I taught myself Spanish and German. The BEST method I have for learning a language is to speak it. You learn SO MUCH MORE by speaking with native speakers. If you cannot do that, look up mock conversations or practice with Siri or bixbi or whatever you have. The conversation won’t be perfect, but it’s something. We learn better by listening and doing. Input, output. Good luck guys!

Thank you for making the video, but it is probably obsolete now that Anki's UI has changed substantially. I'll need to look for a more up-to-date one.

I’m so confused how you learned one book in 3 weeks? Even with 4 hours a day. It took me 3 months to finish one book and actually learn what’s in it. You must have a crazy good memory 😱.

The 1st time I watched this video was a couple years ago and I had no problem following the steps and installing tampermonkey, wanikani open framework and double-click on a Windows 10 PC. But now (2 yrs later in 2024) I'm trying to install it on a Windows 11 laptop and I'm getting errors. Also, what has happened to this video -- it didn't use to be so blurry. Anyway, can anyone help me with this? The error I'm getting is Script: C:\Users\djoli\Downloads\Wanikani Open Framework.user.js Line: 22 Char: 2 Error: Syntax error Code: 800A03EA Source: Microsoft JScript compilation error

At the beginning she mentioned using an Anki deck plugin that pretypes the words in so she can just review them that way. Becasue there were over 900 reviews she said that would be faster instead of having to type them all! :)

Very helpful, Alivia! I will give them a go. I'm 77 y o male in Texas and have been "learning" Japanese for 40 years. Lately, I have listened to Yoshie, a Japanese lady living in Paraguay. Also to Miru, who is a little ol' lady who has interesting topics about Japan (not the walk-around random lesson, but usually a topic like honne vs tatemae.) Yuka has a new series where she takes a snippet of live conversation with a store salesperson or a cafe hostess in unscripted conversations. These conversations have the advantage of using polite words, shortened words, filler words, and technical words all in one salad, and then she analyzes every little ne? to show what it means. All in Japanese, although she also speaks very fluent Chinese on some videos. Thanks for the new sources. I agree with your opinion about youtube being the best resource. I love kanji and it is also improving as I listen to. It also helps to anchor new vocabulary if I have a visual that is familiar. KZbin helps tons. I love your enthusiasm and helpfulness. Keep it coming!

Slow down. Who cares how quickly and superficially someone else can do something ? SRS takes time to burn an entry into your memory. Have a life and do other things while SRS works its magic. Expect Genki 1 to take 3-4 months. Genki 2 may take 5-6 months. If you do it all in a year, that's great; Think of how much you will have learned ! You will probably also be doing WaniKani (at a setting of about 5 words per day) to learn the Kanji at the same time. If you try to go faster than that, the reviews will build up and crush you. You won't have any time left to learn the grammar with Genki. You will start to dread learning Japanese and that's not good. A karate teacher put an empty glass on an outdoor table and asked me to fill it. I used a pitcher of water and slowly filled the glass. I didn't spill a drop, but I left room so the glass could be raised without spilling. Then, the teacher demonstrated what happens when you try to fill the glass with a fire hose. The glass shattered when it hit the wall 20 feet away. In the end, there was no water in the glass. You are the glass... choose your approach wisely. How many of you are in such a hurry, you are attempting the fire hose approach to learning Japanese? The mascot of WaniKani is a tortoise. Can you guess why ? Yes, grasshopper... The tortoise beats the hare in the end. (Every freakin' time.) If you keep crawling along, eventually you will get there and there probably won't be any rabbits at the finish line. It takes years to learn something as complex as Japanese. Set a reasonable pace and celebrate your progress as you go. In a year, you will be miles ahead of the speedsters who got behind on reviews, got depressed, and had their motivation totally destroyed. They will all be out failing at some new project as you move toward your goal with discipline and calmness. Slow down and you will get there. People who brag about doing it quickly are usually full of 5hit. They often are the ones who had many false starts and finally made it 20 years after they first began. When they say they did it in a year, they leave out the part where they started over a decade ago and restated last year. It's kind of like the pregnant women who have their baby and then report a miraculous 50 pound weight loss in a few months to sell their new diet plan.
