Out of curiosity, do you have coach relationships on? And if so, what does that look like between the coaches themselves and then the player-coach relationships. I've found that good relationships matter as much as their coaching ability

I think the hitting coach has to go, the whole team can't hit. I think Endo is great value. The numbers are extreme but his production is good, 70+ RBIs on a team with the worst batting average. I think if the lineup bats better you'd easily see that number rise to 90 or 100. I don't think he's the answer long term but the best for that price of 3 million

A random thought caused by your remarks after 1st September: How is the manager handling the platoon substitutions when the opposition changes pitchers? I'd hope that he'd substitute like for like in terms of defensive position. However, if he isn't, it could explain your bad record in one run games. I don't know enough about the team settings and strategy pages to know if this is adjustable at all. I would like to see the rest of your players before I come to a conclusion on Endo. On the one hand, terrible batting average. On the positive side, if we ignore (most of) the stats, you paid 3 million for league average offence with a premium glove - it's now 70 rated for 2nd base. That's probably not the biggest problem with your lineup. If you need more offence, it's might be easier to find it at 3rd rather than 2nd, so you have the option to move him over to 2B.

Well they say every point of WAR is worth 3 million, so despite hitting .188 and striking out 260 times he returned plus value, although just barely. I think if he was an elite defender at SS he would probably be plus value for several years and worth a multi year deal if you could lock him up around 3-4 million per. that being said, if you can bring him back for one year at 3 million or less, I would do it because you don't have any other good options at this point. I can't remember for sure how it works when an international guy is signed, but his contract may auto-renew at 3 million for the next two years before hitting arbitration if you don't cut him loose. I think it's worth shopping him around too, although I'm sure you've been doing that without much success as otherwise you probably would've said more about it.

I have heard that rule of thumb, but if we're ever going to be successful with the A's I'm going to need to do better than that! If a replacement level team is about 50 wins, and we have a payroll of around $60 million, getting fair value out of everyone is only going to get us to around 70 wins total! So I need to find some real valuable, cheap guys... and hopefully also get a boost in payroll someday! He is set to auto-renew at $3 million next season, but then looks like he has four potential arbitration eligible years after that. So I have control of him through his mid 30's if I want. If someone blew me away with an offer I would definitely consider it, but not expecting that will happen!

One trick that I used with the A:s is to trade for a top player at the start of his FA year or at the deadline if he had two seasons remaining. I would get the other team to retain as much as possible and let him play out his contract. This satisfied the owner goals of bringing in a top player and gave me a supplemental pick the following year.

It's mainly just player attributes from my perspective, although I'm sure there are more scientific ways to choose! For a Stopper I typically want a great bullpen arm with decent stamina, who is also preferably Durable or maybe even an Iron Man physically. If I'm going to give a guy in the bullpen twice the work of most other relievers, I want him to be better than the guys I'm using less, but I also want him to survive in that role where he could be pitching 70-80+ games and 120-140+ innings!

Banfield and Leonard both have very low BABIPs at the July 1st review: .167 and .214. I expect them to be less worse in the remainder of the season. Giddens caught my attention, except he doesn't really have a position. The top 3 pitchers looked good as well: Genus, Patterson & Pennyman. There's no great stars in the draft: Giddens isn't Seifu, for example, but one general theme from the draft is that many players look reasonably developed. There seems to be lots of high schoolers with ratings in the 30s, rather than the 20 contact / 20 control guys such as Kruz Schoolcraft. Or, maybe I'm just paying more attention to the current ratings rather than the potentials.
