It's possible that we might do a few more here and there. We did finish the main story and the episodes are up without edits. I need to finish editing editing them (I just take out the Twitch breaks mostly). I'm glad you enjoy it. We do have some new games in the works also, now that I'm done with class. I'm also working on expanding the channel to other genres.

Hey! Jim Johnson! Breaking news. Guy from "How to be a Great GM" is having his channel pruned. He is restarting again with a new channel all about Star Trek Adventures ed 2. instead of a another D&D channel. He would be an amazing guest for you and Michael Dismuke. I think you should check out some of his videos. And I'm still holding out for the snowballs chance in hell that you'll one day have Razorfist and Terran from the Rageaholic channel to discuss story writing and the deeper facets of the lore of Deep Space 9 on your channel. Have a great new year as we excitedly look to your content for 2025.

Razorfist did a deep dive on a ton of episodes of DS9 and also pointed out that the script writers were reusing scripts from the Rifleman, Clumbo, and a dozen other shows. It is what led to the charm and novelty of each episode, "this is the noir one, or the rom com one, or the old western showdown one." The writers reskinned what worked, added some flair to make it their own, and in most cases, it worked.

I know it wasn't, but I feel like this conversation was about me. Now, I'm questioning some of my choices and wondering how to fix what may be a tarnished reputation. I'm going to start by writing just to write again to restrengthen those muscles which I have allowed to atrophy and try to put a portfolio and website together. Jim and Michael, if you have anything you would like to see in that portfolio, just let me know and I will see what I can come up with.
@MichaelDismukeGMАй бұрын
Just write what inspires you.
@scottmmacekАй бұрын
@@MichaelDismukeGM - That's been what I've been having trouble with. I get inspired, but that only carries me so far. I have difficulty following through these days. In my younger days, I would start typing and write myself out of all the obvious solutions and let the characters come up with the less obvious solutions. When running a TTRPG, I start with a premise and see what happens when my players push against the premise and the story emerges. It makes writing an adventure and sometimes even a Mission Brief more difficult because I feel like I am leaving plot holes because I forget things if I'm not able to adjust course as the story comes out.

@interstellardaveАй бұрын
Good conversation! IMO, people complaining about literally everything in our society being “problematic” in some way are, themselves, a problem. Can’t we all be individuals anymore, and make our own value judgments for our lives, and maybe leave everyone else alone? Sure there’s rare occasions where something is hugely offensive to a really large group of people but even that can be taken care of by the normal response of the marketplace. Most of us don’t need to be, and shouldn’t try to be, activists and censors, seeking to change everything to meet our desires-or what we perceive to be what’s “best” for everyone else. Anyone taking on that responsibility is guaranteed to be wrong, because they’re circumventing freedom of expression, and consumer choice.

@ I finally did. But I can’t argue with the fact that Troi can still sense the emotion of someone 1,000’s of miles away just because they’re on a view screen. My rule is if it was on screen, it can be done.

@ on that topic, I’ve changed conceal carry rules. By the rules you can conceal a Type 1 phaser but not Type 2. Well we’ve seen them on screen conceal Type 2 phasers, so I allow it. Just not as concealable as the Type 1.

Off topic, but I’m hoping to get the ear of those involved in game content, as you guys are. Please tell me that a creatures supplement is in the works? Virtually every RPG of any longevity has one, or more, such supplements, and STA desperately needs one, IMO. We could have way more creatures than are in the 2e book (along with those hopefully), with more detailed descriptions and artwork. It’s a no-brainer, one would think, but it seems no-one’s thought to make one yet?

I love how traits are used in this game. If players embrace the concept it keeps fresh in their minds that it’s something they can use, as well as something to be aware of. “Smoke”, for instance, can be expressed as “The bridge is full of smoke, obscuring your view of the scene”. But you can make the “smoke” trait yourself, if your character has the tools or ingredients to do so. You can make a clear room smoke-filled to conceal your movement, make enemies unable to target you, etc. You can do such things in any RPG, of course, but this one emphasizes it a lot more. I’ve played in and DM’d far too many D&D sessions where players never do anything other than move and attack over and over until they win, or lose. No thought is given towards utilizing the environment or changing the environment to gain advantage, or to extricate themselves from the situation, etc. That mindless mechanical progression through encounters is so boring.

thank you Alex for talking about all this, tips for just making a good game are even more critical when you move online. I am so glad that Alex says it is OK to go more simple for a VTT that is great for people to hear and not worry about as new GM's. ( We just use google slides just because i am used to it. it really makes the "sticky notes" part really good!) Keeping the camera moving is really REALLY important for me. Sadly I have seen 2/3 of a table sidelined for an hour while 2 players have a "moment". Remember good customers are like Latinum - treasure them.
@twitchew2 ай бұрын
great to hear about use of online tools and GM on a platform. (also, oh man, have a business plan for tax and things, that kills creatives so quickly sometimes. ) and one thing that may not have been mentioned for "getting started" - a stable internet connection, having a player drop repeatedly during a session is frustrating for everyone. you can switch to a new scene with whoever is there, but it really rough when it happens repeatedly.
