsession with sloped sills. If that is necessary, then your window install failed. The window install shouldn’t fail unless you’re doing a lousy job.
@w.k.d.constructionllc
@w.k.d.constructionllc 15 сағат бұрын
I’m not worried about my installation, it’s flawless. I’m simply applying cost effective insurance in case of a window failure. Single windows aren’t a huge risk, but once you get a 2/3/4 wide window unit…you should know there is greater risk for water infiltration. If it’s overkill, so what. I’m ready if something unforeseen happens

I can’t see why you’d use liquid flash for this application. Taping is much faster. I do like it for the nail holes and any weird places you can’t do with the flashing tape or stretch tape.

I like the liquid flash better, it is way more durable and does a better job, IMO. Plus, I’m not in it for whatever is fastest. I’m in it for the best possible outcome. Zip stretch Tape is a great option as well

Question…. And not to knock your skill because… damn… Why not get a rabbet trim piece where you can slide the Hardi behind the lip? I know curved and well under 18” overhang and no need for drip lip…. I get it… but with expansion and contraction you risk buckling or gapping over time. With a rabbet covering the cuts, better - or???
@w.k.d.constructionllc
@w.k.d.constructionllc Күн бұрын
Rabbet probably wouldn’t be ideal in this situation. In theory it sounds good but IMO the rabbet with the lap siding wouldn’t look clean and would be difficult to caulk the edges. With These short pcs it’s going to have very minimal movement anyhow. This is over 2 years old now and still looks fantastic.
@csabaknezy208
@csabaknezy208 Күн бұрын
@@w.k.d.constructionllc understand, and…. When I put my hardi up. I did use the rabbet style and slid the pieces in under which had a 1/2” cover over the ends. I didn’t have to caulk since the opportunity for rain to get in between the trim and the edges would mean rain was coming in at the edge. Again loving the attention to detail and thanks for sharing your expertise!!!

Those column based need to be set on 3/4” non shrink grout. The base to concrete connection as shown won’t transfer loads through the weld evenly due to irregular contact.
@w.k.d.constructionllc
@w.k.d.constructionllc 2 күн бұрын
I’m not looking for vertical load since it’s not meant for that, I’m worried about lateral tension more than anything. It’s to stiffen the gable from wind shear
@anadromous9200
@anadromous9200 2 күн бұрын
@@w.k.d.constructionllc Hi there. That’s exactly what I’m referring to. Try searching “steel moment frame column base connection”, and you’ll find technical explanations and details of this very important topic. The steel moment frame is a very useful thing to create the large openings we want, but to function as intended, certain criteria must be met. Shape and wall thickness of the frame, weld connections, and how the bases are connected to your foundation all work together to create the safety and functionality you’re intending to give your client.
@thomas3139
@thomas3139 Күн бұрын
I tried looking up the video you talked about, but how does using 3/4" of grout differ from attaching it to concrete like he did?
@anadromous9200
@anadromous9200 Күн бұрын
@@thomas3139 Hi Thomas. The grout space, which I’ve seen at thicknesses of up to two inches on larger moment frames, provides perfectly even contact between the foundation and the entirety of the base plate. All of the loads transmitted into the concrete are distributed throughout the weld connection between post and base. If the base plate is set with uneven contact between plate and concrete, the tension and compression forces through the weld will be uneven as well, and it’s that weld that is the concern. The best way to set these moment frames is to embed the bottom of the columns in the concrete, thereby eliminating the weld at the bottom plate from the loads. Hope this makes sense. Setting these bases on non shrink grout gives an installation advantage as well. The bases are held up in the air the required distance by setting nuts on the bolts prior to placing the frame. This allows one to dial in the the frame for plumb by adjusting the four nuts up or down. Non shrink grout is then packed into the cavity to finish the install. Edit: after further reading, I discover that the primary reason for the grout connection is the point load of the column into the base plate, and the need to evenly distribute the load into the plate from the vertical loads. The bottom plate can in fact bend from these loads, which I assume would work to break the weld joints. There is a lot of engineering going on in designed moment frames regarding the bottom plate to column connection and the design system assumes even contact between plate and concrete.
