I was a RAF brat at RAF Larrbruch from 1983 to 1986. I saw Bucaneers, Jaguars, Phantoms and Tornados everyday. I loved it.

I spent a week at RAF Laarbruch in 1975 as an air cadet. We flew from somewhere in the UK to RAF Brüggen and were then taken by bus to Laarbruch. They had nuclear weapons for the bucaneers (I think) that were stationed there. Now it's a Ryanair operating base, Weeze Airport, aka Düsseldorf Airport in Ryanair parlance (although it's 57km away). Ryanair also operates from Hahn Airport, formerly used by the USAF as a frontline base. In fact, Ryanair has kept several old military airbases alive in Germany (also in Memmingen).

I found a RAF published book called Flugplatz Gütersloh 1937 - 1987 : A Short History, and written by Gerry Lewis, in my local charity shop. Interesting read about a RAF base in the former West Germany and the later chapters refer to similar situations as does this video.

I grew up next to a UK airfield located in Germany. We never heard or complaint about noise pollution. We appreciated the NATO presence in those days. Respect to all service men then and now.

When there was an air force! The days before thatcher destroyed the defence industry and aviation in the UK!

And manufacturing and sold off Water, Power, Rail and Telecommunications.. The only reason we held onto the Falklands was because some of the asset stripping of the RN didn't get through in time.
