After you selected your 11 second exposure, with the dial under your right hand, you selected in the "red" part of the dial, a delay. Then when you fired the shutter, the delay worked fine, but since the exposure was still set for 11 seconds, I counted the time, and instead of approximately 11 seconds it was closer to 6 seconds. Perhaps the delay works much better when the exposure is within the settings of the dial by the left hand. So, when is it better to select B (bulb) instead of T (time)? By the way, as you have shown, cranking the dial under your right hand is more work. It appears you are tightening a spring mechanism. Then it makes more sense for the dial to be under the right hand for the strength of the right hand....if you're right handed. I have one, and it indeed needs a strong grip and some finger muscle to turn it.

Very interesting tip. Did you subsquently develop some film at the estimated time/temp and confirm that this technique provides the result you expect?

@krisb8781 27 күн бұрын
@@GrahamNorth-g8h yes sir. It works. But like with anything else there is about 10% margin of error. For black and white it's barely noticeable.

In a comment here I saw that you bought the START 66 from my home country, Bulgaria. By the way this camera apears in the beggining of the 2024 Bulgarian biographical film "Гунди - легенда за любовта" (Gundi - legenda za lyubovta or Gundi - a legend about love). This film is dedicated to the Bulgarian football player Georgi Asparuhov, who played for Levski Sofia. Gundi was his nickname. In the beggining of this film one of Gundi's friends shoots on a START 66, but you have to take into consideration that the scene takes place in 1959. The START 66 was made in the late 60s, which makes it unapropriate for the period. Many will not bat an eye for such a thing, but for me it drives me nuts to see the usage of wrong props in movies.

What is the focal range of this camera? How close can you get to a subject before losing focus?
@krisb8781

@@carlweingartenmultiphasere9648 Hi. These cameras were designed to take photos at relatively sharp focus. Anything from roughly 5ft to infinity will be sharp. Focal length is about 5 inches.

I have a pair if 1a's (circa 1961) which I got from my dad. Basically the same camera aside from a few cosmetic changes. Which was the problem... All of the subsequent cameras were based on the the original 1936 design, which was highly advanced for the day. By the late 50's and early 60's the Japanese modernized these designs and put most of the German camera makers out of business. Today, Exakta's are photographic dinosaurs, but a hell of a lot of fun to use if you know your way around completely manual cameras. Can't say I'd pick this as my first camera, but if you are an experienced photographer, these are a blast to use and you can get a decent kit on E-Bay relatively cheaply.

I recently got a Rolleiflex Automat X k4 1950. One thing you forgot to mention is that you can set the shutter speeds from B to 1/125 before or after cocking the shutter, but 1/500 can only be selected before cocking the shutter.😊

Thanks. My cousin was an antique dealer. After he died his wife asked me to sell a bunch of things. This is one of the many cameras and camera accessories i have to go through. Ive seen a few other vids of this camera, but those aren't the striped ones. Now i know its the arc deco model. Thanks for that. But i dont think the shutter works. Its my understanding that if you flip the lever the shutter opens for a split second and you can see through it, but i cant see through this one. Does that mean the shutter doesn't work and is there any way it can be repaired by less than a novice? I see 4 small scews on the front, i am very tempted to go in, should i do it?

Thanks for recommending Mark Hansen. I sent one of my two Rolleiflexes to CA and was told that it's no repairable due to "liquid damage." I'm not doubting that, but I'm going to contact Mark about my second Relleiflex. Both of them were made in the early 50's and share the bayonet mount and view finder.
