Ian, Yet another quick question (on a 3 year old video, if you are kind enough to address this)... @20:46 the second demon unit (red) is using their initiative to charge the marauders. The first of the red stands appears to pass through a portion of the golden demons in order to get into center-to-center contact with the marauders. I don't think that would be legal, as the rules (pg 36) state: "...This stand must be able to see the enemy and must have a clear path to the target." I question whether there is clear path to the target in this situation, as you cannot move through friendly units in the game, besides a special situation like a Burst Through, and even then, the unit being moved though must be unengaged in combat (which includes supporting units). Are you really allowed to slip laterally a centimeter in order to line up with the target stand center unit as shown? That is, the term "Clear Path", does not have to be a direct path AND you can slip laterally to line up, even when you are touching the enemy? In this example, you would be in contact with both the golden demons AND the marauders, before the lateral movement is made.
@iainmstanding
@iainmstanding Күн бұрын
Of course! A clear path does not have to be a straight line, nor the shortest route, when charging. So the charging stand can pivot around the golden demons. When the first charging stand makes contact to the nearest enemy stand, it must form up in front edge to edge contact. There is no rule to state that the first charging stand halts at the point first contact is made. So in this case, the first charging stand is compelled to form up against the central enemy stand by sliding in to place across the front of the enemy unit. It will not interesect any other stands when doing so. Remaining stands then form a battle line but cannot move through the first charging stand.

@@iainmstanding Thanks for that interpretation. We will play it that way. I would note, however, that this seems like a logical inconsistency with the example @24:50. Just because the golden demons in that example cannot see or contact the rear of the marauders (understanding that they are in their rear zone which is blocked by impassable terrain), it would seem consistent with the above interpretation (where you can slide around to make contact), that this charge couldn't be made with a single order, hitting the Marauder's flank. I guess I will have to take that one up with the Rules Committee! 🤷‍♀

@@shawnzeppo4361 indeed, the charge zones rule can create illogical situations. However it's intent is to prevent crazy charges where you move past the target unit and then charge a flank.

3:47 the wording of this rule is confusing to me. Left column establishes half pace movement on a failed command roll, but doesn't say it only counts for the first command directed at a troop each round. Then in the right column a restriction is made, but not referencing which movement this applies to. I thought, this rule means that if a second or third command fails, you have to undo *all* movement that troop already made that command phase. Only now with your explanation I get what it means. Just make clear that half pace is only allowed for the first failed command per troop per command phase in the left column and ditch the sentence in the right column. Way less confusing.

@klauszoidberg999
@klauszoidberg999 55 минут бұрын
@@petrhovado5590 I played Warmaster a couple of times, but I always found Hail Caesar similar but much more refined and modern. Its not nearly as complex as warmaster. One of the reasons wm was not successful was IMO the convoluted overcomplex (for this type of "warhammer style" games) combat system. Hail Caesars is simpler, faster and more fun while still offering the 2 elements which I like in WM - the simple unit statline and the order system. WMR is not much different than the original, maybe its a little bit better and has learned from the shortcomings of the original, but its still not good enough for me. The devs didnt dare to tackle the bigger issues of old WM, IMO. And speaking of good game systems in this style. There is fantastic new game rule from the Perries and Jervis Johnson I think. Valor and Fortitude is its name. Currently there are only Napoleonics and ACW but in future there will be medieval rules too. V&F is again much better than Hail Caesar so I will switch completely with my warmaster collection to this masterpiece when the medieval rules are released.

Great army list. Would have been good for Albion to have had a beserk option as well. The fanatic type, berserker troops were actually a pretty common troop type in Western Europe from antiquity to the Dark Ages. Albions lads would have much the same stats, but less armour. One idea might simply be to pay points for ogres and use beserk models.

Quick question right off the bat... Since Orcs have infravision (they can see in the IR spectrum) and love the darkness, why would they care about reaching the opposite end of the pass by nightfall? Come to think of it, why not just attack at night when they would have a huge advantage over the humans, if not the Dwarves?

Fantastic. I enjoy warmaster and it's coming from the pre dei era. Moreover, I disliked the direction gw took with their later minis and I dislike the woodelves look in the total war series. War dancers, in their earlier incarnation had a really cool ancient British Celtic warrior look. One or two female models were there, but they were a nice option and looked as feral as the guys. Nowadays, they're entirely female, with impractical looking flowing robes and look nothing like they used too. Hence, the old Gaelic look, has gone. Indeed, it's a problem with the look of all modern woodelves today. It's just a bunch of boring folks in green.

Thanks again for the excellent videos. Reading the rulebook and going through your videos are a great way to pick up the game quicky, but your videos may not have been updated to reflect current rules changes. In the current version of the rules versus your example @16:16 instead of being confused and not moving, the blocked retreating stands would just be eliminated if they were forced to retreat into the enemy, this is also true if they would if they were forced to retreat over their own units who were engaged in combat (ref Blocked Retreats, pg 46). I think I like this interpretation better, as just getting confused really doesn't make sense when forced to retreat into an enemy or even in front of a friendly shield wall engaged in another combat, I think the unit would be doomed.
@iainmstanding
@iainmstanding Ай бұрын
@@shawnzeppo4361 In this example the unit is not retreating, as it did not lose combat. Instead it is falling back from a drawn combat. See page 51 of the rulebook.

Thanks for the excellent videos and answering all the questions in the discussion below. Given the importance of shooting, and of getting enough hits on a single unit to remove a stand, do you require that all shots be called in advance, before any results are rolled? Understand this is only important when you have 2 or more potential targets that are equidistant from the closest portion of the firing unit, as you are always required to shoot at the closest target... Also, what minimum distance do you consider to be close enough to be considered equidistant, within a centimeter?
@iainmstanding
@iainmstanding Ай бұрын
@@shawnzeppo4361 thanks for watching! I generally use millimetres to decide which target is closer, so if one target is 10.4 cm (104 mm) away and another is 10.6 cm (106mm), you have to target the first. If there is still a choice of targets, then declare the target at the point you make the shooting attack. So for example, you have a unit of cannon that must target an enemy unit of knights, and a unit of crossbows that may target the same enemy unit of knights. The cannon go first and cause 2 hits. The crossbows can now choose to add their fire to the same target to try and remove a stand.
